Trembley's anniversary
Today is the one-year anniversary of Dave Trembley’s promotion from bullpen coach to manager. I wonder how many readers of this blog, back on June 18, 2007, believed he was the right man for the job.
His “minor league methods” weren’t guaranteed to be a proper fit in a major league clubhouse. Not all veterans are quick to embrace infield practice and pitchers fielding practice and other fundamental-based drills often stashed away after spring training - especially when they come from back-slapping managers with corny motivational slogans and constant reminders about the importance of “respecting the game” and “playing the game the right way” and “being proud to wear the uniform.”
How many of these guys knew anything about the “Oriole Way?” How many of them figured to roll their eyes each time the phrase was uttered again?
And yet, you see the results so far. The players here are attacking everything that Trembley’s trying to do, everything he believes in, with gusto.
They respect him as a manager. They’re convinced that, if they lose, it won’t be for lack of preparation or because he’s overmatched in the dugout. One year into his tenure, he hasn’t lost the clubhouse. And there were plenty of people in town who thought he would.
It’s no accident that the Orioles are 16-10 in one-run games, that they’ve won 16 times after rallying from deficits of two runs or more, that they’re come from behind in 20 of their wins, that they’ve won five games when trailing after the seventh inning.
The trick now is to keep it going, and then figure out what to do at the non-waiver trade deadline at the end of July. Team president Andy MacPhail doesn’t want to lose sight of the bigger picture. There’s still a rebuilding plan in place. But as long as the club hovers around .500 and remains this competitive every night…well, you get the picture.
Down on the farm, Single-A Frederick’s Brandon Erbe is trying to make us forget again that he’s only 20.
Erbe tossed seven shutout innings last night, allowing only one hit and striking out 12. His dominating performance came six days after he no-hit the same team, Wilmington, over seven innings. He’s struck out 21 in his last two starts.
Frederick’s Brandon Tripp went 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBI's.
At Double-A Bowie, Chorye Spoone had his second rough outing in a row since returning from a shoulder injury that cost him more than a month of the season. He lasted only three innings, allowing three runs and four hits, and walking four.
Baysox pitching coach Mike Griffin noted how Spoone didn’t have his good stuff. “Good curveball and good changeup, but his fastball command was a little off,” Griffin said. “His mechanics were off at times. He’s got to get his feet back on the ground right now. I saw signs of it tonight. I saw progress with the changeup, and with the curveball, no question. Just the fastball command tonight was a little off, and when your fastball command is off, it can offset your other pitches. But it just wasn't Chorye's night tonight."
Chris Tillman (7-1, 2.78 ERA) makes tonight’s start for the Baysox, and it’s “Chocolate Fest,” featuring make-your-own sundaes, concessions dipped in chocolate and chocolate-themed activities.
At my house, we call that Saturday night. All that's missing is a container of Cool Whip, page 12 of the Victoria's Secret catalog and jumper cables.

I wrote a long poem to Trembley last night about how he reminds me of a mystic Ice Warrior and he is leading the legions into battle astride his mighty Saber Cat. Anyone know how I can get this posted on the Oriole website?
Also, I will send copies to any of my fellow Oriole Soldiers for free. Its frameable!!!

Jumper cables....wow!
Roch, any word on if Adam Loewen is scheduled to toss an inning tonight at Bowie? I know he was suppose to be heading there this week, but I haven't seen anything about it lately so I'm curious. I wanted to go check him out...and I REALLY would love for that to coincide with "Chocolate Fest"!
Yay to Dave! I'll be honest, at first I couldn't see past my annoyance with the "Cubs Connection" and I was in the group clamoring to bring back Davey Johnson. However, I'm REALLY glad that Andy knew Dave better than I did...as I couldn't imagine anyone else that would have been able to help get the attitude of the players and the fans turned around as quickly as Trembley has.

While i love the informative nature of your blog, you can sometimes give TOO MUCH INFORMATION

Roch--Sounds like Saturday night features tributes to Coco Crisp, Coco Laboy, and Pie Traynor.

Trembly appears to havr the players support.I have lobbied for a different
hitting coach but others say the current one has the players support. Using the same rationale then one would conclude Trembly is doing a good job . Second guessing pitching moves etc is part of the game. When Hargrove was the Indians coach everyone second guessed his pitching moves but the Indians wre very successful under him.

Roch, those last two lines had me laughing out loud at work. I've never seen you so open about your sex life.

I read from numerous sources that this was the year the NL was going to dominate in interleague play. Last night's tally shows that the AL was 12-2 against the NL. What is the record to date in 2008?

"At my house, we call that Saturday night. All that's missing is a container of Cool Whip, page 12 of the Victoria's Secret catalog and jumper cables."
...awkward...
I was very vocal about saying that Sammy P didn't get a fair shake, because he didn't have the pieces to do anything but lose miserably. I thought that going to Dave Trembley was just another temporary move for a guy who who would fail at rearranging the deckchairs on a sinking ship.
I am very pleased to say I was wrong. I really like DT, and believe that he can help bring this ballclub back in the right direction. I hope he gets extended, so that he can see the fruits of his labor.
o, as in "how 'bout dem O's?"

Hey Roch,
According to a quote in the Houston Chronicle, it sounds like a certain reliever was still in a foul mood despite a shower and throwing his locker on top of his car after the game:
... "I don't have a (expletive) thing to say," Brocail screamed when approached by the media afterward. ...

Happy anniversary Trembley! Thanks for the candor & the straightforward approach. Why wouldn't the players try his methods? Obviously the ones they were using weren't working....
He probably hasn't lost the clubhouse because some of the cancers there have been cut out.
Roch, I hope he reads today for ole times sake...
If the players NEED fundamental drills , infield practice... do it! Vets or rooks so what? You play like you practice I was once told, I never forgot that one.
Trembley had my vote when he mentioned "respecting the game" & "playing the game the right way". That is something many players on many levels don't understand or do. I see it in my leagues I play in now & it drives me crazy. That & not hustling. I instantly dislike & don't respect guys that fail to abide by those axioms. I say if you want to goof off , be a poor teammate , play for yourself, or just be an idiot, go home & play baseball on your video game....
On Bedard going only five or six innings and 100 pitches of late, Bavasi says a lot of pitchers can have days where 90 pitches feel like 200. On why Bedard can't go longer, Bavasi says it's a good question, but one that has to be put to Bedard.
"He'll have a stupid answer for you, you can count on it,'' Bavasi said. "He'll have some dumbass answer.''
I think the guy laughing was MacPhail.... it sounds like Bavasi is saying that Bedard is dogging it , protecting his arm , for the big payday coming via FA. Hell, I thought he was doing that last year....
Jumper cables????

I hope your not alone on those Saturday nights Roch, I mean your wife's there too right? :)

It is early but once again it appears that the AL wildcard team will come from the AL east. Most pundits said it would be different this year. Seattle and Angels so strong in the west and three teams from the central could easily make the wild card. What goes?
Continuing to ponder, how do you explain the O's in fourth place in HR's? Ahead of the mighty ARod led Yankees and the best hitting machine of all time, the 2008 Tigers. That is why baseball is the greatest of all games. It is a cliche but so true, the game is played on the field, not on paper.
Posted by: UpWithCowboys | June 18, 2008 11:15 AM
Has anyone noticed how Trembley bears a striking resemblance to William Shatner?
That said, I think the "fundamentals" are working. I am enjoying every game win or lose. it is a pleasure to see the players having fun, something we haven't seen since the early 80's. Thats perhaps the most magical part of the season.
Posted by: spybry | June 18, 2008 11:18 AM
Jumper cables? You are a sick man. Maybe you and Spoone should both work on your mechanics.
Brian--I'm hearing scuttlebutt that some folks in the warehouse/law firm think MacPhail is getting too much credit for the good things happening on and off the field.
Looks like Nicky & co. can't leave well enough alone. Better watch out, those guys could screw up corn flakes.

Stay Classy Roch!

I don't want to sound too harsh or critical but this is overboard Roch:
"It’s no accident that the Orioles are 16-10 in one-run games, that they’ve won 16 times after rallying from deficits of two runs or more, that they’re come from behind in 20 of their wins, that they’ve won five games when trailing after the seventh inning."
One run games are an indication of luck mostly, are the Braves a badly coached team? I don't think they have won a 1 run game on the road yet this year.
As for the come back wins, a lot of that has to do with the fact that the O's bullpen has been really soild all year and the starting rotation rather less solid. If the starters are getting the job done the O's wouldn't be behind so often.
I like Trembley overall, however I do wish two things 1- He look at past history in pitcher/batter matchups a bit more 2- He stop giving up outs with sac bunts.

That sounds so much like the over-achieving Mariners team of last year. They had a great record in 1 run games (a Real SeamHead (TM) could quote the numbers, sorry) and thought they were one dominant pitcher away from contending. And we all know how that turned out! Look on the Seattle Times website to see how they are feeling about Eric in Seattle. I am apologizing to my co-workers (all mariner fans, natch) for guaranteeing this trade would help both teams.
I was only half right, but it was the righ half :)
Anyway fellow O's fans the take-away here is don't lose perspective on the O's relative strength. There are a lot of funny bounces in baseball, a good deal of Randomness as in other spheres of human endeavor, and the tendency of humans is to infer patterns based on a small sample size. We probably aren't as close as we seem, is what I'm saying. Fortunately I am sure our GM has this in the proper perspective. I think we have to go back to Hank Peters, the last time I could say that...

Trembley, MacPhail, and Joe Jordan have this franchise headed in the right direction. The manager's passion is obvious and I'm sure it plays a role in how this team seems to never give up.
MacPhail's intelligence and experience in building a club seems invaluable. We'll have more insight on that as the July trade deadline approaches.
Jordan was confident that he could sign Avery and Hoes, and now has done that. If a Matusz signing means we have the top seven under wraps, as one poster suggested, this draft could be better than expected.

Congratulations to Dave Trembley. So far, so good...
Roch, are you going to be appearing on the Bubba the Love Sponge show? We already know too much about Aubrey Huff.

I have no problem with Roch looking at Victoria's secret.... however, dude, tell me you don't have a subscription to it!
Maybe you could try Cinemax in place of Vickies? They don't call it Cintothemax for nothing!

I feel sorry for your city , fans , Mariners team , even the fired Bavasi , but one thing i am NOT sorry for is Eric Bedard , he seems hell-bent on reaping the sows he creating for himself. I hope the Mariners think twice before handing him a multi-year contract extension.
Kudos to Jordan for Hoes and Avery signings , Six down , One to go !

Anyone want to see the epic saga drawing I did to go with the Great Trembley Ice Warrior poem? The ice cat is not as great as I hoped but the overall affect is intimidating to put up in your house. Free copies if you can prove you are a fan of the mighty Warriors and Soldiers of the Ice Realm of Orioledom.

My Mom calls it Skinemax and she won't let me watch it alone. I sneak out of bed and watch it after Oriole games but she caught me once and she screamed and fainted and hit her head on a plant pot. She was still laying there when I went to work the next morning.

I have thought Dave Trembley was the man for the job from Day one. His demeanor and plans for the team didn't sound like the same old Dribble all the other managers before him had said. I've been telling my Co-workers since day 1 that this will be the guy who gets us our 1st winning season (this year I believe) and get us to the playoffs (maybe this year if they get a horseshoe up their butt) ;) heres wishing

Thank goodness Joe Girardi was stupid enough to say no to the job and that opened the door for Trembley.
Dave Trembley is my favorite manager since Earl. We need him. Here's to a long career as the O's manager(as Chollie chugs a pint).

Considering that baseball players are exceedingly superstitious any truth to the thought that Andy MacPhail packed up the Os losing ways with Tejada and Bedard as a little added bonus to the Astros and Mariners. Astros 5 games under .500. Mariners 21 games under .500.
As to Saturday nights, just relax and trust your stuff. Maybe the Os have their own "special" rituals on Saturday night and that's why they perform so pitifully and Sunday afternoons. Hey Os scale back on your Saturday night entertainment and save something for the game.

To The Turk Rules: Wow dude. I love fantasy litterature and the O's as much as you, but I guess I'm just not quite as up-front with the first love as you are. Maybe you've taught me to be a little more free? Thanks for that. I sort of picture Trembley making his Saber Cat take a lot of grounders before there's any bounding.

StuckinDC:
The saber cat does not live in this realm in full. He abides by no master except the Great Warrior King Trembley. He only arises when called to go to battle. That seems to be about the 7th inning each game.
The ice cat and his twin the snow leopard once came together when i called them to battle. My mom was trying to ground me but her efforts were stopped by the twin mystc cats' mauling her into a deep sleep. She was not hurt except her memory was erased and she forgot to ground me.
