Roster move

We saw it coming.

Well, I sure did. And I'm sure most of you could have predicted the same move.

The Orioles placed Alex Cintron on the disabled list today and purchased Freddie Bynum's contract from Triple-A Norfolk, where he was 6-for-15 in five games since clearing waivers and being outrighted.

Life can be so cruel. Is it just me, or did Cintron's defense seem to have improved since those Felipe Lopez rumors surfaced? And he wasn't exactly a liability with the bat, though he's not going to hit .300.

So who's your starter, Bynum or Brandon Fahey? Do you divide the starts?

To make room for Bynum on the 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred reliever Danys Baez to the 60-day disabled list.

I expected it, yeah. Cintron was really doing well. It's a shame that he hit it in that spot or he wouldn't have to leg it out as hard. Let's hope we whisper Felipe Lopez in Bynum's ears to make him play like there's no tomorrow, like Cintron did.

If Sherrill is tired, or something, I would flip Sherrill and JJ. JJ would be the closer and George would be the 8th inning man. That way, Sherrill doesn't have to be nervous or whatever when the game's on the line. Jim Johnson to me, seems like nothing bothers him, and his ERA has been fantastic. Usually, the guys with these ERA's are the closers. It also doesn't hurt that JJ has the hard fastball and sinker plus a slider.

I would let JJ close for a while to recharge Sherrill, and then let George do it again.

What do you think of this idea, Roch? And, what do you think Bynum will do in this stint?

Danys Baez? ... I'm sorry, did you say “Danys Baez?”

Is there such a thing as a 60-month disabled list?

Word out of Chicago is that the O's are talking to the white sox about Juan Uribe.

In addition, I think we need to give Quiroz some reps because right now, Ramon is not doing well with his play-calling. I don't know who's doing it but is it Ramon himself or is it both the pitcher and the catcher? I thought the pitcher had to accept the catcher's sign, right?

I would give Fahey some reps, although Bynum might get more of the reps. We need somebody to bunt and move people around, and I think both of them can do that, but I don't know who's the better bunter.

Hey, at least the line-up cranked out 5 runs. I think we should keep the line-up but take out Mora and Ramon. These guys are killing us. Put in Quiroz and find somebody else for third! Either this - or Melvin Mora better break out with a 4 hit game tonight, and Ramon with a 2 hit game.

Bynum or Fahey? No offense to either, but Trembley could pretty much flip a coin every night to see which one gets to bat ninth.

On another note, with all of the losing-on-Sundays talk, I think it's only fair to mention that the Orioles have won seven in a row on Tuesdays, and are 9-3 on Tuesdays this season.

...so they've got that going for them tonight.

This shortstop thing is starting to become a real pain in the butt. For a position that is considered one of most (if not THE most) important on the field, we can't get a break. Cintron didn't look great, but his defense was getting a little better and he showed some pop. Now it's back to "musical call-ups" on the Norfolk shuffle. I don't really see any other solution, since there's not much out there besides Lopez, and if he's as unhappy as they say, then I don't know if he'd be a welcome addition.

And I think George will be just fine. He isn't the first to suffer two in a row like this and he won't be the last. He's been outstanding up to this point. Nobody expected results like this from him.

See? Glass is always half-full...

A choice of who should start between Bynum and Fahey isn't much of one. Flip a coin? I'd start whichever one Trembley feels gives the O's the better defense, cause neither can hit their weight.
JJ "It's a shame that he hit it in that spot or he wouldn't have to leg it out as hard". How's it matter how hard he runs depending on where he's batting in the lineup? If he's not legging it out in any spot 1 - 9 he should be benched.
Go O's - and keep Sherrill as the closer (he'll be fine). If "he's tired" like some of the posters on here are assuming, then I'd agree he shouldn't be closing and he should be on the DL or something (which kind of makes me wonder if he is telling the truth or not like Walker about being hurt). Closers should be able to pitch four times a week one inning each outing. Sherrill himself has remarked that the more he pitches the better he feels and the results.

It doesn't matter who is playing shortstop, or for that matter any position, until the starting pitchers start going more than 5 innings before there pitch count reaches 100.The bullpen is maxed out already and it's just july ist.We as fans have a tendency to blame anybody and everybody for anything bad that happens to our home team. It's a very natural thing and i am as guility as the next guy. But if the truth be told it's the starting pitching that has let this team down outside of guthrie. We never and i say never get a guy to pitch into the 7th inning or for that matter pitch a occasional complete game. Thew bullpen comes into every game after 5 innings and it's just to much to ask. Then you might ask how do you get this situation to change and the answer is you can't with the current makup of this staff. Theses guys all have control problems and after 81 or 381 games that situation won't rectify itself until we have a new staff besides guthrie. Andy knows that is the problem but can''t do anything about it right now. Why do you think he trades or drafts nothing but pitchers .So yea we can blame george 1 night ramon the next or millar and mora but we all know the real problem day to day on this club is the starting pitching.

Although I had been on Trembley's case until about 10 days ago for overusing Sherrill, he was barely used last week before the Sunday and Monday night blown saves. The two home runs he gave up were the result of extremely poor pitch selection and location. I do not think Sherrill needs to be recharged, but rather someone (Kranitz, whoever's catching or Sherrill himself) needs to exercise better judgment on pitch selection when he has 0-2 and 1-2 counts on mediocre hitters. Having said that, I would give him tonight off just because I don't think it's ever a good idea to pitch him 3 days in a row.

Good to see Freddie back. At least someone will be smiling in the dugout.

All you Os fans out there think blowing a 4 run lead and losing after KC scores 5 unanswered runs in extra innings is bad should have been in Denver last night for the "Battle for the Basement" of the NL West. The Rocks had a 5 run lead after 5 innings. The Padres scored 5 runs in the top of the sixth to tie it and then scored another 7 in the top of the ninth to win going away.

As for the Os, anyone on the roster Andy MacPhail can get more value than worth for should be traded with no regrets. As it stands now, in order for the Os to compete in the AL East they need 5 more young position players and a couple of starting who can consistently go 7 innings. Otherwise they will continue to pass water into a stiff breeze.

I've given up Kool-Aid.

Oh dear God. Danys Baez. A ghost from the Season Which We Do Not Speak Of, aka last year.

Please no.

Bynum's woeful play here makes me want them to call up Luis Hernandez instead. Juan Uribe has some pop, but hasn't hit above .252 since 2004. Between the likes of him and Felipe Lopez we are really reaching.

Much as I like the Tejada deal we made, that Ervin Santana and Eric Aybar offer from the Angles last year is starting to look pretty good.

Why on earth would we try to get anyone over the age of 25 for this team? I would rather lose 100 games with all young guys and rebuild than have some older players who are short term.

Word out of Chicago should be that the Orioles just told the White Sox to shove Uribe's old a** up their Comisky.

Fahey is not a Major League player. He looks like the bat boy and weighs a buck twenty soaking wet. He's been up 3 or 4 times already, and each time has shown he cannot hit at this level. He has a decent glove, but there HAS to be someone better than him on the farm.

Put Mora at SS and Huff at 3rd.

I think Fahey and Bynum have to split starts until one of them steps up and forces Trembley to play him every day--whether that be because of offensive production or outstanding defense. To me, I'd rather have a solid defensive player than one that hits around .300 but is questionable defensively, especially with how this team plays. Well, really, I'd like to have both, but that's not happening with this cast.

Bynum or Fahey ....does it really matter?

Does it really matter? Offensively and defensively, aren't they carbon copies of each other and both are left handed hitters. Maybe Bynum gives you a little more speed but if he hits like he did when he was up before, what does it matter. The O's need to acquire a right handed hitting or switch hitting shortstop and send either Bynum or Fahey back down.

Roch--You're right, Cintron had been clicking on defense the past few games. Where we had seen no range, suddenly range appeared. And despite a few 0-fers recently, he had been swinging a decent bat.

How about getting Jack Wilson from the Buccos? He can flat out field and come through with a timely hit.

I think you have to go w/ Fahey. Bynum had his chance. Fahey gives you a better bat. Its a shame about Cintron, he was starting to look solid

Please start Fahey! Give him a chance to earn the starting spot, and if he falters, rotate him with Bynum until Cintron comes back.
It is pure O's luck that Cintron finally looked like the answer at SS and then gets hurt.

About Uribe and his 215 average and 269 OBP and how he'd fit right in with the current group and how he has played 2nd base all year. That has to be silly talk. You might as well play one of the jokesters from the current group and save the contract $$ and the stitching on a new uniform.

Hopefully Bynum will relax at the plate now that he knows he can still hit.

Crow has to put the batter's in check in the ninth and extra innings. Everyone went up there hacking last night. Patience.

that's a tough question, Roch....cause none of these guys (including Cintron) are major league caliber shortstops....oh well...GO BIRDS!

Sign Willie Miranda. Even he batted better than our current crop of SSs.

Is Ron Hansen still alive? How about Little Louie?

After reading all of the comments above I must say that I am amazed at how many people weighed in on what certainly will become a debate for the ages. One thing though jumped out at me, is Bob the father of Ben W and if so will Ben be allowed to stay up to watch the whole game tonight!!!

Pitch selection? That wasn't the problem. The Problem was hanging the pitch!

I know people here aren't big on F.Lopez but I still think he would be fine here. He was a pretty solid ML SS wbefore he went to Washington. He did have over 40 SB in '06 and 20+ HR in '05. I just think he is unhappy in Washington.

eeek. tough choice. are we even sure they aren't the same person? has anyone ever seen the two of them in the same room next to one another?

suspicious.
