Leading 8-1 in the fifth

Jeremy Guthrie has thrown 73 pitches in four innings. I don't think he's going the distance.

Vicente Padilla is a 10-game winner? Sure didn't look like it today. In 2 2/3 innings, he allowed eight runs and nine hits, walked two batters and struck out none. He threw 74 pitches, 47 for strikes.

Before the game, manager Dave Trembley indicated that he might bat Adam Jones second against certain left-handers during the second half of the season. But he's not inclined to make any drastic changes with Jones swinging so well near the bottom of the order.

You know, if it ain't broke...

Another RBI for Aubrey Huff today. That's 53 and counting.

Two doubles and an RBI for Brandon Fahey today. Adam Jones scored standing up on the first double because Freddie Bynum had his arms raised, telling Jones not to slide. Bynum didn't realize the play was going to be so close.

The ball arrived at the same time as Jones, who motored past catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, oblivious that he was almost tagged out until after his foot came down on the plate. Jones turned his head and looked back at Saltalamacchia.

And I only tell this story because I love to type the name Saltalamacchia - over and over.

Kevin Millar has twice gone to 3-2 counts in two at-bats and produced a walk and RBI single. He walked on the 13th pitch of the first at-bat.

Roch only reason Padilla has 10 wins is his run support (going into the game he led it with the Rangers scoring 6 and a half runs a game). So did we trade Lance Cormier? Is he injured or something? Granted he pitched 4 innings Sunday and 40 pitches, but figured he'd been in last night and in this one before Bukvitch.

Oops scratch my last post. Just noticed Cormier pitched to scoreless innings last night (missed that game). We have to have to have someone better in the minors better than Bukvitch. Geesh

bukvich can now leave the building

For all the talk of the bullpen - it's pretty bad other than the back end? Roch - who and where did they come up with this guy Buckvich...he's done! There's no way this guy belongs on a major league roster, let alone one who has a .500+ record.

This guy Bukvich needs to be gone. Suddenly the bullpen looks pretty shaky.

is guthrie better than bukvich?

is a tired guthrie better than bukvich?

i'm starting to think Trembley is getting dumber by the day

You know, I kinda enjoyed the feeling earlier this year that a seven run lead was safe.

Getting '07 flashbacks here and not enjoying them at all.

So with that logic: Trembley would be more inclined to move Jones up if he was hitting badly.

Thats dumb. But I do not get paid to make those choices. I will just continue to bat him second in my Baseball video game. Ahead of Markakis and Teixeira.

Yeah, I think Adam deserves a shot at batting higher in the order. Stick Millar & Mora in the bottom 3rd.

A triple off the scoreboard last night and a double sliced down the left field line today--way to go Brandon Fahey!

Adam Jones is showing a lot of development, knocking base hits the opposite way. And man he makes all of us so happy in center. What a wonderful player out there.

Way to go Freddie Bynum, lining the ball through the middle off Padilla and moving on to a 3-RBI game.

Nice win for the Orioles, who with today's win and the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox, are now in third place in the AL East.

available: slightly suspect middle reliever. has been here. done that.
rick bauer DFA'd by the tribe today. too bad he pitched his best at AAA buffalo this year. no chance for a redux in baltimore, i'm guessing.
and i don't guess OPACY has a "bring your glove to the ballpark... we may need you in the 7th..." event on schedule....

meh. i'm happy with this team. we could be the tribe and have 25 guys who can play SS and still not win. we have 1 1/2 and we ARE winning.... see? silver linings all over the place!

Roch,

Ever here of copy and paste. You only need to type Saltalamacchia once and then you can paste it again and again and again. Saltalamacchia Saltalamacchia Saltalamacchia

we need a short stop ... janks need relief ... buckvitch for arod?

we need a short stop ... janks need relief ... buckvitch for arod?

happy birthday Peter Angelos!...count your blessings people, we could have hammerin' hank steinbrenner running the team.

To all the supposed experts who thought the 2008 Orioles could be "historically bad" - we now have more wins than the 2003 Tigers had. It's nice to be ahead of the Yankees, too.

How about our leadoff hitter today? After blistering the ball at a one for five clip today he has raised his average for the year all the way to .192.

Looking at what Rick Bauer has done since he left here, I would give him another shot. I was disappointed when we let him get away and he'd be better than Bukvich. I can understand bringing up Bukvich to see what he's got, but I think we've seen enough. My prediction is we will see him one more time, and then be DFA'd, to make room for Beird (or maybe Bauer?)....

Batting Jones second makes no sense at all. The guy has 16 walks in 300 at bats this year, and a .316 OBP. That is not an ideal #2 hitter. That's is a #6 or #7 hitter.

I like having Adam Jones batting later in the lineup. In fact I prefer having hitters scattered throughout the batting order. Maybe it means one less bat per game but it's more important to make sure there are no "dead spots" in a lineup.

Hey Roch,

I find it curious that your all star poll had 5 O's on it and one of them was not Markakis? The guy is having a good year offensively (8th in the AL in OBS by the way) and has been outstanding defensively. Hope he doesn't become a guy being taken for granted - he is quietly having a solid season. Maybe not an all star - but he is the one guy teams pitch around, yet still has 12 homers and 22 doubles halfway through.

I would release Buvhich... hell, I can't even spell his name right. I would release him and call up Bierd when he comes back from the DL.

We need relievers like Jim Johnson who can throw strikes and have control along with it, and get people out. Efficient would be the word I'm looking for.

Great win today! Let's continue it for the next two games, and let's solidify our position in 3rd place.

Can somebody please tell me what Greg Aquino did to tick off O's management? All he's done is pitch to a 2.25 era since he's been in Norfolk and had one bad outing here after the Genius,Dave Trembley hadn't used him in 14 days.Any reason Bukvich is still on this team? He's horrible.

Roch, Tell me I was seeing things...twice. I was watching MLB video and saw Matt Albers high fiving in the dugout, when yesterday I thought I read that he's in Sarasota's, spring training complex. Maybe he will be going there. I'm not sure now.

Also, how about Mahay from the Royals? I just read on ESPN that teams are looking at him to strengthen their bullpens before the trading deadline. And, as we know, he has a great ERA and can provide that lefty presence out of the bullpen.

Does anybody think this could be a good pick-up?

Roch, just ahppened to notice Jim Johnson was born in Johnson City , N.Y.

What is the Mayor's name? Reminds a guy of that old routine with Ray J. Johnson.."you can call me Ray or you can call me Jay or you can call me Johnny , or..."

I guess when they go the bathroom , nobody refers to it as their Johnson.Or, maybe that's why they call it..

I'll stop now.

All season the media tells you your team has no chance. Than you realize...you are not that bad. Than some young guys decide....we are not going to be pushed around. And the fans won't be either.

Guess what Baltimore...your team is in the hunt. You may not see it, but its there. I saw it tonight in section 86. The Magic is real. Get 2 more against Texas, 2 out of 3 vs Toronto, and 2 of 3 vs Boston, and we are in the race!

MAGIC!!!!

all of you people who are clammoring for bucvich to be gone, and throwing around names of potential replacements (Bauer would be ridiculous addition at this point) the answer is obviouse and on the way.... Randor Beard has likely completed his rehab, meaning he must be braught up soon (rule 5-remember).
can anyone tell me what the Angels may have a need for come the nearing of the trade deadline. it seems that for some bizzarre reason, they have proclaimed Aybar to be the absolute future shortstop, yet clearly Brandon Wood is the better hitter, and has a very adquate glove, and with Figgons @ 3rd, Wood seems expendable in any trade they may deem necessary for veteren help. why not try and get this guy and move him back to SS (from 3rd). hes they type of young player you go after if your rebuilding and have a huge hole. i hear they could use a right handed bat (Millar?) and a reliever (bradford?). maybe a catcher (ramon).
i like Dallas Mcpherson, but w/ Mora entrenched and w/ a no trade, we have no where to play the guy unless he can magically convert to SS.
wishful thinking but i still say any up for Kalil Greene.... to bad the Pads have no minor league depth @ SS either, and are highly unlikely to part w/ that guy even if they become sellers...

Would you walk Jones with Hernandez, Fahey, Cintron or Bynum batting behind him? And Mora was the #2 hitter most of the year and his OB% is BELOW .300. Also Jones OB% keeps going up. For June it was .349 and July its over .400 so far.

Anyway this is the same guy who hit Corey Patterson 2nd last year for a few months.

hey Jack, the leadoff hitter had 3 rbis and played a flawless shortstop, so get off his back. don't be a hater.

I don't understand why the O's web site keeps promoting Roberts for the All-Star Game. He's a good player, but Huff and Markakis are more deserving. Markakis has virtually the same numbers except twice as many homers and ten more RBI's. Huff's average is not that much lower and he has the best power numbers by far. With one of the best starts of his career, my vote is for Huff. He, Sherrill and the best relief pitcher in baseball--Jim Johnson--all should be going to NY. Sadly, Johnson and probably Huff will be overlooked.

Don't we have anyone better than Bukvich available from our minors? He seems to be somewhat nervous, which is understandable, but he also prefers to nibble around the plate rather than challenge the hitters. He has been given an opportunity to be an innings eater, but the innings are eating him instead. Perhaps learning to throw a sinking fastball for strikes and/or a nasty, sinking curveball would improve his repertoire, but that skill should be mastered in the minors, not up here. At the moment, he doesn't appear to be overmatching the batters. Maybe some of that fault could be attributed to the pitch selection of the Catcher, but his best stuff doesn't appear to be sufficient to go an inning or two without giving up walks, hits, and runs. Either go after the batters right now and take your chances, or head back to the minors and learn how to dominate a couple of innings.
Obviously, management saw something in his pitching makeup or he wouldn't have been promoted, We would like to see that potential on display, too. Throw strikes, low strikes, to put the ball in play. Otherwise, head back to the minors to work on becoming more effective as a relief pitcher.

Jones batting second sounds good to me; he will get even better pitches hitting between Roberts and Markakis.

Yesterday at Bowie Tillman went only 1 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run, 3 BB. Anyone know why he was pulled so early in the game ( hopefully not an injury)?

BC Mike - "But you doesn't have to call me Mr. Johnson."

Mahay looked unhittable when the Royals were in town. His numbers are great, but he would come at a steep price. There are several teams interested in him and I believe he is signed thru 2009. Next few weeks will determine whether the O's are major sellers or are looking, as crazy as it may sound, to be in the hunt this year.

As Dave mentioned the advantage of hitting Jones 2nd is that he sees more fastballs. Also, it gets Markakis in the three spot where he belongs. Right now I would prefer to see him batting sixth, but not sure how that fits with our lineup. Melvin under .230 and continuing on a downward spiral is a dilemna. How long will it take before Aubrey is playing third 3-4 times a week?

Any reason that Tillman could not get through two innings last night?

When do we get to see Arieta move up. Went 5 innings last night with 10 K's? Oh, maybe the 5 BB might be the reason......

Yeah, lets abandon our rebuilding effort and trade some to bring in some rental players. We are 3 over five hundred! Do not worry about the fact that we can not beat the Sox or the Rays and are 10 games out of first. We are not playing above our heads. Who cares that we only have maybe 5 true everyday players in our batting line-up. Huff has been hot for a few weeks now. Time to offer a 6 year extension.
Oh, can someone look up sarcasm for me in the dictionary.

Tillman sat through two rain delays amounting to 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Winston - I am not hating on Freddie. I hope he relaxes and plays well when he gets his chances this time around. Yes, he certainly made his one hit count - good situational hitting. Though that third RBI came on what should have been a DP ball. It's more of a comment on our lack of anyone truly suitable to hit leadoff when Roberts is out of the game.

Bynum can't be what he's not, and the fact that he handled himself as well as he did is a good sign for the team. If we had either Bynum OR Fahey as our utility infielder/emergency outfielder/pinch runner that wouldn't be bad. It's difficult to see the team contending all the way through the end of the season when the manager is waiting for SOMEBODY to step up and claim the SS position - and then stay healthy.

Tillman sat through two rain delays amounting to 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Jack...agreed.
