Never fails

castillo.jpgIt doesn't matter how many major league baseball games you've seen in your life, every game provides an opportunity to see something you've never seen before. The latest, for me, was provided by reliever Alberto Castillo (right) when he hit batters with back-to-back pitches to drive in a run. The two bases-loaded walks that came next were just gravy.

Dave Trembley is getting that "Why me, Lord?" look on his face, and who can blame him? This pitching staff has fallen harder than Hasim Rahman in the second Lennox Lewis fight.

Haven't seen Fernando Cabrera since his little indiscretion on the mound on Friday night. He was fined for flipping the ball at Trembley on his way out of that game, but there was some speculation that he might spend some time in bullpen exile. That wouldn't surprise me, but I'm starting to think the best way to punish the guy might be to make him pitch against the Red Sox.

And he might do well against the red Sox.

At one point does the organization realize that Burres, Castillo, Bierd, Cherry, etc. are not Major League caliber pitchers and try and find guys within the organization that are?

I know this is supposed to be a rebuilding
year and we are lucky to have been near
.500, but this crap is hard to watch. I know the opposition is tougher but this
is disgraceful. Pitchers not covering
first. Waiver claims doing the bulk of
the pitching. Castillo simply stinks.
Why keep running him out there.
Any lefty with control would be better
than Castillo and Walker.

I am a diehard O's fan. Must be to have the energy left to post this.
This annual collapse is difficult to
bear. Give me a reason to keep
watching!

Pete's reply: Jimmy, of course.

Whats the record for consecutive games walking in a run? The O's streak is at three now so I would think they have to at least be getting close.

I have tried to keep up my interest knowing that this is a rebuilding time but the play lately is just about to drive me away. Remember when we stayed up late to see how the Orioles would pull out another one? Then it became staying up to see how they would blow it. Now after a couple of innings you might as well go to bed and rest up for football.

It's called rebuilding for a reason. It's not called staying near .500 while rebuilding. It's not called worrying about wins and losses every day while we're rebuilding.

It's called rebuilding because it takes time to build a solid foundation and that takes time and patience. Get with the program.

What rebuilding program exactly is that Satyr? The 12-15 year rebuilding program?Meanwhike the Marlins have rebuilt twice and won championships in that same time period. And look how much the pitching staff has improved under Rick Kranitz and Stoneface Trembley.Simply amazing.Anybody have an idea when Millah is going to get a meaningful hit again? How about any legitimate hit.A walk even? And why Trembley didn't bunt with 1st and second and Juan (no stick) Castro at the plate is ridiculous.

Understand your frustration, however Satyr 3206 is correct. This team has lacked serious leadership since Pat Gillick. We've been bad this long, because the owner didn't hiore the right people. We did not focus on our farm system for many years, and that has cost us dearly. Anyone on this blog old enough to remember, knows that the great O's teams of the late 60 & through the mid 70's was built through the farm system and shrewd trades.

Don't think so? The farm produced Jim Palmer, Boog Powell, Tommy Phoebus, Bobby Grich, Don Baylor, Don Buford, and Dave McNally. Follow that up with Al Bumbry, Rich Coggins, Doug Decinces, Dennis Martinez & Mike Flanigan.

The Shrewd trades? Well how about Frank Robinson, Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson, Ken Singleton, & Lee May.

My point is that those teams were not built in 1-2 years. We have signed the wrong FA's over the years, and not put any emphasis on our farm system. Andy MacPhail immediately began addressing the farm system after last season was over, and beofre trading Tejada & Bedard.

We all realize this has been a really bad time in O's history these last 11 years, but this franchise is heading in the right direction. Farm system finally is looking healthy, and in the menatime we are going to have to take our beatings until the first wave of the young talent is brought up, and we keep replenishing the system every year. That's how it's done!

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
