Arrieta's Olympic debut

arrieta.jpgOrioles pitching prospect Jake Arrieta gave up just two singles and struck out seven batters over six shutout innings today in his Olympic debut against China. Team USA scored an easy 9-1 victory.

Arrieta, who was 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 20 starts for Frederick before joining the Olympic squad, had made only one other competitive appearance. He gave up three runs over three innings against Canada in an pre-Olympic matchup on Aug. 4 in Durham, NC.

Here's the game summary from the official Beijing Games Web site.

Jake...

As a Horned Frog alumnus, I would like you to mention Texas Christian University every time you mention Jake. And, please, no more references to Freso Tech, or whatever.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think that's a completely reasonable request, provided your reference to "Freso Tech" was not a reference to Cal State Fullerton, whose five Division I national championships in baseball make the Horned Frogs look like, well, Horned Frogs.

Anyone know what time MSNBC's Olympic coverage will tune into the game?

Let's hope that when the Olympics have concluded, we will find Mr. Arrieta in an Orioles uniform. Let's keep the Big Mo going!!

Awww... got Titan envy, Mick? How cute...

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Lisa, I know it's hard to be humble, but really should be more understanding of the lesser baseball programs.

Good point, Pete. And I do have a friend who went to TCU. So I'll try... I promise. Go, CSF Titans!!

Come on Peter, change it before he has a chance to read your blog.

Grats to Jake. Win the gold USA!

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't know how I did that. Sorry.

It's Jake.... Peter.

For a minute, I thought we signed the wrong Arrieta. Or it could be his twin brother. That would be scary.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Sorry, don't know how that happened. It's been corrected.

Look out for the University of Florida. GO GATORS!!

Whatever.

I busted out laughing on the comment about looking like "horned frogs"

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
