Welcome to my world

The first thing I’d like to do before I unlink my tether from the journalistic mother ship and float off into the blogosphere is to separate fact from fiction with a quick game of True or False.

True or false: Peter Schmuck has relocated into cyberspace and will no longer be the bright, insightful and wildly popular columnist we’ve come to love in the print edition of The Baltimore Sun.

False. I will continue to write two or more columns per week on a variety of subjects for both the print edition and the Web site.

True or false: Peter Schmuck’s extensive experience covering the Orioles, Dodgers, Angels and the NFL makes him uniquely qualified to take you inside the Orioles clubhouse and the Ravens locker room.

True. It’s either that or his slightly twisted view of the sports world.

True or false: Peter Schmuck will spend less time at sporting events and more time sequestered in his basement knocking out humorous and informative blog commentary.

False. I will actually spend more time at sporting events and team headquarters providing up-to-the-minute coverage of local and national sports.

True or false: Peter Schmuck once had his request for a vanity license plate bearing his surname rejected by the California Department of Motor Vehicles for being “obscene and offensive to public decency.”

True. Yes, that really happened.

True or false: Peter Schmuck was a nationally ranked table tennis player as a teen.

True. My only sports claim to fame was being ranked 969th in the nation by the United States Table Tennis Association when I was 19. I believe there were about 975 ranked players at the time.

True or false: Peter Schmuck is an egomaniac who took up writing because he was never very good at anything.

False. I am an egomaniac who took up writing because they don’t pay people to do anything else I’m any good at.

True or false: Peter Schmuck hates cats.

False. I actually like cats, in reasonable numbers. There is no good reason to have 117 cats unless you operate a licensed animal shelter.

True or false: Peter Schmuck is the only Peter Schmuck who will come up if you Google search “Peter Schmuck.”

False. There is another Peter Schmuck who is an internationally recognized psychologist.

True or false: This Peter Schmuck could use an internationally recognized psychologist.

True. Enough said.

Check back here frequently for team updates, timely insights and touchy subjects. To quote the great actor Al Pacino, “I’m just getting warmed up!”

Since we are losing the one and only Roch...I guess its fitting that the Schmucker will take his place. Welcome aboard Mr. Schmuck...I always have enjoyed your articles.

Welcome to the Blogworld. Yeah, I know, it's usually called the blogosphere. But if you can bring a little contrarian attitude to it then so can I. I look forward to polluting, er, populating your pages with my own attempts at analysis, commentary, and general expression of opinion, whether I know what I am talking about or not. But at least I promise to use appropriate punctuation. Most of the time.

Schmucker, from the your pic it looks like you lost some weight. You look in better shape than half of the Ravens O-Line.

Welcome to the blogosphere.....we promise to take it easy on you the first 90 days. After that, your toast!

Your new blog coincides with Roch's departure. It looks like the biggest switcharoo since:

Dick Sargent replaced Dick York on "Bewitched."

Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as Van Halen's frontman.

Coy and Vance replaced Bo and Luke Duke.

Kidding aside, I look foward to your blog and I hope you keep your radio gig.

Firstly, I refuse to call myself
"Jeff from Schmuck-ville"
a.) It makes no sense
and
b.) Since many of the people in my family speak yiddish, well...you figure it out.

Secondly, you'll have to identify where you sit in the O's pressbox- As with Roch- I will yell up "Hey Schmuck!!" at games and will have all my children do the same. We have to inculcate positive social conduct in our kids. Besides that, it will be really funny when my kids tell their teachers at school about the Schmuck they visited when they went to the game.

Thirdly, if you respond in as positive a way as Roch, we'll get along fine and I'll read your columns and blogs.

Finally, welcome to this world. I hope that you enjoy being here and that we enjoy having you.

Jack, they obviously air-brushed Peter's photo above. Good luck with the Blog, Mr. Schmuck.

Get some pants that fit!

Are you sure you wouldn't rather take the buyout?

Those are my Manny pants.

Peter,

Welcome to cyberspace, where sometimes people have a way of disappearing from reality.

Roch set the bar pretty high, but judging from your articles, you should be able to keep the conversation going.

I am glad to see that gray-haired guys (like you and me) can blog.

Go O's!

Peter, MacPhail says that he sees nothing on the horizon as far as trades go. He said the same thing right before the Tejeda and Bedard deals. Posturing?

Jeff, Yes and no. There hasn't been a lot of buzz around the O's this week, which surprises me a little, but Andy is a guy who keeps things very close to the hip. If he has something going on, he probably wouldn't say so publicly right now. I wouldn't rule out a deal involving one of the relievers, but a month ago I thought there would be much more smoke than we're seeing with the waiver deadline just a day away.

I moved from Baltimore to Arizona 6 years ago. I have followed your articles over the years name notwithstanding. I am looking forward to the blog.

Bruce, tell these people that 100 degrees in Arizona only feels like 85 degrees in Baltimore. I'm originally from the Southwest and nobody believes me.

Dan Cody isn't practicing today, injured. Go figure.

What are you all looking at? Your commenting on Peter Schmuck losing weight, wearing Manny pants, etc. Did you realize that the best reason to log on to this blog is to see the advertisement for the Ravens Cheerleader Swimsuit calendar that is off on the side. Geez!

this should be interesting...for the sweep today, make it happen dennis.

Hate to see Roch go...
Glad to see ol' PS pick things up.

I think his blog should be called "Shut the Schmuck Up". I hate this guy. He isn't and will never be a replacement for Roch. LONG LIVE ROCH!!!!

So, are we going to get injury updates and rosters move during the day like we've come to expect or more restaurant reviews? Don't disappoint, Peter - the O's coverage is the last reason I'm still reading this dying entity that employs you.

Peter - any truth to the rumor that a "rift" exists between DT and MASN or DT and MacPhail?

---------

Dan, I haven't heard that, but I do know that the old school baseball people can get frustrated with all the bells and whistles that come with wall-to-wall television coverage. If somebody had tried to put a headset on Gene Mauch in the fifth inning, somebody would have been wearing his rear end for a hat.

"Are you sure you wouldn't rather take the buyout?" - Baltimoron

That's kind of funny, you have to admit.

Remember Peter, your blog is for the rest of world of cyberspace to be entertain and educated to Baltimore sports but also reveal that we are more aware of sports better than and of the major cities around us.

OK guys, We're having too much man love going on for Roch and Schmuck (not that there is anything wrong with that).
I'm going to Scores to get my head on straight.

I immediately tagged this site as a favorite as I always look forward to your commentary. It's a good thing your name is Schmuck. "The Smith stops here" just doesn't work.

P.S. I like the pants. I like your writing. Keep up the good work.
Who the hell is Roch???

Peter
Big shoes to fill, Roch did a great job. But I couldn't think of a better replacement. FYI. We like the blog updated frequently.

On to the O's. I listened to your show last Saturday and you didnt see much of a future in the rotation for Burres, Liz, and Olson. I agree with Burres and Liz, but I think Garret Olson has some potential. He is a young lefty with good stuff that is already having success striking out major league hitters. Dont you think its a little early to give up on him?

With a name like Schmuckers you know it has to be good!

OK, I guess you inherit the crazies from Roch!! Thanks for giving us a forum to sound off.

Based on the last couple of nights, I think the Brewers still need pitching help. I'd try to package Sherrill and D-Cab for Escobar and maybe one of their lower level outfield prospects.

Hello Peter,
Welcome.
I'm really looking forward to be updated with your blog entries.
I'm from Venezuela and sometimes it's kind of hard to get some info from here.
Roch's Blog helped a lot.
At least three of us (O's Fans in Venezuela) read your articles and enjoy them.

You'll know you/we have turned the corner when your blog gets more hits than Roch's is getting even though he is gone.

Good luck with the blog ... from the only Eagles fan who will talk to you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gordon, didn't you get the memo. Eagles fans love me now. pete

Ease our pain...

Roch's blog was my most special place in all the world, Peter. Once a blog touches you like that, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child.

Build a new blog and we will come.

Peter, people will come Peter. They'll come to sunspot.net for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll click on your picture not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your latest entry as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, I won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and a blog they lack. And they'll read through the comments; sit in their underwear on a swivel chair. They'll find they have something to post somewhere along one of the blog entries, where they posted when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll read the blog and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come, Peter. The one constant through all the months, Peter, has been blogging. The O's and Ravens have rolled by like an army of steamrollers. They have been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But blogging has marked the time. This newspaper, this blog: it's a part of our past, Peter. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Peter. People will most definitely come.

I have to echo some sentiment around here that Peter, you will have some large shoes to fill. Even though you are older and more accomplished than Roch, no one is going to cut you slack if this blog isn't updated frequently with inside O's news and insight. That said, there's no reason to believe you won't, and it's exciting to read a new blog. Let's hope it lives up to what everyone is used to around here.

No mention of Montanez, Reimold, and Weiters (4 for 5, 1HR, 5 Rbi's) having a combined 10 hits last night. Come on Peter!!!

And how were Arieta's Olymipic bullpen sessions?

We will demand a lot from this blog!!

I respect that my opinion has the same value as everyone else’s but I think we should all remember that Peter Schmuck did not cause Roch Around the Clock to leave the Sun. Roch Around the Clock is not gone, it’s just going to be living somewhere else.

Peter Schmuck writes a good column and we should all remember that. Read him because you enjoy his style and read Roch at his new home because you enjoy Roch’s style.

Give Peter a chance.

Well, well, well... Peter the Yankee Abuser (as are the O's the last two days) enters cyberspace. I'm sure you'll be able to generate a lot of cyber-venom toward the Yanks here, eh? Look forward to keeping up with how you do in this new arena. Best o' luck.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
C'mon, everybody knows how much I love the Yankees and Eagles. pete

Welcome aboard.

Old guys who don't understand the nuances of luge just shouldn't blog. Sorry--that's just the way it is.

No more Rock? What the Schmuck?

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Eddie, don't fret. I'm pretty sure Roch still exists. pete

Peter,
I'm looking forward to reading your blog as much as I enjoy you articles.

maybe when all the blogs are said and done people will watch you as you walk down the street and say " there goes peter schmuck. the best there ever was in the game."

did you also inherit roch's chevy cavalier?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pop, Roch and I used to argue over whose old car -- his Cavalier or my Celica -- was the most decrepit and embarrassing. Both, fortunately, have been retired. pete

Peter , welcome abroad . I take it that the Sun asked to start your blog since Roch has departed ? Anyway ,this is my first comment and hopefully , most of us and you can form a new beginning .

Peter , I went to Phoenix two years ago , your comment about Arizona and Maryland temperatures are true . I believe you.

Whew! Scores got me on track.

Now, back to the O's. Philly lost their 3rd baseman last night and are looking at Sherrill. Mora and Sherrill for Howard sound about right? Seriously though, if we don't sign Tex next year, would Burrell be an option?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeff, if you want Howard, it's going to take a lot more than that. I doubt Burrell would be a serious option here, considering that McPhail really is focused beyond next season. pete

Off to a good start, Peter. Ray - if I could figure out how to put a thumbs-up icon in here I'd send one your way - nicely played!

I will second what ofahn and John Lennon said - all we are saying is give Pete a chance!

Here's an observation: although it is often said that pitching is 90% of the game, this year it doesn't matter much who starts for the Orioles, the results are pretty much the same. My supporting data;
Cabrera - 23 starts, 7 wins; Guithre 23 starts, 7 wins; Burres 19 starts, 7 wins; Olson 17 starts, 7 wins; Liz, Lowen and Traschel combined 21 starts, 6 wins. The ratio of starts to wins is virtually the same for all the starters. What do you make of that? I'd say that the outcome of the games is really in the hands of the offense, bullpen, and the fielders when all the starters are more or less avergae.

Eric, that's a pretty interesting theory, which probably would be easy for some stat-freak to rebut, but it still is what it is. I think pitching is 75 percent of the game in the NL and 65 percent of the game in the AL, but that's just me. It's probably simpler to just say, if you're starting pitchers can't win more than one of every three starts, it's going to be a long, hot summer.

Looking forward to reading your blog, Peter. Please try to keep us abreast (I love that word) on the minor leaguers who will one day soon be bringing us back to respectability. Thanks and good luck. Diehard fan.

True or False?

Peter Schmuck is cursed with son who is a deadskins fan.

Disco, I suppose every family has some secret shame that is talked about only behind closed doors. In our home, Redskins memorabilia and souvenirs turn up occasionally to remind us that our son, undoubtedly as a result of poor parenting and evil peer pressure, has gone over to the dark side. Despite attempt to deprogram him, he persists in talking endlessly about the supposed untapped talent of Todd Collins and the legend of Coach Gibbs. Needless to say, we're devastated, though it could always be worse. He could have been an Eagles fan.

You DO have some Skins fans here....watch it.

Burrell?! Please tell me you are kidding. In what way does an aging cancer fit in with the orioles rebuilding plan? First of all I'm from Philly and go to the U so I've heard that Pat is the greatest thing for....about the last ten years and believe me he has done nothing to prove it. Don't be fooled by his good stats this year. He certainly is a decent player, but why bring in a strikeout machine to play OF instead of Scott?! Plus he is going to command WAY more money then he is worth. I'd rather see Huff stick around

Dobbs is better than Mora.

Peter, Great to have you on board.

Peter, I know .500 isn't the goal of any team in MLB, but do you think this years O's going for .500, is a big thing? I mean, after a decade of losing, it shows that even with so many holes, there is hope.

I know Tex is the big thing here, but if you were the GM, wouldn't you rather have 2 starters (not aces), but 2 starters that can eat innings, as in my opinion, the O's would be in the hunt if not for the starting pitching or lack thereof.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Todd, fair question. The way things look right now, the O's aren't going to be in the hunt for Tex (once he plays for Scioscia and goes to the Series, he's going to want to stay there and Arte has plenty of money) and they may have to sign a starting pitcher and shortstop instead. As for .500, I wouldn't sacrifice one 2009 victory to get there, but I think it would be nice. Pete

Welcome to the blog world, even though i'm going to miss roch!Make us proud.

Dave K, You're telling me not to pay attention to the year Burrell is having this year in one breath and then you're paying attention to the year Huff is having in the next. Burrell is only 32 (same as Huff), this will be the 4th year in a row he has over 90 RBIs and 30 or more HRs, while this is the best year Huff has had in 4 years.

If we can get a young talented LFer through trade or FA then of course you take him. It's not my money so I don't care about that. hehe

Roch was Ok, but Schmuck is the only talented sportswriter at the Sun. Somebody should explain to Mike Preston that stirring up fake controversies to milk reactions from the readership is NOT talented writing, it's hack writing. Take him under your wing, Pete. Show him how to be humorous without sounding smarmy. He needs all the help he can get now that he's run Billick out of town and that move is going to look incredibly stupid in short order.

Pete, is it true that your brother legally changed his last name, and if so, what did he change it to?

A word of warning, bloggers expect updates 24/7 365. Chirstmas eve Roch had words for us. Every day at spring training he gave us reports. Hurricanes or snowstorms, the blog always gave us some hope.

Big shoes to follow, you have the talent, but do you have the desire?

...........................................................................................
Can't give you my brother's name if I want to remain ambulatory. He adopted my mother's maiden name. pete

Peter, in an above reply you write "..Andy is a guy who keeps things very close to the hip. If he has something going on, he probably wouldn't say so publicly right now."

I believe you mean "Close to the Chest", as in secretive, cautious. The only thing kept close to the hip would be ..a Gun. So, if that is the case, I wouldn't really bother him until he is ready to speak, unless you can see that the holster is snapped.

............................................................................................
I stand corrected. pete

Pete,
Looking forward to your blog. How about the Yankees getting Pudge from the Tigers?

Yanks got Pudge in exchange for their most hated player (Firestarter Farnsworth). Talk about a swindle. Who's the GM of the Tigers, John Sterling Jr?

As Bud Tucker used to say, "No one flew in on the noon balloon from Saskatoon and asked me, but . . ."

The Orioles need to do what is necessary to continue this upward trend. Sew Roberts, Guthrie, and Markakis to long-term, $$$$$ deals.
Give Cormier and Johnson the chance to start, they can't be worse than Olson and Liz. Rebuilding is a euphamism for losing. Like Tommy Lasorda used to say--it is the job of professional athletes to win.

Daniel Cabrera? He probably meant to come inside, and the ball slipped. I believe umpires give the Yankees a break--so the quickness of the decision to run Cabrera off reflects what I believe is the league's policy to bend decisions towards certain teams.

Other than that, I have enjoyed your comments on the radio, both with sports and politics, as well as your writing. I look forward to the blog.

The Ravens need to get in Jared Gaither's ear and get him back on the field. I'm not saying he's dogging--but come on.

The QB should be Troy Smith--with Flacco right behind. Boller? Trade him to the Redskins, he'll be a great number 3 to Jason and Colt.

Good luck, I'm having trouble imagining anyone filling Roch's shoes, but I've always liked reading your columns, and I'm feeling a little better about losing Roch already (only a little bit, Roch!!).

Roch can tell you how demanding we are ;)

Pete,

Roch is a stud and you have very big shoes to fill. Best of luck.

I'm late in reading this, but welcome Peter. Sorry to see Roch go, but have always enjoyed your stories.

Peter- Now we can all ask you why is it so taboo for Bergeson to get a start? And, why is Reimold still at Bowie and not in LF at OPACY?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan, I think there is the feeling in the Warehouse that Bergeson isn't ready for prime time, but I think we're almost at the point where the team can't be so choosy. The Reimold question is easy enough. LF is one of the few places on the roster where there isn't room, though that could change in the next few weeks if the O's can find a place to send Payton. pete

Welcome!

Looking forward to having continued coverage of the O's (and maybe some other sports info too).

I know that a lot of readers are making the comparison to Roch's Blog. I am sure you know this, but you will have much better success doing it your way, than to try to copy. That being said, I really like being kept up to date on the farm situation given the O's are in a rebuilding phase, and I think we all want to know what the roster will be made up of the next 2-3 yrs!

Bad move by Orioles. Try and win now. Not happening by Orioles; more of the same since firing Davey Johnson in 1997.

Here's a conspiracy theory:

Manny to the Dodgers and Texiera to the Angels. Hmm. Sounds like a marriage made in the commisioner's office. A freeway World Series would attract alot of attention and a lot of dough.

On this date Brooks Robinson hit into a major league record
4th triple play of his career. Give me Mike Schmidt any day.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: While you're speaking blasphemy, why don't you throw in Ron Santo for good measure.

What a BS Call against Suggs!!!! That is 2 in a row the Ravens should have won but got away. Last week was Johnson's bone head play this week the refs blow it!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
