Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

Even more important? He's doing it in a Championship Series preview against the junior MFY. Every scout says his command still is a year away from being ML ready but K Law and J Callis both have him as a #2 starter.

The bottom line is that the Orioles need a bunch of starting pitchers. They have ONE you can count on next year, Guthrie. They need to pick up a couple of veterans to fill out the rotation. Then a couple of young pitchers can try to compete for the other 2 spots.
Thinking that the Orioles can find 4 half decent SP from their minor leagues is crazy. Look at this year and all of the failures we have seen due to poor performance or injuries. Basically they proved they have no one other than Guthrie who can start and maintain an ERA under 5.00 which is pathetic.
I'm suggesting going for starts but they need quality innings from a couple of veterans. If, by some miracle, they ever end up with too much pitching it can ALWAYS be traded.
While the Orioles are performing above my expectations I don't think their young players have developed much. Who among the young pitchers showed much? Johnson and ????? At least Wieters looks like the real deal and Jones showed some talent. Unfortunately 1B and SS are gaping holes.

looks like the Orioles are going to finish about 10-15 games under .500 for the year. Just no starting pitching.

I was at the Baysox game last night, and Tillman was great, but Nolan Riemold really impressed me. He crushed two homers - the first the opposite way and the second one way over the second wall and into the trees.
Chris Ray looked pretty good. Greg Aquino, on the other hand, not so much. Fans were yelling for him to go back to Baltimore. But he escaped a second-and-third jam without allowing a run.
I was also glad to know that at least the future O's will be able to beat up on the future Yankees. The Baysox were cruising 10-0 until the ninth inning when the Thunder scored five runs.
