MVO results in
The polls just closed and the results have already been tabulated, thanks to the fancy Diebold touch-screen machine I just bought on eBay. Can't vouch for it's accuracy, but if it's okay for the state of Maryland, that's good enough for me.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie would be the Most Valuable Oriole if the election were held today, according to my highly scientific blog poll. He received the most first place votes (36) and the most points (239), based on a 5-3-1 point system for the three-place ballot.
It wasn't a walkoff, however. Guthrie got 36 of the exactly 100 legitimate first-place votes cast (see illegitimate first-place votes below). Aubrey Huff got 21 and Brian Roberts got 20. The only other player in double figures was Nick Markakis with 14. Guthrie and Huff were much closer in the final point totals, which take into account second and third-place votes.
Baltimore Sun Orioles beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec, who got this ball rolling on my WBAL radio show on Sunday, expressed some surprise at the outcome.
"It surprises me a little,'' he said. "I'm always a proponent of giving team MVP awards to everyday players. But it's hard to argue about Guthrie. The guy is among the league leaders in quality starts and has been the only constant on the staff."
Here's the final count, with first place votes in parentheses and the point totals:
Player
Jeremy Guthrie (36) 239
Aubrey Huff (21) 213
Brian Roberts (20) 150
Nick Markakis (14) 140
George Sherrill (5) 33
Jim Johnson (1) 16
Melvin Mora (1) 6
Kevin Millar 6
Adam Jones 3
Luke Scott 1
Others receiving votes: Dave Trembley, Andy MacPhail, Terry Crowley, Matt Wieters, Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada.
Big Al gets special mention for his first place vote, which went to former Seattle Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi.

Repost from me, I thought it was very funny....I plan on keeping my day job
Should have traded Waters after the Angels game! His stock was at an all time high. What is Andy Mac doing!!! Make the trade, do not sit on guys like Waters. Now he is worth nothing. We missed the boat on that one. Pathetic. Should have traded him for a Major league ready power hitting and good defensive SS. I am done with this team.

Hey Schmuck,
A.M. for GM of the year. Those 2 blockbuster trades have paid tremendous dividends this year and it's just the start. Keep the plan going and Go O's!

Pete, was looking through the Sun's listing of countries and their winning medal totals. Don't you think the local paper should include in the list of countries Towson? Though not technically a country, I do believe Towson proper (now that is an oxymoron) is bigger than the Vatican. And when the Sun does list the medal totals for the Republic of Towson, don't let them forget Towson Catholic's own Carmelo along with Michael and Katie.
And if the Republic of Towson is to have a flag, something in Madras with a picture of a lab in the top left corner seems about right.

I am a huge fan of Guthrie and what he has brought to the team this season, but there is no way he is the MVP. He only factors into 20-25% of our games and even in the ones where he pitches, players like Roberts, Huff and Markakis are often equally responsible for the win. To me, it's Roberts who makes our team go and leads on and off the field, but I understand the argument for Huff as well. Regardless of the great season Guthrie is having, he is NOT our MVP!

we're on pace for 5 guys w/ at least 20 HRs. Last season we did that? of course 1996, 7 guys and a surely-never-to-be-broken O's record 257 team dingers

Ok, is the Sarfate experiment over NOW?

Pete's reply: It was over last week, but Penn came up with a sore shoulder.

The object was to not replace a player performing badly with a player who is performing worse..Brian must be working on his stuff down in Norfolk figuring that he doesn't need to do that much to get back.

Well, I guess we can say that the Sarfate starting experiment is not paying instant dividends. In fact, I'm wondering why Trembley doesn't send him down to the minors to learn another pitch and some control would be nice too.
Houston knew which pitchers to dump in the Miggy deal-2 sore-arms and a wild man. We end up with Constanzo, whose buried in the minors somewhere, leaving Scott as the only decent player in the bunch. He's not exactly a superstar and is someone who will likely get traded in the off-season anyway.
Around and around the rebuild goes. Poor Trembley must feel like he's rolling the dice everyday someone not named Guthrie takes the ball. The depressing part of all this is that today's starting lineup is aging and full of journeymen. While I admire the fight of the veterans, sending them out on a regular basis in the dog days of August serves no real purpose. We need to see if guys like Montanez can play.

Bavasi!? Hahahahahaha. Oh, we're gonna hear about this one for years now. It's nice to see our team on the right side of these things every now and then.

What a joke. Granted Guthrie is the best pitcher on the squad but he's still 9-8. Huff is the MVP so far and I'm sure the reason he didn't win was because fans still have the chip on their shoulders for what Huff said in the off season.

i guess sarfate wanted to make his last start a memorable one.
Nice job. Lessons learned all around...

Good going Andy McFailure. You've brought the Birds to an all time low--the cellar dwellers with your trades not-and firings. Peter Angelos deserves better than you. I think they better give you a cut in pay.

Pete's reply: If you think this is an all-time low, you weren't paying attention the past 10 years. It's time for a perspective check.

What do you expect from a fan of Angel, whomever that is?
This team for the most part has played exciting baseball and has been in a lot of the games they have lost. They've shown good effort most nights. The offensive numbers for this team are almost unbelievable considering when most experts wrote out the lineup for this team they couldn't get past, 4) 1b: Kevin Millar; without laughing.
We've still got a while to go in the season, but this team is closer to .500 than any team has been in the last 10 years.
We've got some young and real talent on the team for once. Nick Markakis is bonafide. Adam Jones was looking very good before he got hurt. Matt Wieters is destroying ever level of the minors he has played in. Chris Tillman is mowing down everybody.
If we can get a couple of starters that won't give up 5-6 runs in 2 innings, we might have a chance for a winning season.
