Quality start
Garrett Olson became only the third starter to go six innings in the last 11 games since the break. His pitch count stood at 89 after the sixth, and manager Dave Trembley sent him back out for the seventh.
I'm sure that sparked a debate in a few households and in the stands. Leave him in and you've pushed him too far. Take him out and it makes no sense to complain about starters not pitching deep enough in games if you don't let them.
I agreed with the decision to let him start the seventh, but now it could haunt the Orioles. Chad Bradford let an inherited runner score, but he just got a clutch double play to preserve a 5-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Jamie Walker wants to be activated from the disabled list. Trembley is waiting to consult with team president Andy MacPhail.

Comments
I think it was the right move to remove Olson after he gave up the 2 singles to start the 7th.
Maybe we should consult with Bob about Walker getting activated...He and Trembley are probably thinking the same thing!

I want to see Montanez up and same with Salazar.
You have to convert a reliever and send a young pitcher down to make room for Walker. He's been a stand-up guy for a few years. He then needs to be evaluated to see if he's still ineffective. Then we move or cut him.
We're going to win on a Sunday!

Why should Olson coming out to start the 7th with a a 5-1 lead and only 89 pitches spark any kind of debate?
Should Walker, based upon his performance this year, have any say in when he comes back?
Eric - Not likely you will find any website that would list scheduled starters beforehand. Go to Orioles Hangout.com. Go to the Baysox website. Dial there phone #. They will tell you when Tillman is scheduled to pitch next, but maybe only the day of or day before his next start. He pitched Friday. Four days rest brings his turn up again Wednesday, barring any rainouts.

The Sunday streak is over!. Thanks to Olson for the first quality start in a generation. And thanks to Quiroz who missed his first chance at a bases-loaded situation but he didn't miss a thing later with three RBIs.

so how are negotiations going with brian matusz? It heard we were really close to signing him a few weeks back

Uh, Roch ...
Did Trembly just confirm the rumors of you moving to MASN in his press conference?
Posted by: Kevin on Shore | July 27, 2008 4:33 PM
A "quality" start earns him another 5 pathetic starts before anything happens with him. I would guess we have seen the last of Liz and Burress - at least I hope so. The Angels are offensive powerhouse - his start was fragile all 6 innings...but on this team I guess that is quality - how sad.

so, you're leaving the Sun? or was Trembley just kidding?
Posted by: Lauren | July 27, 2008 4:33 PM
Roch, was Trembley kidding in his postgame talk when he said you're leaving the blog to go to MASN? That's great news, if it's true. I thought he might have meant it tongue in cheek, as he was playfully fake-smoking that cigar.

The Trembley press conference today was a classic! He needs to break out the victory cigar more often. I echo his congratulations to you, Roch!

Umm, Roch, did I hear that right? You're heading to MASN? In what capacity? Can you please continue your blog on their website or something?
Congratulations, but I'm definitely sad to see you leave this forum. I hope it picks back up at MASN in some way or another.

Congrats on the MASN gig. Nice of Trembley to point that out. When will your last blog entry be?
Posted by: Bobby Floyd | July 27, 2008 4:58 PM
Roch,
Perhaps you can say something to the good folks down at MASN about getting all of their games in HD. We would appreciate it.
Congrats !

Roch:
Great move and hopefully, a few more $'s in your wallet. During your time here this blog has been both informative and fun with its many characters, and for an out of town fan, the real time feedback during the games has been great. Lots of luck in your new position and lets hope the Sunpapers doesn't screw up a good thing by replacing you with some dolt! Hopefully, the new guy can let us know where the Sidney Ponson arbitration case stands.....only kidding.

Somebody pinch me!
The Orioles won on Sunday!
Good pitching by Olson and Quiroz called a good game and supplied the timely hits. Hope this means Quiroz can be in the lineup more often.
I saw a flaw in Olson's mechanics that can be corrected. When he pushes of the rubber with his left leg, the leg stays back causing the pitch to sail to the left. He he can follow thru with the leg that would close his shoulder and the pitch will end up where he wants it to. I noticed after Kranny came out he followed thru a lot more. Now he has to get into the habit of following thru on every pitch and I am sure he will be more successful in doing so.
Payton had a bad game by striking out twice with the bases loaded. Hopefully it was just an off day at the plate for him

Gosh, the game's been over for at least an hour and nobody has mentioned that the sinister Jay Payton joined the club and tilted the brim of cap up like Sherrill's after the save. Goes to show, even Evil Jay has a good side.

Good to know we have a pitching coach who doubles as a Blogger? Good thing because the guys paid millions of dollars to know that stuff can probably use the advice.
