My week in review

Getting ready to head over to WBAL (1090 am) to do "The Week in Review'' at noon, so I thought I'd give you my week in review:

Monday -- Ran into Brian Billick at the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society Golf and Tennis Tournament at Eagles Nest. Very excited about his new gig with NFL on FOX. He's getting ready to do some mock games to prepare for the season.

Here's my only problem with Brian: He's better looking than me. He's taller than me. He's smarter than me (though when I challenged him to take the SAT test for pink slips, he declined). He's in much better shape than me (Who isn't?). And he's way, way richer than me. I hate people like that.

Tuesday -- Logistical preparations for debut of The Schmuck Stops Here. Loved writing my own bio. I thought I made myself sound pretty good.

Wednesday -- New blog debuts. I thought the parade and the fireworks show were a little much, but otherwise a pretty good start.

Thursday -- Trade deadline. Like sitting in the maternity ward all day and having the nurse come out and tell you your wife was never pregnant in the first place. Screwed up the Manny deal. Tried to fix it before anybody noticed. Can't get anything past you people.

Friday -- My day to talk politics and try to be funny on the radio. Bruce Elliott still filling in for Clarence Mitchell IV. Loved Bruce in "Diner" and on "The Wire." (Third Season). Love giving him a hard time on WBAL even more.

Mariners tonight. I'll stay up if you do.

Confidential to BB From Balt: My favorite Gilligan's Island episode is the one where the castaways almost get rescued and then Gilligan screws it up.

Stay up for the M's? I'm there, big guy.

Schmuck, I knw you are a huge o's fan, as am I but on a Friday night at 10 and later I expected you to be something more social than just trying to stay up watching the o's game. Whats with that?

Pete, based on some of the alleged figures being tossed around, I don't think it would make sense for the O's to focus on signing Texiera in the off season. I'd rather see us focus on adding some not so pricey starting pitching, and adding a SS prospect. By cutting out Texiera thoughts, I think it allows us to focus on more pressing needs. You think they still explore options with Brewers or Dodgers in off season in order to find a SS?

.............................................................................................
TX, I think they'll look everywhere for a serviceable 2009 shortstop and a guy for the future. Might be too much to ask that it be the same guy. pete

Hey Pete,

Have you seen that episode of Three’s Company where’s there's a misunderstanding with sexual overtones?

pete,

great job on building the blog. i am slowly adjusting after reading roch for so long. heck, i even found myself looking forward to reading it this morning. congratulations. the info, insight, humor, and your patience with difficult/abrasive posters is appreciated.

It's always easier to stay up for a game that you should win...especially on the weekend. I'm not so sure about the Angels series, though.

I would love to watch a game with you. I will even buy you a few beers... Let me know!

Pete,

Nice blogging so far.
Keep up the good work!

One last comment on the Cabrera issue.
Living in CT, saw a NY sports reporter interview A-Rod in the clubhouse right after the game and asked him, "did you think he [Cabrera] threw at you intentionally?''

Almost before the last words of the question came out, A-Rod said "No".

Although he's not too bright, A-Rod got that one right. Enough said.

Hey Pete,

Do you know how close we are to signing Brian Matusz? It is already August and I am starting to get a little worried.

OK count me in... I'll stay up too.

Speaking of staying, do we think Olson can stay in past the 5th?

I liked that episode too. It was the best.

Nice start to your new blog.

Hey Pete:

How about the O's vs. M's on TV while we play cards, smoke cigars and down some adult beverages. Then we can sleep till noon tomorrow

Pete:

Is it hard to type your blog with those shades on?

I gotta say, I've been pleasantly surprised with the way you have been keeping the blog, Pete. Keep up the good work! I look forward to reading your stuff when I wake up in the morning. Also thanks for the comment about Matusz! I appreciate it.

Pete,

After reading Roch for so long, I'm starting to get used to your style, and I'm liking it!

Great starting week!

Peter: Appreciate your adult approach to commentary that is well informed, witty and not absorbed with self ,except in an amusing way. Also appreciate you not musing political and patronizing. We need more SPORTS reporters like yourself.

..............................................................................................
Ross: Thanks. My jaundiced view of politicians on both sides of the aisle may occasionally prompt a barb, but this blog is going to be heavily tilted toward baseball.

Pass on Teixeira? That's crazy talk. With him in the lineup, it puts much less pressure on getting a top notch SS. Teixeira with one of the many free agent SS's would look great. Then got an add a veteran starting pitcher not named Trachsel, then throw all the AA starters in the mix.

Do you like margaritas with or without salt?

.............................................................................................
Mark, nobody worth their salt would drink a margarita without it. pete

Castro is a better than average SS.
At least he doesn't double clutch before he throws the ball. Sick of watching Fahey do it.

You would like me Pete. I am in worse shape than you. Can't get my exercise in the winter. It doesen't snow here in Fla. Still have the shovel. Great conversation piece.

...............................................................................................
O Fan: Don't dispair. As you can see, I do a lot of shoveling and it hasn't snowed here in six months.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
