No quit
If you needed any further proof that this Orioles team under Dave Trembley is not just another in a series of hopeless Orioles ballclubs, you got it in that four-run ninth inning. Doesn't matter what happened after that. Coming back against KRod, who will set the all-time single-season save record later this season, was an impressive achievement and more proof that Trembley is not blowing smoke when he insists that his team will never quit.
The Orioles could have slipped out of Angels Stadium unnoticed, with plenty of time to head down to the beach for a late dinner along Pacific Coast Highway. They chose to stage their most unlikely comeback of the season to force the game into the bottom of the ninth.
Melvin Mora has been taking some heat here from the fans who want the club to retool with minor league players right now, but he has been one of the best hitters in baseball with runners in scoring position and he showed why again with the huge double that tied a game that appeared to be over long before.
Even if it didn't end well, it was worth staying up past 1 a.m. to see it.

Great comeback - and unfortunately a gutless effort by Sherrill...how can you be afraid to throw strikes to a .230 hitter? That's as disappointing a loss as they have had all year - he's had a wonderful year, but he has crushed a young teams effort enough to know why he wasn't traded at the deadline. To be fair some of this may be due to his innings...but it just seemed he was afraid to throw a strike - brutal! he has not been effective for about 6 weeks - to the point I think it's safe to say we no longer have an "effective" closer - 4.5 era doesn't lie. There's some awful good positives in this game - and in this team...but George isn't part of that anymore in my book. Hopefully he can go back to a setup role next year.

I still say call up Brad Bergeson to replace Sarfate and get Wieters up too while they're at it. I'm sick of seeing our pitchers walk batters, hit batters, and let the number 9 batter do whatever they want to do.
Didn't Trembley teach them Fundementals and how to execute plays? I don't even see any desire to win. It just looks like they just want to get through the season right now.
Didn't they say their goal was to get to .500?
Well, I don't see that happening with the way they're playing right now.

Pete--Right you are; one helluva gritty comeback by the Birds.
Georgie Boy got squeezed on the second pitch to Figgins. That was a nice inside corner fastball. Instead of 1-2, the count goes to 2-1 and then the dreaded walk-off walk.
Tomorrow--make that later tonight--we'll bounce back and win on a Markakis 2-run double. And Melvin will snare a line drive shot over the bag.

No wonder no team wanted Sherrill at the deadline. Dude can't throw strikes.
Who walks in the game-winning run. Good gravy.
That sums up O's baseball under Peter Angelos right there.
Free the Birds Petey.

Yes, agreed. Great comeback. But why does Sherrill keep getting passes for his crappy work? Let's face it, he started the season strong, but since the Pittsburgh series, he has been average or below. I can't understand why all the announcers talk about how "great" he's been all year long despite the fact that he never seems to shut teams down. Oh the excuses....he can't concentrate till there are men on base blah blah blah. Note to George -- WE DON'T NEED THE SUSPENSE. JUST GET THE BATTERS OUT! Think back just a few weeks ago.. the O's had just taken 2 of 3 from the Cubs at Wrigley and were up against the scrub Nationals. In the rubber game of the 3 game set, the O's scored a tie breaker in the top of the 10th only to have George give it all back and then some to Belliard via a 2 run walk off HR. The team has never been the same since then. Look it up.
The fact that we have no one better to close is a sad statement. I say trade George (and send Sarfate with him!).
Yes, it's 130am, the O's just lost, and I'm pissed!

Sarfate is a fine Bullpen arm. Sherrill was in his 2nd inning of work after not pitching in almost a week.
Yeah I am one of those guys that wants Mora out of there. But like many others I thought the O's were trying to compete in 2010 or so. I don't see him as part of the plan.
Insert and Joker related 'It's all part of the plan' comments here.
But I guess some of the minor league guys need to step up. And I am not talking about the ones that have been in the minors 5+ years.

It's 3 a.m. and I can't sleep.. I was thinking earlier, "The Angels really look good," In fact, I can see why it is the best team in baseball. I was intimidated by them a bit. The Orioles didn't seem to be...It was a tough loss, but it really shows that this team does not bow down. You better play all nine innings. Although it was a tough loss, I am pumped.
Let's hope Waters can do something. I don't know much about him.

I think the most positive thing that came out of this was that the comeback was aired live on ESPN's bonus coverage during the Cubs rainout.
The second most positive thing was that the bottom of the ninth was not.
