Bowie catcher Steve Torrealba was named Eastern League Player of the Week after hitting .409 during a week in which the Baysox clinched their first playoff berth since 1997 and moved close to the first division title in their history. They were off yesterday before heading into their final seven games of the regular season.

The Orioles will call up a catcher on Sept. 1, and Torrealba is a candidate along with Triple-A catchers Chris Heintz and Omir Santos.

Norfolk pitcher Craig Anderson (7-8) gave up just a run on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings in a 4-1 victory over Charlotte. He got off to a rocky start this year, but is 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA since the All-Star break.

The Frederick Keys got a one-hitter by committee last night when starter Jake Renshaw had to be placed on the minor league disabled list before the game. Five relievers -- Brett Bordes, Ryan Ouellette, Mick Mattaliano, Jose Barajas and Ryan Rodriguez -- combined to pitch the one-hit shutout. Brandon Snyder and Miguel Abreu had three hits each in the 5-0 victory.

Speaking of Anderson, do you think the O's will give him a shot in September?

After the bad start, he's now 6-0 in his last 10 outings, and as mentioned 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA since the All-Star break.

This comes after last years 7-3, 2.97era in AAA.

Pete's reply: I'm going to say that's doubtful, because he's not on the 40-man roster and they're going to have to move somebody off the 40-man just to make room for a third catcher. Anything is possible, however.

Hi Pete,

Going back to the last post about rehabs (and I know I'm about to incur the wrath of many an Oriole fan), but how is Danys Baez progressing? Will he be ready to go by Spring Training next year? I'm hoping he comes back healthy and pitching well, so that we can trade him for a prospect or two at the deadline!

It's good to hear that Chris Ray is on the way back. I'd kind of like to see him work things out in AAA, though, like the Twins did with Liriano (only not keeping him down there as long!).

Pete's reply: I know nobody wants to see Baez pitch here again (I admit, it wasn't pretty.), but he's coming along and there was a time when he was considered a pretty good reliever. If he's healthy and can pitch, why wouldn't you want him back next year? Got to keep an open mind on that kind of thing. The O's have to pay him one way or the other so there's nothing to lose.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
