MVO update

Nothing's official yet, but I'm getting the sense that starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie is getting a lot of love in our premature Most Valuable Oriole poll. Guthrie's having a great season, even if the won-loss record doesn't fully reflect his performance. I don't know if that makes him the most valuable guy on the team, however.

We're going to keep accepting votes until 5 p.m. (EDT). List your top three choices in order. If you list five, I'll give you extra credit toward your grade at the end of the semester, but I'm only assigning points for the first three. If you choose only one, I will count it as a first-place vote. And if you vote for Brian Roberts in all three spots (and, yes, I mean you Gingersnap), it's only going to count as one first-place vote.

1. Markakis. There's no second place for me. I'll throw Roberts right in there too with Huff and Guthrie. But nobody comes close to Markakis. 100% every night. Just goes about his business. We'd be lost w/o him.

Its funny how Millar is like overappreciated, I can't think of anyone who's recorded the last out of a game more than him...ever. I wish we could look that up. Or should I say, pop that up.

1) Guthrie
2) Roberts
3) Markakis
4) Jim Johnson
5) Aubrey Huff

1. Brian Roberts - best all around player on this team.
2. Jeremy Guthrie - just get him some run support.
3. Aubrey Huff - the only bat to consistantly be afraid of.
4. Kevin Millar - the leader of this team.
5. George Sherrill

Guthrie,J
Markakis, N
Roberts, B
Jones, A
Johnson, J.. and yes that is a vote for Jim Johnson.. guy has been lights out for most of the season.. has a 1.94 ERA in 60.1 innings of work..

I am surprised at the amount of votes for Sherrill. He really hasn't been that impressive and when you consider how little he plays in comparison to the others, he just shouldn't be in the conversation. Roberts makes our team go. Look at his stats when we win vs when we lose. The Orioles go as Roberts goes. When he hits, we win and when he doesn't, our offense shuts down and we lose. He plays stellar D and sets the table. He's the guy with Markakis in second and Huff third.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
