Walking off with one

The club handed out Orioles Magic DVDs to its fans tonight. Nice timing.

Luke Scott’s walk-off home run in the 10th inning, a 420-foot blast onto Eutaw St., gave the Orioles an 11-10 victory, after Ramon Hernandez led off the ninth inning with a homer to tie the game.

Scott has 17 homers on the year. Before the season, manager Dave Trembley projected that Scott would be a 20-plus homer guy.

“I had an advantage because, one, I know the guy because he lives so close to me in the off-season. Two, I managed against him when I was at Bowie. And three, his record is very clear, that he’s a streak guy and he’s a second half of the year guy at every level he’s been,” Trembley said. “Right field is very friendly for him here. And he has just adapted extremely well. We thought he’d hit 20-plus home runs and be a guy that, between him and maybe another guy, would make up for the run production that we lost moving Miggy.”

Scott flung his helmet and slid across the plate.

“I’ll take it every darn night if it turns out like this,” Trembley said.

The Orioles caught a huge break in the top of the 10th. Placido Polanco was safe at the plate on Gary Sheffield’s single, but umpire Brian Runge called him out.

Hey, it all evens out in the end, right?

I left in the 2nd inning.

Whoops.

Whew! That was a sweet one. Breaks the one run game losing streak, shows the team still has that fighting spirit, production up and down the lineup.
Nice win guys.

You cleaned up Diamond Dave's quote, Roch! He said "every (waterway disruption) night" the first time, THEN said "I'll take it every darn night."

I guess The Sun has language police, huh?

I assume Luke's HR looked as crushed in person as it did on TV? Because that ball looked like it went a mile.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I figured Dave wouldn't appreciate seeing his first version in print, since he quickly went with "darn" the second time. Just doing the man a favor. - Roch

Runge missed the call. So what?! I'm so sick of the Orioles being on the wrong end of those kind of calls, over and over and over again. It was time a call got missed in the O's favor for once.

Or you can just call it say that, like plays at second base, the ball was "in the neighborhood, which is close enough.

Whatever the case, it was a great win for the Orioles who, in case anyone hadn't noticed, aren't going to go away quietly. Gotta have heart!

However or whatever it takes for them to win I'll take it! Go O's! Thank you home plate umpire (lousy call). The Loewen experement will be interesting to follow (good luck Adam you deserve a break). Great job as always keeping us updated ROCH! How do they get around the contract? Interesting......

I liked Mike McCoy, but were the O's looking for major league experience?
I do like Juan Castro to and he'll be my favorite player right now after seeing some highlights of his nice glove work.
Where's Tike Redman anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing him back in the bigs soon.

The O's caught a huge break! Polanco was safe, but it's not like the O's haven't been on the wrong side of umpires' calls this season. Remember Jim Wolf?

Regardless of the team's final record, going to the ballpark has not been this fun since the mid-90's. I have already watched the team come from way back 3-4 times and win some other solid games in between. When you win a game 11-10 plenty has to go wrong and plenty has to go right. I do not think this games warrants an over-analysis. Typical 5-walk Danny. Sarfate was also pretty bad but the offense kept getting it back in chunks. The rest of the relievers were very solid. Most importantly, I think Sherrill has his mojo back and Luke Scott and Melvin Mora are en fuego!

Can't say enough about the team's hitting in the past month. Even I will admit that the Crow probably deserves some serious credit the way the bats are lighting up the scoreboard.

On a side note, my brother got to race Anita and Jeremy to change the bases during the 5th inning which was pretty funny. Anita won but she only had to run to second base whereas her cohost and my brother had to make it to first and third. She certainly plays the "I'm just a girl" card when it's convenient! :)
He said they were all very cool about the whole deal.

Time to break the Sunday curse!

We did get this call - a new trend? Way to go Birds! What a difference a year makes. Last year - seemed like we were always down after the first inning and NO WAY the O's would have a chance. This year - can never assume anything - must wait until last batter of game - GO BIRDS!

Oriole fans have a way of only remembering the calls that went against them, but hopefully this one will be seared into the memory as one that should not have gone in the O's favor. Runge totally blew that call at home and the Orioles ended up winning in the 10th because of it. Now, can they FINALLY win one on Sunday???

Yo Rock, what happened to the guy that got hit in the nose by the fousl ball, that was awesome!

We are very lucky to win this one. This team has heart. Wow, the Tejada trades justs looks better all of the time. Scott will hit 25 HR's and this team doesn't quit the way it did when Tejada was the leader.

g'game

I don't care if Polanco was safe. WIth all the bad calls that went against them in the last few weeks, it's about time they get one back.

We watched the O's game on MASN last night , from 7th inning to Mr Scott's rocket flare ending . We also believe O's caught a big break with Polanco call , he was clearly safe , but who is crying , right ?
What a thriller .

By the way , i been gone for one week [ computer died ] Now its good to be back here with you all .

just like we drew it up, right? Wow, great for us.

And, man, someone needs to put a tent over the Tigers' circus. This team was supposed to win the World Series ? (According to Jayson Stark...or did he say Braves?)

I thinks it's time the O's gave up on Cabrera and traded him. He will never figure it out and he is not a smart player.
I also think the O's need 2 more coaches. A base running coach ( maybe Al Bumbry ) and somebody that can teach our pitchers how to hold runners and how to field their position. 3 errors in one game is terrible.

Polanco, looked out from my box seat! That good ole neighborhood call that I just LOVE! The throw beat him there, glove down...Ump will call that 8 out of 10 times.

Rochheads, I gave our man Roch a stalker visit at the press box. I saw Schmuck checking me out with a concerned look... :-) but his nachos took more concern.
I walked up in front of the pressbox before the game started & shouted out..."Rocco!"... he looked up grinning. It was HOT & I felt like a drowned rat after intense negotiations in the sun & 98 degrees with the tix scalpers in front of the scalp zone. Roch could not have been nicer. We talked about baseball , Loewen, some of you nutcases here :-) & had a nice conversation.
I have to out Roch though. I think he has been on the Hgh with some of the Os! The man has tree trunks for arms. He is cut! Tennis my @ss, he must live in the gym. I am certain that BRob, Tejada, Palmeiro, Grimsley, they must have all dumped their Hgh supplies on Roch when they got caught! I can see it now..."hey, let's hide the stuff at a sportwriters house, MLB would never suspect one of those guys!"
Oh & WHAT a fun game. Had seats THREE rows behind the Tigers dugout. Got to really see it all. I liked seeing the veins sticking out of Leland's neck after his 15th trip onto the field. I thought the man was going to need an O2 tank with all that walking in that heat.
Shouting down the Tiger fans around us was fun too, although, I must say they were OK fans, not obnoxious or rude, a refreshing change from the Spanks & Red Suxs crowd. They were having alot of fun & had plenty to crow about the first inning. After the 6 run comeback I stood , leaned over to a group of 5 T fans, all young, heavy set guys & just cupped my hand to my ear & turned my head that way.... dead silence... :-) It was all in fun both ways. Spanks or Suxs, it may have been less pleasant....

Wow! Quite an uplifting win for the O's. I watched that awful 1st and I didn't think they had a chance. Now let's try and win one on Sunday so I get a couple of free tickets for future games. GO O"S!!!!

What a game!

How can us out- of- stater Bird fans get a copy of this DVD?

Terpfan makes a good point. Converting Loewern into a serviceable Major League hitter is not much more than a pipe dream at this point, He's a good athlete, but he has lots more work to do and it could take years. As for whether or not he was rushed, hindsight says yes... but who do you blame? A lot of professional medical people and baseball people put their best effort into this and they came up short. For all we know, Loewen is more at fault than anyone for trying to do too much too soon. Still, we all admire a strong work ethic and performers who play their way through adversity. How is Loewen supposed to know how far to push the envelope?

Juan Castro amounts to a solid trustworthy backup defensive shortstop for the balance of the year. He's another good-field, no-hit guy but hopefully puts an end to embarrassing losses like the one in Toronto where Freddie Bynum let a ground ball get through his legs to lose it. I think it's safe to say Bynum won't be back.

What a great win last night. To me, one of the keys was seeing the Orioles answer with two runs in the bottom of the first. That was huge and encouraged everyone that they could claw back into this game.

Roch - I have to ask, but who won the Anita Marks race? I wanted to be at the game last night, but there are too many cookouts and reunions this weekend. I was hoping the game was going to be replayed on MASN this morning, but it was not.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Anita won, but she also had a much shorter distance to run from the bullpen area to second base. We were impressed with her speed, however. The girl can fly. - Roch

I know everyone loves to knock Trembley's bullpen choices, but the main problem really is that the starters aren't going deep enough and the bullpen is getting burned up. They are really fortunate/smart to have been able to rotate a bunch of decent bullpen guys through the team, because if the same 7 guys has made all those appearances and pitched all those innings, half of them would be dead.

The starters need to do better, or Trembley's just stuck choosing between tired and very tired arms.

Whatever else, this is an interesting time to be a Orioles fan. First and foremost, Andy MacPhail came in with a plan for the team's future and has executed that plan flawlessly. Getting Matt Albers, Adam Jones, Dennis Sarfate, Luke Scott, George Sherrill, etc. for Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada looks like genius now.

Dave Trembley has the team playing good baseball. While I don't always agree with his in-game decisions, the managerial philosophy he brings (play smart, play hard, respect the game, etc.) harkens back to what the organization once could call with pride "the Oriole Way," and the players have embraced it.

If the O's can play inspired ball for the rest of the homestand and push back over .500, it will pose a challenge to MacPhail: To trade or not to trade. And this is because those wins will be against quality teams, again proving the O's mettle, and giving him reason to delay his rebuilding until after the season.

Of course, even then some contender may make him an offer that's difficult to refuse. I think, though, that we'll not see Brian Roberts or George Sherrill going anywhere, because if the club is to have any chance of avoiding another losing season, which I believe is now a goal, it's going to need to keep its catalyst and its closer.

Northern Oriole....EBAY!!!!! search under Oriole Magic DVD....there were already 5 listed when I checked this morning

I agree with all of you who wish for the Daniel Cabrera era in Baltimore to end. If the Orioles go out and sign AJ Burnett they get a better version of the same guy :) I'd take a slight to moderate upgrade, especially considering DCab's ceiling has already been reached. He will not get any better than this.
