More than a feeling
Sure enough, the Orioles have allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to claim reliever Chad Bradford and will get a player to be named later...probably not Evan Longoria.
Bradford's name had been floating around before the July 31 deadline for completing trades without waivers, so this is not a total surprise. He still has about $4.5 million left on the three-year, $10.5 million contract he signed before the 2007 season. Since the Rays claimed him on waivers, they'll be picking up the remainder of that deal, giving the O's additional payroll flexibility going into the offseason.
Andy MacPhail made no bones about that when I talked to him a few minutes ago.
"We just thought going forward, it gives us an opportunity for other people in our system who have some upside, to get a look for the rest of '08 and '09. I think we have that guy (a right-handed setup guy) in our system and I'm going to need to fill some other needs, so I can use the dough."
Don't misunderstand. MacPhail conceded that it will be hard to replicate Bradford's performance, but the tilt toward younger players has begun.

I like this move and truthfully I wouldn't be upset to see a few more players go...McPhail has done a great job so far and his timing for bringing people up fhrough the system has been pretty good. Keep it going AM, job well done.

My initial reaction is "That's disappointing!"
We'll have to see what the O's end up getting in return, but a player to be named later isn't likely to make any real impact to the club's future.

I guess we can rule out Chad Bradford T-Shirt Tuesday next month.

While it's nice to help the D-Rays, I wish they had gotten something back. A PTBNL usually ends up being an organizational soldier. I don't mind at all seeing vets traded, but this looks like a straight salary dump, and Bradford wasn't that expensive in contemporary baseball.

It's a shame. I liked Bradford and as far as what is down on the farm, I'm not sure what McPhail is talking about. He, however, knows a helluva lot more about baseball than any of us, so "In Andy we trust." Bradford was a good guy when he was here. Had a fun delivery to watch and got people out. Good luck to him and to Tampa as well. If they win the division it means that either the Sox or the Yankme's are screwed and that is a good thing in my estimation.

Possibly read building the coffers for a run at a Free Agent First Baseman?

Maybe the Orioles will get Reid Brignac!!!

Honestly, I'm not unhappy to see him go. Seemed like a gimmicky pitcher that could go haywire any moment.
No one should ever be in danger of giving up a gopher ball because his knuckles scraped the mound.
My question, what exactly does a "player to be named later" mean? Was there options offered to MacPhail? Does the player depend on Bradford's performance?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Usually the player is predetermined or there is a group that Andy can select from at the end of the year.

So how does this work, do we get to pick from a group of players or does Tampa decide who to send us??? Details...
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The PTBNL generally is agreed upon when the deal is made or the team gets a list to choose from at some later date.

How about Price instead of Longoria?
Could MacPhail be talking about Jim Johnson as the guy they have in their system? Good deal for the O's. I could live with a bullpen starting with Johnson and Sherrill setting up Ray, all while saving the $4 mill on Bradford.
Now do the same with Walker and Payton.

On the surface, is doesn't appear that this was much more then a salary dump. Perhaps the player to be named will be meaningful (I sense that it will be another untility IF), but on the surface it seems that we should have been able to get a good AA prospect for him.

Peter,
Does you gut tell you who that player to be named later will be???

Pete's reply: I'm guessing Rocky Cherry, but just a guess.

I agree with Andy. He's going to have more options next year, especially if Ray comes back healthy. We have Ray, Johnson and Sherrill for the back end of ballgames, and young guys like Albers, Bierd and McCrory on the way. I think Liz should be turned into a reliever as well. While I am sad to see Bradford go to a division rival, we aren't going to be competitive for at least 2 years, and by that time Bradford's contract will be up. As loaded as Tampa's system is, hopefully Andy can get a sleeper that will surprise some folks. Even an "organizational soldier" could have some value in our farm system, as we don't have much depth.
I do like the fact that he's trying to save some money. It does sound as though the Orioles may make a run at Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, or Rafael Furcal/Orlando Cabrera. That would be nice!!!!

How about Eva Longoria instead of Evan Longoria? Just think of the improvement to the clubhouse morale!

Andy still has to clean up Flanagan's mess. Bradford has been solid in the pen but overpaid to say the least. There are so many players that the O's have under contract for are average players with above average money tied to them. It makes the process of trading them a bit more difficult.

Wow - I thought everyone was clamoring for the Orioles to just get rid of the older guys in exchange for anything, a case of bats, a box of balls, or just to get rid of them so the guys we had in the minors could be unblocked and we could see who could play. The first move is made and there is a lot of commotion about who are we getting in return, why don't we know, did we give up too much and not get anything solid back, etc. I think this is a perfect move and what was expected.
Sometimes that PTBNL is a guy that won't clear waivers right now so the deal can't be finalized till after the season. Since the O's don't need the guy now, it doesn't really matter. And it's not like not having Bradford is going to cause the rest of the season to go in the toilet for the O's. Good move Andy. Good luck, Chad. BTHO Red Sox and Yankees.

I can see the reliever is already on the team being Denis Sarfate. I think they might bring up Brad Bergeson and stick him in the starting rotation. Sarfate has clearly shown he is not a starter and his arm will not be stretched out enough to go much further than he has done.

Johnson. Sherrill, and Ray would make one hell of a bullpen.
I would like to c the O's sign C.C. Sabithia over Tex and have Huff play first. Unless the O's can afford both C.C and Tex

Complete trust in AM. Good job. The young players are exciting, and if he feels we have the youngsters ready to play in the big show then lets see them play. This will be an interesting end to the year.

a good move...should help the rays
and help us..IF we get a comer...
if it helps the rays to beat the yanks
and sox...great.

Pete, I'm guessing Rocky Cherry was sarcastic, since he is already in our organization. Came over from the Cubs in the Trachsel trade late last year.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I was talking about who might be called up tomorrow.

I've never really understood the PTBNL deals. In this instance we give up a very serviceable major league pitcher, to a division rival, for a PTBNL who will be someone who is not at the top of Tampa Bay's prospects list. So we give away a proven major league player and get a not so good minor league player from the Rays.
The net is, we weaken our team. So one can only conclude that the move was solely a salary dump, with no effort to get something of equal value in return.

The O's should resign Brian Roberts, who else do they have to play second base. We already have seen how hard it is to replace Miguel Tejada, and if Roberts is traded there will be two giant holes up the middle the the O's. You need a guy like Brian if you expect to sign a guy like Tex in the offseason. And Brian wants to stay with the O's, so thats telling you something reward this guy for his loyality for the last seven years. Nobody else wants to play for the O's

He has a very slender neck, and kind of looks like ET.........
What was the question again???
Posted by: BAR | August 8, 2008 12:04 AM
PTBNL? Woo hoo! Maybe we'll finally get Wade Townsend!
Bradford was great, but for this team, I'd rather have the $$ and the flexibility to go after Tex and some starters for next year. The bullpen is stocked with a healthy Ray + Albers to go with Sherill, Johnson, Bierd, and Sarfate--not to mention guys like Patton and Penn, who could get their shot there the way Johnson did this year.

Pete, is there any chance we could get one of their SS's - NOT Zobrist!.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I guess you can make a wish, but good shortstops aren't generally traded for middle relievers.
