Time's Up
So Andy wasn't blowing smoke when he said nothing was going to happen today. The Orioles stood pat, which means they'll probably wait around for a contending team to suffer a big personnel hit in August.
The day seemed relatively uneventful baseball-wide, except for the deal that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox for two players, until the Red Sox completed the last-minute three-way deal that sent Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Sox got Jason Bay from the Pirates and the Pirates got four minor leaguers.
The best deal? I'll go with the acquisition of Rich Harden by the Cubs earlier in the month, even though he's lost two of his first three decisions. He's only given up two earned runs in 17 1/3 innings, but is getting Jeremy Guthrie run support. The more obvious choices might be C.C Sabathia to the Brewers, but I think Harden will end up being the better pitcher down the stretch unless he trips over the foul line or something.

Again? Ouch.

ESPN's reporting Manny-Being-Manny was traded to the Dodgers (and Torre?)in a three-way trade with the Pirates. The Mass-Holes get Jason Bay.

Manny was traded to the Dodgers, and Brewers trade for CC was much better

Apparently Manny has been traded to the Dodgers? I just heard this from a friend in LA.....

Schmuck,
Did you jump the gun by saying "For all the posturing by Manny Ramirez and all the speculation about a three-team deal that would have sent him to the Florida Marlins, he's still a member of the Boston Red Sox and figures to finish the season with them.
Frankly, it's fair to wonder how real the Manny stuff was. He pops off every year about being traded and nothing ever comes of it."
It appears Manny is headed to the Dodgers.....
..........................................................................................
I sure did, but when nothing came across by 4:30 or so, I figured the deadline had passed. Silly me. Pete.

Ummm, Mr. new blogger ...
Manny's a Dodger now. So much for your stuff. You're no Roch!
.............................................................................................
Never claimed to be Roch. I'm taller. pete

Wrong Schmuck. The best deal goes to the Dodgers for getting help in the area they needed most. Manny will greatly improve their chances in that division.

It looks like you spoke just a little bit too soon on Manny. Who saw him going to the Dodgers? Anyone?
Of course, we could also discuss Khalil Greene breaking his hand and jeopardizing his season by punching a storage closet last night. Brilliant!

Peter...#1 rule in writing blogs:
Please wait until well after the trade deadline for posting...There was a bigger trade than Griffey today...check out espn
...............................................................................................
My bad. I thought the deadline was 4 p.m. Guess they meant Central time, since this one was announced at nearly five. pete

Oooh... spoke to soon about Manny, Pete!
Roch would have gotten it right. =(
.............................................................................................
No doubt. pete

Oh jeez, stop with the idol worship of Roch! He's a great talent, I really enjoyed his blog, and The Sun will no doubt miss his presence, but Pete isn't exactly a hack! He has a ton of experience in this field and knows Baltimore sports very well. Give him a break, will you? I'm looking forward to reading his blog regularly, as I did Roch's.

I think what happens is that deals are made and submitted to the commish before 4pm but sometimes aren't announced until 5pm or later. Seems like I see at least one blogger or reporter jump the gun every year.

6 game suspension for Cabrera? Has MLB gone insane? Is this partly because of the recent minor league fiasco? Does MLB hate Dominicans?
It just doesn't seem to make sense. I was forced to watch all 3 games of the series on YES network because that's what MLB Extra Innings was showing the games on in San Diego. For the first time ever, I really thought the Yankees broadcasters were completely unbiased. They kept saying that it was obvious the umpires had no feel for the game, that there was no way Cabrera was throwing at ARod in that situation. Then, yesterday, they said the opposite about their own pitcher. They said how obvious it was that Ramirez was throwing at Millar because he had no reaction to his ejection (and the pitch location was way more up and in than Cabrera's).
I just don't see how you can take two starts from one of our only usable starters for a situation in which its impossible to prove that Cabrera acted intentionally.
One more thing about Yankees broadcaster fairness. When the Yankees reliever was tossed, they blamed Giradi and called him out for being hypocritical (I loved it). They wondered how he could grandstand (post Game 2) about how Daniel obviously tried to hit ARod when Joba's been doing the same thing to Youkilis all year and Girardi's been acting as if its completely accidental. I got the sense that Girardi is not well liked by Michael Kay, Paul O'Neil, and John Flaherty.
(And who the hell would change their name to "Joba" anyway.)

I want to change the subject. Pete is one of the two writers at the Sun who has his job because of his abilities.
The Packers have no leverage whatsoever in their stare-down with Favre. Even if they trade him to (for instance) to the Jets for a fifth round draft pick, just to get rid of him. Then, Favre refuses to report. The Jets trade him to Minn. for a first round pick. Everybody but GB wins: Favre gets his wish, the Jets get a first round pick for a fifth, and the Vikings get Favre. GB is bound to lose in this circus, no matter how they try to play it.

Peter - may I call you Peter? How about Pete? My sympathies for you having to put up with everyone second guessing your posting. It was a stunner to me also when I saw the Manny trade reported well after 4:00 for the first time - and to the Dodgers, who had not been even rumored to be in the mix. You know, when you retire from blogging or move to some other gig, then folks will be saying about the next guy, "yeah, but you're no Schmuck!" Hmmm... not sure that is a good example...
Come on over to Connolly's and I'll buy you a drink. Of course, today they are on the house, but still...
..............................................................................................
Thanks. There's a rumor I'll be the guest bartender at Connolly's next week. pete
