Sweet-N-Loewen
I'm heading out the door in a few minutes to take my physical - the first for me since, I believe, high school - but I wanted to crank out a quick entry.
Adam Loewen pitched on consecutive nights for the first time since beginning his injury rehab assignment, tossing another scoreless inning for Double-A Bowie. He's supposed to report to Triple-A Norfolk and appear in one game over the weekend before the Orioles decide what to do with him.
Perhaps we'll see Loewen back in Baltimore next week, when the Orioles begin a seven-day homestand against the Kansas City Royals.
In case you missed it, former Orioles pitcher Denny Bautista is changing teams again. After the Tigers designated him for assignment last week to make room for Joel Zumaya, they dealt him to the Pirates for minor league pitcher Kyle Pearson.
This is Bautista's sixth organization in six years, proving once again that having an upper-90s fastball isn't enough in this league.
I still wouldn't trade him for Jason Grimsley, but the guy was vastly overrated as a prospect. If we were compiling a Top 5 list, he might have to be included.
I also want to clarify something I wrote a few days ago, as long as we're talking about lists. The scout who was critiquing the Erik Bedard trade wasn't saying it is the greatest ever, just that it might move ahead of the Bartolo Colon and A.J. Pierzynski deals among the all-timers. We didn't delve into No. 1, 2, etc.

Comments
Uh-oh, physical? I hope this doesn't mean you're being traded.

What tough luck losing 2 pitchers basically before the game ever starts...I think Bukvich shoulda got the start, but other than the homerun he gave up he pitched pretty well. Ditto for Lance, that game coulda been a devastating blow to our whole pitching staff in general but I think they (hopefully) pulled through it pretty well.
c is for C'mon Liz, we need QUALITY tonight plzy.
this was a great post:
"Jay Payton here. I dont flip my cap because i have not done it from the get go. Anyone that knows anything about baseball knows how superstitious we are. I have not been flipping and he has been doing a great job. George and I have our only lil personal thing going on the side as well. So for all the haters out there give it a rest. Thanks"

Roch, beware the rubber glove on the physical!
And, speaking of rubber gloves, can we PLEASE get someone at shortstop that can field routine ground balls and turn the double-play. I hate to say it, but as a last resort, bring back Fahey.

The other thing that I believe you missed was the inclusion of Joe Nathan in your discussion of the Pierzynski trade. I had forgotten about that until you mentioned it yesterday on the Anita Marks show. Nathan has been nothing short of remarkable for the Twins, a major reason why they are always competitive. If the Bedard trade turns out to as good or better than that one, we can look for big things from Joenes, Tillman, and Sherrill. Maybe Butler contributes at the major league level and remember that Mickolio would have to be viewed as the fifth player in the deal. If our pitching coaches can get him straightened out, he could contribute as well.
For those so willing to trade Sherrill, let's keep in mind that we have control of him thru 2010.

Actually, I did include Nathan, but I botched the spelling of his last name on my first attempt before fixing it later. - Roch

Roch,
i would have to say that Trembly with his obvious lack of starting pitching last night did a marvelous job of keeping the game winnable for the O's. that display of use and not abuse is the reason i love to watch this team.
here's a couple of chipmunk questions for you:
1. what decides what side the home town dugout is on?
2.does Amber ever want to address Jim Palmer and Jim Hunter as "Jim's or just Jim"

Told ya they should have started Bukvich... :-)
I DL Albers to give him 2 weeks off & find out what is wrong, then bring up....it pains me to type this.... Fah
Ahhhh the first over 40 physical... You are in for a surprise. I hope your Dr is a little old lady with tiny fingers & not one of your workout buds from the gym. :-) It's not exactly the same physical like it was in grade school Roch....
Maybe upper 90s isn't enough, but it does get you several more chances with many more teams than most would get.
How can you utter the name Grimsley in an Oriole blog!
Most of us get the scout critique Roch & appreciate the comment. Don't let the micro managers get you down.

"A scout from another organization believes the Erik Bedard trade to Seattle could exceed the Bartolo Colon trade to Montreal and the A.J. Pierzynski trade to San Francisco as the best in baseball history."
'the best in baseball history' kind of implies that it was the best ever, no?
actually, it doesn't imply - it explicity states.
come on Roch! you're better than that!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------That's why I was clarifying what I wrote. The wording was deceiving. Better than that? OK. Perfect? No. - Roch

Roch,
Did you notice that Mike Costanzo was the Catcher in last nights Tides game...
Are the O's grooming him for a call-up to play a back-up role at 1B/3B/C ???
His versatility at different positions could free up a few roster spots due to the recent pitching injuries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He won't go anywhere until he cuts down on the strikeouts, but they're definitely grooming him for a utility role. The more positions he plays, especially catching, the more valuable he becomes and the better his chances of reaching the majors. - Roch

Jeffrey Hammonds would have to be on that top 5 list.
Posted by: nebraska_jeff | June 26, 2008 10:50 AM
That makes a little more sense now about his list.
But lets hold out hope that it does end up being the single best trade of all time!

I have checked the Sun, the Post, MiLB, Baseball America, the Keys homepage and the Baysox homepage and no news about Wieters getting promoted.
While I didn't agree with the idea of rewarding him with an all-star appearence I understood it. Please tell me what we have to gain by keeping him at a level where he is clearly dominant.

If that was really Payton who posted that comment I will eat the turn up bill of MY hat....
He didn't start doing it when the others did because he probably wasn't playing for a few days when it began!

I wonder... if Matt winds up on the DL and Adam's arm feels fine after having thrown on consecutive nights with Bowie (a test that is very important to Trembley and the bullpen) if they might not consider dropping the solo game at AAA off the rehab and bringing him back for the DC series? We're running out of fresh arms right about now.
On a sidenote: I don't like these getaway day early afternoon games...it makes it very hard to follow the game and still look like I'm working. AND stupid MLB.tv won't let me watch while I'm at work because I'm in the "black out" area... phooey

Any chance that Burres will be feeling well enough to throw out of the pen if needed?

Well Jeff, Burres probably didn't have time to stop by the choke 'n puke burger joint with a 1:20 start time, so maybe so....

"He didn't start doing it when the others did because he probably wasn't playing for a few days when it began! "
Brian - Even players who don't play in that day's game still meet out at the mound for a round of knuckles and high fives after every win.
Posted by: Tracy | June 26, 2008 12:17 PM
Jeff V--To quote both Jerry Coleman and Jim Palmer, we may indeed see Brian Burres "throwing up in the pen."

I agree with Jimi The Meek. Trembley, and I'm sure Kranitz as well, did an excellent job with the staff last night. Last year that could have been a 16-4 final score.
Q is for Quit screaming that all hope is lost for the roadtrip if Liz doesn't go 8 innings tonight.

What did I tell you? Fernando Cabrera is called up, and then we'll have Fahey too. It was painful to see two starters knocked out but at least our spot starters performed pretty well. If Bukvich hadn't gave up that HR, then game might have been closer. Same with Cormier, I think, he gave up the HR too.
Why does the team give up HRs, but never hit them as much? I thought Kevin Millar said they had 5 or 6 guys who could hit 20 or more HRs?
Let's see it, Kevin! Take the series today with a high-powered long ball offense.

Now can everyone see why McPhail was stockpiling all those pitchers during the past offseason?
Posted by: Allan | June 26, 2008 2:44 PM
Really Tracy?
Posted by: Brian | June 26, 2008 4:13 PM
Ben W:
Last I checked:
Huff has 14 home runs, Markakis and Scott each have 12, and Millar and Mora have 11 and 10, respectively. With just over half the season left to play, these are five guys with a decent shot at 20 or more home runs.
What, did you want them to all have hit their 20 home runs before July? I'd rather spread them out over a full season...
