Your All-Star

Congratulations to closer George Sherrill, who is the Orioles' lone representative in the All-Star Game.

Brian Roberts didn't make it. In protest, he has a single, home run, two runs scored and two stolen bases today.

Roberts still could be chosen through the All-Star Game Final Vote. But I'm guessing Evan Longoria makes it.

Fernando Cabrera might have to go two innings today. We'll probably see Adam Loewen, as well.  Manager Dave Trembley said Sherrill will pitch the ninth.

I'll post it here instead of posting it again in the old thread;

I cannot believe Pedroia made it over Kinsler.

And Varitek is another absolute joke. He's hitting .219 for christ sakes.

Fan voting is such a great investment, where would we be without it.

You'll need to insert the largest picture of someone rolling their eyes for this sentence.

Why not suggest readers of The Sun vote for Brian Roberts @ mlb.com before ceding the honor to Langoria?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would I like to see Roberts make it? Of course. Do I think it will be Longoria instead, fair or otherwise? Yes. Just one man's opinion. But yes, vote early and often if you feel that strongly about Roberts. - Roch

Moving along;

Congrats George!! You've aged me about ten years this season alone but there is never a doubt when you come in!

So how about this Liz experiment? Going well isn't it? Visions of Daniel Cabrera. I hope it takes Liz several years to develop, too. I love watching a five-year maturation process.

The Orioles pitching depth has been overstated in recent years, and it's showing again this season. I don't think there's a guy in that system the O's can trust at this point. Liz has been awful. Cabrera is up and down. Loewen is pretty bad (and always hurt). Penn is a lost cause. Olson has been erratic and ineffective. Usually, teams hit on one or two guys, but that hasn't happened yet. Is it still early? Sure. But at some point, one of these young guys is going to have to get a clue and demonstrate some semblance of competence at the major league level.

Bye Adam - see you on the DL tomorrow!

Oh, and I predict the Giambino - Yankees nation also extends far and wide. Longoria doesn't have the widespread support.

Maybe the Orioles can just sneak into OPACY on a Saturday night, turn on the sprinklers and flood the field for every future Sunday game, a la “Bull Durham.”

Or sacrifice a rooster.

Dear Loewen;

Grab a bat and go paly with Nolan in Bowie!

=D

Liz needs to go back down to AAA and stay there until he shows some semblance of command. We can't keep starting guys that can't get through 5 innings. I don't know who takes his place but surely we can find someone with better command-Cormier perhaps?
Pretty frustrating right now because just when the offense gets better, the starting pitching goes south.
It's all part of the 'rebuilding process' but we aren't seeing too much progress being made with the starters. Other than maybe Guthrie, the others look inconsistent and more troubling, wild and throwing way too many pitches, which of course, taxes the already worn out 'pen.

So will next year be better if we have
7th Inning Jim Johnson
8th Inning George Sherrill
9th Inning Chris Ray?

Do we expect Sherill to be around that long, or Ray to get his job back?

I don't like the Reds camo, but the Padres is pretty nice actually.

I am switching between three games, and mistakenly confused an O in the outfield with a Ranger because of the blue hat. UGLY

Colin,
I'm not sure what is the cause of the pitching woes for our minor leaguers as they move up to the majors. All of these guys have good stuff (except maybe Olson), but they've all come up and struggled mightily to throw strikes and work ahead in the count. These guys are all rated pretty highly by the prospect evaluators (Baseball America), so I've wondered for a while if the problem isn't just that our minor league instructors put the emphasis on the wrong things. I would rather have a guy work in A ball on hitting a dime with his fastball before worrying about the secondary stuff. Teach these guys not to be afraid of contact and to control their fastballs to all parts of the plate. This shouldn't be as hard as our pitchers make it seem.

wow... listening to some of you whiners talk and talk about this is wrong and that is wrong is just f'n depressing. Last time I checked were above 500 and playing ball with heart. Why don't you guys shut your mouth for two seconds and enjoy what has been the most enjoyable season in the past decade.

Just another example of how baltimore doesnt support its franchises. They couldnt even vote in Brian Roberts. Hmmm, If he were a Cub now, I bet he would've made it. The only allstar to make it was because you have to have a representative from each team. He'll never see the field. Fourth Place and there's a buzz that this team is good?... Didn't Mazzili have them in first or near it at the all star break. New Players, same result.

Roberts and Kinsler deserve it over Pedroia. Varitek is a complete and utter joke of a selection. What's the latest on Loewen?

Roch, dod you think Anita will be upset that Shaq wasn't named to the All Star team?

Guthrie is the only player on the staff who can consistently throw strikes. And Trembley takes him out too early, as well...

Huh. They still play the All-Star Game every year? I thought it went the way of Laser Discs and Members Only jackets. Neat...

Roch

Sherrill wasn't "voted" in. He was named an All Star.

I wrote that he's the lone All-Star rep. I didn't say he was voted in. - Roch

If every regular reader of this blog votes 10 times a day all this week for Roberts, we would probably be enough to put him on the team. Vote more than that and we'd really get somewhere!

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2008/fv/ballot.html

Longoria is deserving too, all of them deserve it more than Veritek....

If an Oriole reliever is going to be the teams only represenitive then it should be JJ. Sherrill has the save stat (which is a pretty worthless stat) but JJ has outperformed him over the course of the season.

Maybe you didn't write the headline but your name is on it.

Exactly. We don't write the headlines. - Roch

Some friends and I were discussing the "fan" vote earlier today while fishing. We have decided next year they should remove the team names from behind the player names....thus a "fan" cannot blindly vote for my boston team or the spankee's though there are better players at the said postions. It is quite sad to see players and not just Roberts and not just Orioles that are deserving, get kicked to the side because a "fan" voted for all the Red Sux...

Don't blame the O's fans. Blame Fox, ESPN and every other channel that plays only NY or Boston games. Pedroia is a solid 2B he does have more R and RBI then Roberts. But Brian does lead in doubles and triples.

But Varitek making it while hitting under .220? Seriously? .661 OPS?

Man I think the AL wants to lose the AS game.

Roch, Kevin Millar needs to have a talk with you about cowboying up for the home team. There is no question that Roberts, the AL leader in both doubles and triples, deserves to be on the All-Star team, and his hometown fans and even the media should be behind him 100%, no excuses. At least one more player will have to be added to the roster as an injury replacement in addition to the final vote winner, so there is still a chance for Brian to make it as he sorely deserves to.

You want to know why the ASG selection process is a sham..... a player with a .216 BA made the team.... Gimme a freaking break.

Roch: The link on the baltimoresun.com front page says "voted".

I think Longoria gets in, and deserves to.

Oh and also I'd like to mention that I am not a homer when it comes to voting. I vote for the best offensive player at the position. Which was Kinsler. So I used 20 of my votes for him and 5 for B-Rob.

Now the only position I did vote on an Oriole the whole time was Markakis. He seems to be one of the top 3 OF IMO.

pelham--I thought we lost you in the "Taking of Pelham, 1,2 3." Nice to know you survived. And with spirits so upbeat.

Too bad you keep grounding out into that pitcher to catcher to first double play.

Do you think you might want to alert the person who wrote the headline (who doesn't seem to know what they are writing about) that the link with your name on it linking to your blog is incorrect on the frontpage?

If it were my name on it, I'd certainly want it to be correct seeing as I cover baseball and specifically the Orioles.

Shawn--- you don't think defense matters at all even in the middle infield? Ian Kinsler leads the world in errors and his range isn't good either. A good argument could certainly be made for Markakis but Roberts is easily more outstanding for his position.

And you give Pedroia credit for more R and RBI than Roberts? Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with hitting in a murderer's row lineup instead of batting ahead of Melvin Mora and Kevin Millar and behind a bottom of the order than can't get on base to save their lives, could it? Roberts has a better on base percentage and a better slugging percentage.

I just voted at least 100 times (which shows why this is a joke) for Roberts. If all your readers did the same maybe he would have a shot. I stopped after a while as I couldn't do any more, but I could probably have gone on forever.
For once why don't we outdo those other cities and stop whining about how someone else gets it and win one for BRob! It is a lousy system but we CAN take advantage of it if we want to!
VOTE,VOTE,VOTE and VOTE again!!!!!

I just voted for Brian Roberts 25 times.

I also voted for Brian, but is Brian even interested in going to the All-Star Game this year? Brian appears to be the type of guy that if he isn't even voted in to go to the All-Star Game, that he would still support whomever of the O's is selected to go.
