Celebrating the '83 season

Still no word on Adam Loewen’s CT scan, and I’ve stopped holding my breath. My face was beginning to turn purple, which is fine if you’re attending a Ravens game. Not so much if you’re working at your laptop.

The Orioles are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1983 world championship on Wednesday, July 23, with more than 20 players and coaches from that team returning to Baltimore to take part in festivities.

The list, though subject to change, includes Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray, Al Bumbry, Mike Flanagan, Jim Palmer, Dennis Martinez, Tippy Martinez, Rick Dempsey, Scott McGregor, Gary Roenicke, John Shelby, Ken Singleton, Mike Boddicker, Benny Ayala, Todd Cruz, Jim Dwyer, Dan Ford, Glenn Gulliver, Tito Landrum, John Stefero, Bill Swaggerty, Dan Morogiello, former general manager Hank Peters and coach Jimmy Williams.

All upper deck seats will be discounted to $5.50, matching the Memorial Stadium prices. Maybe the Orioles can make the toilets overflow, too, and park all the cars in long lines so fans get boxed in afterward and have to wait.

I loved Memorial Stadium, but it wasn’t all about comfort and convenience.

The ballpark seating bowl will open at 5:30 p.m., 30 minutes after Eutaw St. opens. Members of the ’83 team will greet fans at the entry gates until 6 p.m. The first 25,000 fans will receive a 25th anniversary pennant, and 500 of the pennants will be autographed by a member of the ‘83 team.

As if that isn’t enough, ’83 team members will participate in a press conference in the bullpen picnic area at 6 p.m., which is open to all fans, and will take part in pre-game ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Walk around the lower concourse once the game begins and you might get an autograph. Fans also will have the chance to pose for photos with the World Series trophy, though you can’t drink out of it like the Stanley Cup.

Believe me, I’ve tried.

Also, current Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays players and coaches will wear jerseys from the ’83 season – as long as the hats aren’t blue, we’re cool – and after the game, Orioles jerseys from that year and this season will be auctioned online at www.orioles.com. Proceeds will benefit Shannon’s Fund, which you read about yesterday in this blog.

Roch,
The next call-up is going to have to be someone on that Bowie rotation right?
I mean, D-Cab came straight from Bowie if I remember correctly.
Also, don't most teams now have their better young prospects skip AAA?
Ryan

I guess Brother Lo is still pissed off by the way he was dumped. With only Rhino here, we'll be missing half a player. Couldn't Altobelli get a night off from Red Wings broadcasts to come back?

Dan Morogiello? Talk about making the most of a cup of coffee. This from Wikipedia (I was away in college in 1983, so I had forgotten such minutiae)--

After being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1976, he spent several years in the Minor League system before making his Major League debut with the Baltimore Orioles on May 20, 1983 against the Toronto Blue Jays. In his one year in Major League baseball Dan compiled a 0-1 record, with 37.2 innings in 22 appearances with a stellar 2.39 Earned Run Average for the World Series champions. His final Major League game was September 22, 1983.

I remember that series as once again, as in 1979, we were burning logging slash on the coast of British Columbia. After the 1979 debacle (where the fire got away on us during the Pirates series) we never lit up until after the 3rd game of the World Series. Not very scientific , but it worked. No more escapes.

That was a pretty good Phillies team and they were dispatched without a great deal of fuss, or at least ,that is what I remember.

Roch, on one of these off days, perhaps you can reproduce some of the more accurate predictions and declarations from this years blog responses . I , for one , am willing to eat my 71-91 prediction with great zeal if and when it is no longer relevant.

Just tell me what MacPhail is doing for the call-ups, and I'll be set for this week. And the next. Consider it a birthday gift.

Too bad Brooks Robinson isn't there. I would have liked to see him in a capacity. Heck, even sit in the crowd with the fans or something.

Good thing MacPhail predicted what would happen. We've lost almost half of our pitching, and his mantra is "More pitching, pitching, and pitching." So, let's see the next line of pitchers come into the stadium.

Let's sweep Toronto and move onto the next team, and get on a rampage, defeating everything in our path!

With Toronto coming to town, I am interested in the Star's comments that A.J. Burnett is being shopped around. Do you think the Orioles have any interest in him?

Too bad Lenn Sakata couldn't make it. Last I heard he was in Japan as a coach. Lenn was the manager for the Waikiki Beach Boys two seasons ago in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League in his home state.

Alan: Burnett is a lock to the Cubs and Bedard to the Phils. As for us, we've made it very clear we're signing free agent bats not arms so we have no interest in AJ.

Is there any concern among O's management at the number of guys who are blowing out their arms in their organization? Let's see: Ray, Baez and now probably Loewen. He's probably torn his ulnar collateral ligament. And if he hasn't all, all that is going to be prescribed is rest -- and then he'll come back with the exact same pitching motion that is causing him problems. I know Bedard is not with them anymore, but he's basically a walking MASH unit who's already had the surgery. So I could count him too. Same with Rodrigo Lopez.

I'll give them a pass on Albers and Patton, but only technically because they came from Houston. Same with Benson -- he was damaged goods before he got here.

Wow -- Dan Morogiello! The only thing thicker than his bushy mustache was the wad in his cheek.

Burnett is one of JP's 'key' moves and one that should led to his dismissal sooner than later. 11 mill per yr to a guy that is less than a .500 pitcher and with an attitude to boot?--no thanks!
I remember Eddie's 2 dingers in Game 5 like it was yesterday but was expecting much more since then. Pretty bad when we are all excited about a possible .500 season and maybe contending in a couple of years...Personally, I'd rather see us 10 games under right now if I saw some positive signs with the starters and overall team make-up.
Our starting rotation is in shambles. We have a middle reliever- Burres, wildmen like Liz/Cabrera, ?-Olsen and Guthrie, who is likely a 2 or 3 starter anywhere else.
The only 3 position players with any upside are Markakis, Jones and Roberts(and there's some merit is trading him). Huff is rebounding and Scott has some value but beyond that, most of our guys are bench players and more importantly, on the wrong side of 30.
The 'pen was actually a bright spot until hit with a rash of injuries and overwork and we really don't know who's going down next. I think the 'pen should be serviceable in '08 but overall, I can't get to thrilled about the 'rebuild'. Looks like we have far too many holes to fill before we can even think about contending and the sad reality is that we may only have the 30 year celebration of the '83 O's to look forward to.
