Adam's foot
Team officials haven't said anything yet, but you can bet Adam Jones will not be in the lineup for tonight's series opener in Anaheim. He's having a CT Scan on the left foot today in Southern California and he left the visitor's clubhouse yesterday in a walking boot. It wasn't a fashion statement.
If there's any kind of fracture, that's probably it for this year. If not, he still figures to get a day or two off. Last time I looked, he wasn't about to play in his 2,345th consecutive game, so there's no reason to send him out there until it feels right.
Payton can use the playing time, anyway.

Hi, Pete
Has anybody noticed that Brian Roberts is on track to hit 60 doubles this season?
Only 6 others in the history of Major League Baseball have done that, and no one since 1936!!. Earl Webb holds the record with 67 doubles - and of the other 5, 4 are Hall of Famers - Paul Waner, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg and Joe Medwick.
The last player to come close to 60 doubles was Todd Helton in 2000 with 59.
Brian looks like he's going into another one of his hot streaks the last few days, so it would be interesting if he can get the remaining 20 (or more) in his last 52 games.

Thanks for getting back to baseball info. Pretty sure no one cares about Favre anymore.

Gene: The bulk of the info here is going to be baseball, but I'm going to go to the big stories in other sports occasionally. It's okay to be a little eclectic once in awhile. All baseball and nothing else makes pete a dull boy. pete

Speaking of waiting, I'm still waiting on the Gil's Pizza you are sending me. Meatsauce and double cheese please. Can't find a decent pizza down here.

Do I look like a guy who likes pizza? pete

I don't think I want Payton to bat number two in the lineup. He's better suited for 7th or 8th. Put Cintron in the second spot.
Payton was terrible yesterday, 0 for 4. The results are there.

I'd probably stick with Payton. People go 0 for 4 once in awhile. pete

Pete,
You showcasing Payton?!

I know that people can go 0 for 4. But if you watched him for these 4 at-bats, he was terrible. He's too aggressive for his own good.
Swinging at the first pitch, and then popping it up.
Doesn't he realize the number two guy needs to be patient and take pitches, get the pitcher to work, and then do some situational hitting?

I'd love to see us take a page out of Washington's book and just release Jay Payton and stick either Reimold or Montanez in the lineup. I know its not his natural position, but move Markakis to center field if Adam is just going to be out a few days. Washington realizes its not competing anytime soon and is getting rid of older guys who are not part of the long-term answer. It's time the Orioles do the same thing. Bedard, Tejada and Gibbons were a great start, but we still have 15-20 guys on this roster who are not part of the plan for 2010 and beyond, while we have a few guys (not many) in AA and AAA who might be. Unless they are auditioning for a trade, there's no reason for guys like Jay Payton and Melvin Mora (and really Ramon Hernandez, too) to be playing while we could elevate Reimold, Montanez, Scott Moore, Oscar Salazar or Matt Wieters and let them play. I think most fans would rather the O's lose 95 games with 2010's team than only lose 85 with what is really still the 2007 team.
Oh and Ben W. Jay Payton wasn't just terrible yesterday. He's pretty terrible everyday. He gets on base less than 30% of the time; you're right he should never be hitting 2nd.

I agree with bringing Reimold or Montanez up to finish out the year if Jones can't but I doubt Trembley or McPhail would do that. They rather bring up Redman and let Payton play out there every day. Why? Payton will be gone after this year and we need to start seeing what the kids can do. Same with the AA pitchers. The O's just seem so ham-handed in everything they do including signing Matusz. They didn't contact the kid for a week? Pure incompetence.

Agreed. Payton doesn't have the talent to be and doesn't even try to act like a # 2 hitter when in the two hole. He's done much better lately than earlier in the season (overall), but he still should never start. Nobody who is a consistent sub 30% OBP guy should even be in MLB.

Why is it that baseball players almost never apply ice when something happens that will obviously result in swelling and/or bruising? Are they just being macho? Or are they just being stupid? I've played a lot sports and done a lot of physicial labor, and if I'm hit by a baseball or drop a brick on my foot, I ice it IMMEDIATELY and almost never have significant bruising (even when it's turned out to be a break). Wouldn't it make more sense to take Jones out of the game as a precaution, ice it, and decrease the likelihood of multiple days out of the line-up. Next time Mora is hit by a pitch, tape an icepack to the area and then let him run the bases. Instead, Melvin plays on and then sits out the next game with swelling and bruising. Make/let the trainer do his job.
