Saying goodbye to Trachsel - again

If Steve Trachsel throws another pitch for the Orioles, they'll have to acquire him a third time.

Trachsel was designated for assignment today after going 2-5 with an 8.39 ERA in 10 games. The bullpen experiment has ended. So has his Orioles career.

The Orioles have returned to a four-man bench by purchasing Oscar Salazar's contract from Triple-A Norfolk. He hasn't played in the majors since 2002. He'll be a good right-handed bat off the bench.

Salazar, 29, was hittng .311 with seven homers and 44 RBIs at Norfolk.

The Cubs need a starting pitcher, but I doubt they'd give Trachsel a third chance. It didn't work out very well last year. That ship probably has sailed.

The Orioles needed Trachsel to eat up innings, but he couldn't do it. They didn't believe he could adapt to a bullpen role - though his last outing might have gone smoother if the defense hadn't failed him.

He'll end up in somebody's rotation later this summer.

Well the writing been on the freaking wall for weeeeeeeeeeek !

I cannot say I am sad to see him go this time. I could have lived with the long games if he could have given us 7 innings an outing, but I believe age has finally caught up with Mr. Trachsel.

I do not believe he will be in any rotation again...not after his performance with the Cubs last year and with us this year.

Thanks Steve

I'm sad for Trax that it had to end this way. I'm not sad to see him go as it relates to the team, because he was becoming more of a hinderance than any kind of help...but I always liked him in interviews and whatnot. Seems like a good guy! I wish him well.

Best of luck to ya down the road, Steve!

It just wasn't happening for him this year, but he seems like a stand up guy. I hope he considers coaching as the next phase in his career, and I wish him the best.

Would have been nice for him to fetch a prospect of some sort. I guess teams tend not to give those things away for guys with an 8.39 era.

Tracy,

Well said, couldn't agree more.

Good luck, Steve

I've been expecting that exact move, Trax and Salazar, for 2+ weeks now.... Thanks Steve, but I think its over for you and this is the best thing for the team.

You gotta tip your hat to the guy, he made it 15 years in the big leagues and no one will ever confuse his stuff with Greg Maddux. Happy trails, Trax.

Roch, at some point could you give us a breakdown of Freddie Bynum vs. Alex Cintron? Cintron actually showed some promise a few years ago with the D-Backs. Shouldn't he be given a shot at the regular gig? Bynum isn't the least bit impressive.

Honesty, to expect Trachsel in another team's rotation is ridiculous. No one in MLB plays with an old pitcher who's ERA and all his other stats show he is finished.

And that is what he is - finished. I'm not dancing on his grave, but what is this 'feel sorry for Trax' stuff? The guy made a ton of money this year being an absolutely HORRIFIC pitcher. Get a grip on the emotion - remember this is a business now.

All in all, Trax should be proud of his big league career. He wasn't a star by any means but he endured a long time and won his fair share of games. But his time had come, at least with the Orioles.

Excited to see if Oscar Salazar can make an impression with whatever playing time the team gives him. Would be particularly nice if he showed a knack for pinch-hitting. Perhaps he could be a Daryle Ward type.

"Would have been nice for him to fetch a prospect of some sort."

And if pigs could fly? Just be grateful we got Moore, Cherry and Renshaw for him last year and they had the good sense to stop pitching him this year.

Tip your hat to the guy? Yes. Happily waive bye, bye? You betcha. It's about time Salazar got a chance. Terrero probably deserves one too.

Sorry Phil, as much as I'd like to agree with you, having never really been impressed by even a single pitch from the arm of Trax, the stats don't lie.

Say what you want about him, but in 15 major league seasons, including seven campaigns with over 200 IP, his career era is a not-so-embarrassing 4.39 (3 seasons over 5.00 and 4 under 4.00). I don't think he struck fear into anyone, but for most of his career he was a guy who could keep you in the game. I'm pretty sure a lot of hurlers would not mind that career.

I am not going to trash the man. I feel bad for him, ending it this way. I thought this might happen in late July or August, not this soon. I have made some jokes lately, but I always liked Trachsel's approach & effort. I wish all the O's pitchers got as much out of their ability & skills as he did.
On the other hand, I predicted Salazar's promotion & applaud it.

phil... a ton of money??? Compared to many of us, perhaps, by baseball standards, not even close...

The only way Trachsel ends up starting for someone else is if a pitching coach sees something he can fix and wants to roll the dice. It’s a low commitment deal, so it’s possible someone might want to take it on, but he’s aging and no one will confuse him with being a former Cy Young award winner. If Trachsel hangs it up, he can do so without shame. He was a serviceable pitcher for years in the majors, doing so without spectacular stuff (which is a lot better than many pitchers who have come along with supposedly spectacular stuff and were busts).

The club, of course, has to move along and do what it needs to do. I’ve long defended Trachsel and thought getting him both times were solid moves, but he just doesn’t have it anymore and it’s time for him to go. The system is full of good young pitchers, and guys like Liz, Olson, Johnson, and Albers seem to be up to the task so far or are close enough to give them big league chances.

Roch. You seem like a knowledgeable baseball guy so I'm baffled that you'd think that Trachsel is going to 'end up in somebody's rotation later this summer'. Like which team would be that desperate?
Like Phil, I can't believe the sorry for Trax sentiments...He's clearly done and don't feel sorry for him. Teams like the O's and Cubs gave this guy more chances than he deserved and allowed him to make an extra 5 Mill ..Not too bad for a sub.500 career pitcher! And for that poster who suggested he be gainfully employed as a pitching coach-give your head two solid shakes!!
Like I want my pitchers emulating Trax in any way shape or form.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Never underestimate how desperate teams become for starting pitching. Maybe he throws for somebody and impresses them enough to get a look. Remember, John Bale was penciled into the Royals' rotation this spring before getting hurt. VIctor Santos made a few starts here last year. Crazier things have happened. - Roch

Darn, I guess there will be no Steve Trachsel bobblehead game this year. Take care Steve!

I don't have that much to add about Trax, only that for all his shortcomings and lack of talent, he pitched well at times, especially during the Mazzone era. Lastly, I may be proven wrong, but Roch, I just don't see another team picking up a back of the rotation starter who's clearly past his prime and essentially unable to get guys out. Trax may well have thrown his last big league pitch.

wow... phil is kind of a meanie!

My softball team needs a pitcher. I wonder if Trachsel would be interested.

Traschels career is somewhat similar to Scott Erickson. Scotty just played on a few better teams.

Sorry to see anyone go mid-season, you'd prefer them to walk off into the sunset after the season but when he looks in the mirror he can see that he was hurting this team.

Good to see we finally brought up a player that's not a Light Hitting/Pinch Running/Shortstop.

One down and still one to go. Walker designated for assignment. They are slowly but surely getting rid of old ineffective players.Steve had a nice long run. Enjoy your retirement.

Roch I would give Ponson a chance before I tried Trax. Then again I would give my #3 starter in AA a chance before either one of them.

Just like I said in spring training, released or on the DL before the all-star break.

I guess they have to cancel Trachsel t-shirt tuesday as well. Maybe Bynum will get his shining moment.

Roch: Like Kevin Costner said in, Bull Durham, "Lemmee see that cheese."

Phil, you are wrong. He has been a stand-up guy and done what was asked. When was the last time you heard him put himself before the team? He did not perform but he is a team player and I hope he pitches well wherever he goes.

by the way, he did not make 'alot of money'. In a sport that makes over $ billion dollars he made the hourly wage at Hardee's to the rest of us.

I too was surprised that Trachsel was removed from the game Saturday, but his stare down sealed the deal. It was the impetus that Trembley needed to pull the trigger on the move. He showed tremendous patience, in my opinion, with Trachsel in each of the last two seasons.

The move was long overdue. This is a season to find out what the young players can do. Now, let's find out what little we can get for Jay Payton and put Nolan Reimold in a major league uniform.

You know why Trem is an honest man and a great manager. He said thst Sal would be called up for inter league play. This guy [ Trem ] must be kept for 200 years. Sal is fun to watch. He can play 7 positions. Please keep him here till the end. Wieters is a freak. Reimold after being punished [ spring training ] kept his cool and now is producing. Rowell is still 2 years away. We're set to attact. Missed that SS in the draft . TB is smart. Very smart. I said that we would not draft a 1st. baseman. That's the least of what we need. Roberts and Millar and Payton trades will seal the deal. O's next year, for sure. Bank it!! The horrow will finally be over.

Trax could be a good pitching coach in the future contrary to what some of you say here. He knew how to pitch; he just didn't have anything left in the tank. He was effective but not spectacular in his major league career. He was an overachiever IMHO. That is why the Orioles signed him in the first place. I personally think his career is over, but just like Roch said...never underestimate teams that are desperate for starting ?)

Traschel is apparently finished as Major League pitcher , but he did tried his best with his limited talent , managed to last 15+ years , he only made $ 1.5 million salary , and he is human like rest of us .

Good luck and Thanks , Mr Traschel

Don't forget that John Wasdin and a host of other 30+ failed 5th and spot starters are dispersed throughout AAA, just waiting for someone to get injured or for a gap to open when starters get dealt and there's no one else ready in the team's minor-league system. And didn't Roch once observe that Guthrie took the trouble to listen to Trax between starts? I never led any cheers for the guy here, but I wouldn't doubt that anyone so deliberate in his preps is a serious student of the game and would make a good coach or scout on some level (and I mean organized ball, not the Atlantic League, smartasses).

I'm with Phil and TerryP. Trax stunk this year. Even if he was able to be an innings eater this year, who needs that when you compare that to a sub-500 career W/L. Bottom line W/L is all that matters in baseball. And whomever suggested he coach, come on! You really want a bunch of young arms learning how to be so dang slow that zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz oh wait what was I gonna type (was thinking about him on the mound diddling, rubbing balls, scratching, spitting, about everything except but throwing the dagdabbit ball!). Alas, Roch is right that pitching is so scarce that he will be given another chance by the end of the year. Why do you think Ponson keeps getting resigned?

Thanks Trax. Wish you all the best!

thanks for the effort, steve. good luck.

Sure it's sad.

Pretend it's you-- your whole way of making a living is thrown out the door.

Maybe you have enough money, but you have to start over and find something else to do, a whole new life.

These things happen to all of us. When they do, it's a big deal and difficult to go through. Valuable, full of growth, but miserable as well.

So thanks to the folks who feel for the guy.

Hey Roch:

How come no comments or observations from you that the O's only have 7 rbis of production out of the shortstop position.

A couple of weeks slower than you would like but the two moves they needed to make are finally completed. Now DT has a little better flexibility, lets see if he uses it.

welcome to baltimore oscar!!! He will be a good bat off the bench for sure...

Later Stevey T- just making room for the youngins

I think Steve Trachsel should go work at Burger King. I really have no reason behind this nor is there any correlation between him and said establishment. I just think it would be funny to see him flipping burgers slowly...on second thought, he would fit right in there because they have the slowest drive thru window. Perhaps the 10 minutes to take an order would go unnoticed.

Would be nice if he could go work at the Burger King where Jay Gibbons works. Gibby on fries and Trax on the mic.

i live in a wonderful, bizarre fantasy world.

"d" for delicious...

Bynum needs to sit and Cintron out there. Bynum had many chances to produce and has not, Alex is ready and willing, let him do what the rest of the ss couldnt. PRODUCE!!!!!!!!

Nebraska Jeff - The Won/loss record is not a good reflections of a pitcher's talent. It is much more a reflection of the offense of the team he plays for. A pitcher tries to prevent runs, that's all he can do. There's no such thing as pitchers who "know how to win." That's just silly myth-making.

well looks like we've found a surefire way to speed up the game like MLB has been "trying" to do for the last couple of years...
