Saturday sports overload
Trying to keep up with three games at the same time. The Orioles are trying to score in double figures to give themselves a decent chance to win with their seemingly helpless pitching staff. It's almost gotten to the point where the Ravens have as good a chance to win scoring 13 as the O's.
Meanwhile, the Terps just finished grinding out an unspectacular victory over the post-Flacco Delaware Blue Hens on ESPN, and my USC Trojans are busy crushing Virginia on national television ABC. I've been switching around so much I'm starting to worry about carpel tunnel syndrome. I'm proud that Southern Cal played a real opponent on the road while top-ranked Georgia took on Georgia Southern and Ohio State played Youngstown State.
Georgia was ranked first in both major polls. USC and Ohio State flip-flop in the next two places. That'll be settled when my favorite team mugs Stan White's favorite team in LA on Sept. 13.

Who would have thought the Orioles would turn into the Texas Rangers this year?

Peter,
Aubrey Huff hit another one out today, and is probably one of the five or six best hitters in the league this year. Have the Orioles tried to trade him? Couldn't he get a big return after the year he is having?

Pete's reply: I guess we'll find out tomorrow. I'll weigh in a little more on this subject in the morning.

Hey Pete,
You call Virginia a real opponent? I've heard more than one report that they might be one of Duke's three victories this year. Granted, it's not Youngstown State or Georgia Southern. The real cojones belong to Alabama and Clemson, for staking their seasons on a tough opening week out-of-conference matchup.

Continuing my point from yesterday about the folly of trading Bradford if the Os will get nothing useful in return--this was one more game where 1.2 shutout innings from Chad instead of the parade of run-per-inning losers would have made the Orioles winners today against the Rays.

Hey peter - do you any idea what the FO is thinking about with markakis and his contract. They need to get him signed...he is the best player in either league that nobody knows about. If the O's had any pitching whatsoever he would be a household name right now. They will have some pitching by this time next year and I think they need to move now and get him with one of those 10 year deals flying around. He is in the top 10 in so many categories - his HR's are not, but that often comes later in a career of a guy built like him, and a guy who has a little bit of a long swing.

Pete's reply: I suspect some contract conversations have taken place, but the O's undoubtedly want a bargain if they're going to sign him before they have to and Markakis undoubtedly wants full value, so it'll take awhile.
