Earth to O's: Watch out for fraudulent fans
The Orioles are within range of welcoming Camden Yards' 50 millionth fan for tonight's series opener against the Red Sox, and club officials have admitted that they have some leeway in determining who that will be.
There has been some blangst (blog angst) about the possibility that a Red Sox fan might pass through the turnstiles at the appointed moment and win the grand prize ($50,000, season tickets for five years, unlimited access to The Schmuck Stops Here), but the O's have taken that possibility into account.
Since it's not designated as a contest -- which would legally require the Orioles to pick the fan in a totally objective process -- the fan will be chosen by club employees at the approximate moment the 50 millionth fan could be expected to enter Oriole Park. That's fair enough, considering that there will likely be dozens of fans passing through various gates at about the same time.
Presumably, the selection team will be under orders not to pick the drunk guy shouting "GO SAWX!" on his way into the stadium.
I'm still a little concerned, since -- out of the 20,000-or-so Boston fans who will show up tonight and/or tomorrow night -- there probably are a handful of Sox fans clever enough to wear an Orioles T-Shirt to the game.
If I could make a suggestion: A Breathalyzer would clear things up pretty quickly.

Looking ahead to NEXT Monday:
They finish the suspended game from April against the White Sox at 6:05pm at Camden Yards. The O's will be the road team coming up to bat in the top of the 12th.
Some bits of info on that game:
Daniel Cabrera, Chad Bradford (duh), Jamie Walker, Dennis Sarfate and Jim Johnson can't pitch. They all pitched in the first 11 innings. Sherrill pitched the 11th, so if the O's score in the top of the 12th, he could still pitch and try to finish the game.
Based on the current roster, we'd have Cormier, Castillo, F-Cab, Bierd and Rocky Cherry available out of the bullpen still.
For the line-up, Jay Payton pinch-hit and was lifted from the game, so he can't play. Luis Hernandez started at SS, but was pinch-hit for. Quiroz started that game but was pulled. Fahey was the SS when the game was suspended and Adam Jones was in CF, so both of those players will need to be replaced. Alex Cintron, Juan Castro and Luis Montanez will be eligible to enter off the current roster. Millar, Huff and Scott will lead off the 12th, followed by the vacated CF spot and the vacated SS spot.

I think it would be toatally hilarious if the hand picked person turned out to be a Nats "fan". That would make my day. But unfortunately it's rigged so those chances are nil.

Pete,
I would have thought Davey Johnson would have Arrieta pitch every day to send him back to Angelos with a worn out arm.

Wow. They're expecting 20 thousand RedSux fans for this series? It seemed like there were quite a few of them on TV but I didn't know there were THAT many!! Don't those people have lives or anything better to do than to travel around and irritate opposing fans?
Let's hope the lucky fan bleeds black and orange but the odds seem to be against it.
On the subject of pitching, I can wait until next year to see guys like Bergesen. What's the rush? I know we are 'starting pitching challenged' but the downside of having another youngster lit up is that some recover easier than others. I'd keep starting Guthrie, Cabrera, Waters and use Cormier and gasp! Fernando or whoever. Olsen needs to pitch middle relief to build his confidence/sort things out. That's what the O's did in the 'glory days' and that seemed to work.

Boy, you're giving a lot of credit for cleverness to the Sox fans. Besides, would a true RS fan be caught dead wearing the black and orange?

Breathalyzer is a little harsh, as I would say to the potential 50 millionth fan , something along the lines of boy that Youk really sucks and if the reply is " Oh Gawd, You are Wicked Crazy", move to the next fan.

Just check for a full set of teeth and that would rule out most of Red Sox nation.

Lotsa those Red Sox people are from the mid-Atlantic states. They're a national team.

TerryP - unfortunately, there are Sox and Yankees fans all over the country. They even live in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. And it's a lot easier for them to get tickets at Camden Yards than at Fenway or Yankee Stadium so that's another reason there are so many of them showing up all the time. Of course, some of them may be groupies travelling around to different sites, but it's enough of a problem with the ones that are living locally and the ones that are in the area for travels already and just decide to go to the game.

Bucktail, there are very few "true" Red Sox fans among those 20,000...I think I recognize a lot of faces that were wearing Jeter shirts 4 years ago.

Thanks for writing an entire article about this. I work in the sports industry and I couldn't imagine the orioles not thinking about this.

"...there probably are a handful of Sox fans clever enough..."
Almost fell off my chair on that one. Keep the jokes rolling in Mr.Schmuck.

Just wait outside the walk-up window. Most real O's fans ditched their season tix years ago and most Boston fans are getting theirs from the corporate seat holders.

Schmucker...this post made me laugh...thanks!
By the way, it looks like you have created some 'blangst' up here in Boston:

The best part is, in the post prior, the blogger claims that the 'Yard has been 'kept afloat' by visiting Red Sox fans for the last 10 years.
Somebody get that breathalyzer!

hey, that's a pretty good idea, use a breathalyzer to determine a suitable winner for the non-contest. So they set the following criteria: be around the 50 millionth fan, be wearing some O's gear, and fail a breathalyzer. Not a bad idea!!!
