Final post
Brady Anderson stood at his locker before an Orioles game many years ago, checked out my new haircut – buzzed on the sides, much shorter on the top than how I had previously worn it – and said, “Dude, you need a little gel on that moss.”
I once approached Scott Erickson and asked if he had a few seconds, and he replied: “Not for you.”
You can’t put a price on memories like that.
I’ve been in a reflective mood lately, and with good reason. I’m leaving The Sun -- taking a voluntary buyout -- after 21 years (I started my internship in pre-school). The timing just seemed right. The business is changing, I’m changing. . .
Well, I’m not changing THAT much. But everyone needs to re-invent themselves at least once in a lifetime. And Adam Loewen already stole my idea of becoming a position player.
I’m not leaving the area. I’m just leaving a paper that rescued me from unemployment one year out of college and threw me into the preps pit.
I managed to fight my way out of it and climb all the way to the Orioles beat – along the way working with some remarkable people. And I’m talking friends as well as reporters: Peter Schmuck, Ken Rosenthal, John Eisenberg, Joe Strauss, Joe Christensen, Jeff Zrebiec, Dan Connolly, just to name a few. I learned a lot from them, though not as much as I did from Brady (but I’m all about the hair!).
I’m a better writer and reporter because of them. Most important, I’d like to think I’m a better person. They’d line up to dispute that fact, but I’m running with it anyway.
Thank you, Andy Ratner, for hiring me as a sports clerk for the Anne Arundel County bureau in Pasadena. Thank you, Chris Kaltenbach, for always using a delicate touch when editing my raw copy back in those days – and for not talking too much about death, because you know how that freaks me out. Thank you, Jack Gibbons and Molly Dunham, for putting me on the Orioles beat full-time in 1997 and trusting me to not screw up. Thank you, Randy Harvey, for giving me Roch Around the Clock – after defining the word “blog” for me and explaining that, no, it wasn’t something that required a prescription ointment.
I’ve been blessed by my friendships with the “competition,” guys like David Ginsburg, Dave Sheinin (brilliant writer, brilliant musician), Jorge Arangure, Marc Carig, Kevin Seifert, Mark Zuckerman, Gary Washburn, Spencer Fordin . . . the list could go on and on, but I’d rather exclude a few people and have them wonder if it was intentional.
They haven’t seen the last of me. I’m not moving to Vermont and making my own maple syrup. I’m just won’t be working at The Sun anymore. But I’ll still be reading it every day – and I mean the print version, too. Some people still like to get ink on their fingers. And I’ll always been grateful to all of you for making my blog so darned popular that I can’t cross the street without someone yelling out my name.
And for a change, they’re not trying to serve me papers.
We’ll talk again soon. In the meantime, thanks for the memories. And for whatever hair gel you can send my way.
-- Roch Kubatko

Roch,
I know I haven't commented much, but I haven't missed a post here since day 1 and I've loved every minute of it. Thanks so much for the updates on our favorite team, and the humor to make it more fun these past few trying seasons. I wish you the best, and look forward to reading your next endevor.

congrats and good luck with everything. Your blog has helped me get through the last 10 years of Orioles non-magic. Hopefully the O's are ready to turn the corner, as are you.
Let us know where you wind up, and def. start your own blog when you get settled.
Also, here's to a sweep at Yankee Stadium, 1st since 1986.

Roch --
Thanks for the hard work and the quick jokes you made and will make. You can’t put a price on memories like that. Where are you going to work now?
I hope you will be around to give us a guest blog once in a while to just refresh us of your haircut and the humor. I'm sure everybody will say this, but I will miss you for this blog. Good luck!

I haven't been much for posting comments, but I read this space everyday. It really just hit me when I saw the title "Final Post" how sad I feel to see it go even if this isn't really the "end". Roch, your posts made for entertaining and informative reads while helping me to decompress throughout the work day. As an out of towner following the Birds, you helped me stay connected to the team I grew up with. Best of luck with your future endeavors and know that you will be missed.

Roch, I just want to say thank you for the blogging and even the articles. It is my dream to be a sports journalist, as it is what I am in school for, and you have provided a fresh perspective of the business. Everybody who gets into this business has a writer who they looked to for inspiration, a writer they remember long into their careers. For me, that person is you, and if I am lucky enough to make it into this field, my first article will be a tribute to Roch Kubatko. Thank you for everything, and let us know where you end up.

Hey Roch,
Good luck. Your blog was always my first stop to find out how the Orioles did the day before...the score doesn't mean as much as the quotes from players/managers that you included. Your 'Dennis Milleresk' references will be missed as well as your funny one-liners...forget the gel, dye your hair bright orange and you can be "Oriole Top" out on the stand-up circuit
Besides my kids prefer flavored corn syrup anyway.

For years now I have felt at home when at O's games because I look over to the pressox and hear people hollering up to you. I've always been on the lookout for a 97 Cavalier. You made the Orioles beat fun - and seen through the eyes of a professional and a Baltimorean. Thanks, Roch.

Bummer that you're leaving; posting occasionally on this site felt like participating in something special.
Really admire your even handedness and enjoy your humorous observations, Roch. I remember you posting about your teenage girl leaving an extensive collection of shampoo and conditioner bottles in the shower -- and laugh now when I stumble over my own daughter's menagerie.
It was also interesting watching you decide how to handle G. of E. I bet some of those postyings made you shake your head!!!
Best of wishes to you.

Your spring training reports with the lineups were always great, and your off-season post were always informative as well. I'm sure you will be around in the area so I can still give an old shout out. I've been reading since 05 and I thought it was cool that you were having a blog since you were always funny on the morning show on 98 Rock, and this blog was the best thing on the sun. I notice that there a several people with roots to Baltimore and the Orioles who follow them from afar through your postings. You cared and it showed, and that made it the perfect meeting place to stay in touch with a touchstone of our past. I think you were not just a reporter but also a fan, and though that may not be perfect for journalistic credentials, it was perfect as the moderator of the meeting ground for Oriole followers.
Your comments were always incisive, and your humor was always entertaining. It was always a pleasure, and perhaps kept me more involved in a losing cause than I might otherwise have been. Your departure may make it easier to let go of the frustration of the attachment to an exercise in futility.
Your work was well appreciated and I wish you well in all that your new present holds out to you.
Thank you.
Be Well

Roch,
Again many thanks for the great insight, stories, quips, and more importantly feeding us our daily dose of O's tidbits. Through the many losing seasons and pent up frustration over the direction of the team, one thing remained constant, and provided us our salvation: Roch Around The Clock! From an old Severna Park who is now transplanted in Texas, thanks for being there for us!! God bless you, and nothing but the best wishes for you. As I felt with the passing of Chuck Thompson, tonight, the beer just isn't quite as cold as it's been in the past. I'm out!!!

Roch, thank you for giving me something to read at work! You've always known when to inject a little humor in an otherwise sad O's season (the past 10 of them, to be exact). True Orioles fans will know where to find you next (I'm talking about where you'll be working - not your house - don't worry!)

thanks, Roch! I'd go off and on reading the daily Orioles columns, but I always checked out your blog. Something about the quick, no-nonsense info, conversational tone, and fan dialogue always kept me coming back. Your insight was always appreciated too. All in all, definitely the best part of the Sun's sports section (at least in my opinion).
Thanks, best of luck, and hope you stick with the sports trade, and in particular...a blog, somewhere, somehow!

I am eagerly looking forward to your MASN blog on Friday - it lifted my spirits to find out that you would still be blogging about the Os (even as the os got pummelled by the Yankees). OMG! The TV announcer has ESP - just after I wrote pummelled, he said "the Os got pummelled" - my wife often says I should be a baseball sports caster because I beat the announcers to their analysis by saying things out loud before they do. Anyway, good luck working for Pete!

It was always a pleasure to read what you had to say, and perhaps kept me more involved in a losing cause than I might otherwise have been. Your departure may make it easier to let go of the frustration of the attachment to an exercise in futility.
Your work was well appreciated and I wish you well in all that your new present holds out to you.
Thank you.
Be Well
Joe

Roch,
Roch around the Clock became a big part of my daily routine. Checking several times a day (and night) for a new post, cursing you when there wasn't one, I am responsible for more than a few of those "hits" since this thing started. I have always enjoyed your light hearted approach, It's a game after all, and the fact you were never afraid to make a corny joke or poke fun at yourself. I have truly enjoyed it and wonder what I will do with all the free time now that the Clock has stopped.
Thanks and Good Luck

Thanks, Roch, for the insightful and humorous coverage of Orioles baseball. I've enjoyed it! Being from Ohio, the blog has provided plenty of details I otherwise wouldn't get. Maybe you could reinvent yourself into a Cy Young caliber pitcher...
Anyway, best to you in your new endeavor. Go O's!!

It's been a blast Roch! Thanks for letting me and the other Oriole girls stalk you at Spring Training a few years ago when this was just a baby blog, and for still having a few minutes to chat when we stopped by the press box.
As much as I am going to miss the blog, I am very excited for you. Your talent and personality have really helped make a name for yourself among O's fans and the rest of the media. I am positive that there are bigger and better things in store for you... which is great, because it means there's even more Roch in store for the fans, too.
Good luck and hope to see you around soon!

Thanks Roch for an informative and often funny blog. My coworkers (all non-Orioles fans) will now have more time to get their work done as they won't have to politely smile while I recount to them peices of humor that I have read in your blog.

For years and years, I always craved Orioles news in a timelier and more abundant fashion than traditional newspapers could publish it. Then your blog came along, and it was exactly what I felt I had been missing.
Thanks for all your work, and all the best to you in your future endeavors.
