Ray's rehab continues (and he's not alone)

chrisray.jpgReliever Chris Ray has been making the rounds during his comeback from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. He pitched a couple of rehab innings in the Gulf Coast League, pitched for the Ironbirds in Aberdeen, stopped in for a visit with his major league teammates at Camden Yards and pitched on Sunday at Delmarva. Today, he's expected to pitch for Double-A Bowie.

I've got to believe he wouldn't be keeping this kind of schedule if the Orioles weren't going to take a look at him in September, though Dave Trembley has been non-committal.

More rehab: While we're on the subject of injured closers, George Sherrill may play catch today for the first time since going on the disabled list. He says he can raise his arm above his shoulder again and is optimistic about a quick recovery from an inflamed shoulder.

Is there a way to stop dave Trembley from over managing....In close games, recently, he consistently pinch-hits Cintron for Castro; Hernandez for Quiroz; and last night Markakis for Montanez (after Montanez just won the suspended game with a single). Is it possible that we might ever see an outfield of Scott, Montanez, and Markakis before the season's end?....Or does Trembley see Payton as the future of the club?

Pete's reply: I think Dave thinks the pitchers need Payton's glove on the field. You'll see move variety after Sept. 1.

Pete's reply: You might, but Montanez is not a center fielder and is not projected as one. Payton is clearly a better CF and Dave has a decimated pitching staff, which makes up-the-middle defense even more important. Even so, you'll see some different lineups in Sept.

They should try Montanez at 1 base. He has a sweet swing, runs well, and certainly had a ton of potential at one time (former 1st round draft pick--see J. Guthrie!!). Anything to keep the kid on the team and swinging the bat.

Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
