One and done
Adam Loewen threw one inning tonight and said his arm continues to feel great. He hasn’t experienced pain in the elbow since his last start with the Orioles, on April 24 against the Seattle Mariners.
Loewen threw 11 of his 14 pitches for strikes while mowing down the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Kansas City Royals affiliate.
“I felt really good. I felt comfortable,” he said. “It was a little weird starting at 8 o’clock, with the sun being down, but it was cool out, perfect conditions to throw. I thought Matt (Wieters) was good behind the plate - big target, and you can tell he knows how to call a game. It felt really good to get back out there in a game situation.”
Loewen threw his fastball, slider and changeup. He had nice movement on his pitches. His fastball was clocked at 90-92 mph.
“I wasn’t worried about how much it was going to move. I just wanted to get ahead and I did that,” he said. “I was able to put the ball where I wanted to. I hadn’t been able to do that all year, but it felt good to be in control.”
Loewen will continue to work out with the Keys. He’s scheduled to pitch again on Friday.
“The best thing was just getting back into a game situation and getting a little bit of adrenaline,” he said. “I threw in Sarasota for about a month and it was beginning to be repetition, going through the motions, and I needed to get some game atmosphere to really get my arm strength back to where it needs to be.”
Asked about pitching in relief the rest of the season, Loewen said, “I’m fine with it. I just want to get back and help the team out. They’re doing great and they can use an extra lefty in the bullpen, and if that’s where I need to be rather than starting, I’m fine with that.”

Thanks Roch for the update on Loewen. Also nice comeback against Okajima and the Bosox.

Great report on Loewen I am glad for him or any pitcher having surgery to report they can throw without pain..It could be a big boost for the team to give trembley another lefty option..I am not worried who will go where to make room for him things often seem to work themselves out. I really look forward to next week when frederick visits Wilmington I hope to be there to cheer wieters, rowell, arrietta, and the whole team..

Roch, When was the last time, the Orioles were above .500 on June 10th?
Posted by: ron | June 10, 2008 10:28 PM
Hey Roch, thanks for the insight on Loewen. I still think he'll experience some more arm discomfort later this year, but I think it's par for the course coming back from a major surgery. Hopefully, the Orioles can count on him in their rotation in 2009. For now, he can serve in the bullpen, maybe work his way up to a long man, and perhaps even get back in the rotation for a while after the All-Star Game.
I agree with most of your baseball observations but I have to disagree with your prediction that someone will pick Steve Trachsel up later this year. I think his tank is on E. He might get a shot in Triple A, but I'm thinking he should be playing his pitching coach card right about now.

Does anyone else mute the TV when Thorne is calling the game?
Does he have to get so excited when the other team gets a big hit or makes a good play? Honestly, at times you would think he's the announcer for the opposition.
Don't get me wrong, I would never want him to ignore a great play, by either side, but sometimes I think he forgets that he isn't calling the game on ESPN. He works for MASN and his decibel level for the O's vs. the opposing team should reflect that, no matter if he likes the O's or not.
I'd listen to Angel and Manfra 100 out of 100 times if there wasn't such a big delay.
No matter, great game tonight. I love this team's fight. I think over half of their wins have been come from behind wins.
Let's get 1 of the next 2 and finish the trip at 6-3. Go O's!

Ron, 2005.
latest date that year was Aug 18th, 2005

I unfortunately got to the game in the bottom of the first inning and missed his performace. Jake Renshaw did not have as much luck. He did have a few lapses on defense behind him, with Weiters dropping a pop-up and no one covering first on a bunt. The SS for the Blue Rocks made some excellent plays. I plan to go to Friday's game. Is he going to pitch in relief or start the game?
Did you try any of the local brew? How did you like the guy in drag walking around with the updated score on a white board? That is what you get with an old scoreboard.

Ron, on June 10, 2005 the O's were 36-24, 4 games ahead of the 2nd place Red Sux. I'm not anticipating another collapse like we saw that year. The road trip we're on now would have KILLED us in the recent past.

Oooo, it's the World Champion Red Sox! Like we're supposed to be afraid or something?! (Final score Orioles 10, those other guys 6 -- take that Red Sox Nation! Oh, and can you say sweep? Sure, we knew you could! Good times never seemed so good, nah nah, nah nah, nah nah!)
A belated tribute to Steve Trachsel in the style of Rob Schneider's SNL character Richard Laymer ("the Richmeister"):
Steeeve, the Stevenator, lookin' in for the sign, takin' a look at the baserunner at first. Throwin' over to first. Toein' the rubber, backin' off the rubber, stallin' for time. Makin' the batter wait. Steeeve, the Trach-stallator, lookin' in, now you're ready, now you're not. Throwin' over to first again. Adjustin' the bill of your cap. Now you pitch, but the batter calls for time. Askin' the ump for a new ball. Stevorama! Rubbin' up the baseball, grabbin' the rosin bag, wipin' the sweat off your brow, scratchin' an itch. Shakin' off the sign...throwin' over to first. Lookin' in to the catcher, lookin' over at the dugout, lookin' in the stands, lookin' up in the sky, lookin' at the scoreboard, countin' the stitches on the ball. Just hangin' out on the mound, thinkin' about nothin' in particular. Now, shakin' off another sign..and another. Almost makin' a pitch, but checkin' the runner instead. Pretendin' you're in Groundhog Day. B-Rob, over there at second noddin' off, but lookin' cool as always and tryin' to act awake. Steeeeve, Stevo, the Stevemeister. Stuporman working your magic, tuggin' your jersey, puttin' the sleeper hold on the opposin' lineup, suspended animation, delayin' the inevitable, puttin' the game in the deep freeze, pushin' the snooze button, sneakin' some knockout drops in their drinks. Steeeve, the Stevenator! Steve van Winkle! Got your best mesmerizing slo-mo, procrastination mo-jo workin' today!!! Steeeve!

Orioles were above .500 during Palmeiro's 3000 hit season (2005). Not that long ago.

Word has it that Eddie was on NESN tonight rooting for the Sox? What's up with that?

Roch, you should congratulate Bradford for appearing in his 500th game against Manny.

So far so good for Loewen. Though, for me, the best part of this entry was his comment about Wieters knowing how to call a game. Thanks for the updates Roch.

Great comeback once again. This team's resiliency is remarkable!

Man, I love ESPN. A bunch of Red Sox highlghts and then in a lowered voice at the end "and the orioles win 10-6"

Good game by Huff last night. In a weird sort of way, maybe the off-season stuff woke him up. The fans get a say in behavior off of the field. Always fun to beat the Sox up North.

Oh, by the way, if you go on mlb.com and vote for the all star game use all your email accounts. I voted 100 times for B-Rob and Cakes. I still have one more account.

ron,
2005. O's started the season 42-28 and were only 2 back of the Sox at the AS Break.
Then came the collapse and debacle that was the second half. Losing baseball, steriod scandal, manager debacle, etc.

Greg - Eddie M. was on NESN but it was to talk about his experiences with Manny when they were both part of the Indians. He wasn't rooting for the Sox but did have a lot of positive things to say about Manny, even joked that he though Manny wouldn't be able to pass him in HRs that night cause there was "too much pressure" with Eddie looking on...guess that really wasn't an issue!

Great stuff Ken Francis (needed a good belly laugh first thing in the morning). Greg I watched NESN on MLBTV.COM and saw Eddie, but no he wasn't rooting for the Red Sox. I hope this winning doesn't have the ironic effect of slowing down our rebuilding process. Hope the Orioles don't stray from their master plan and not trade players that were going to be prior to this .500 ball success. Having another 4 or 5 quality players for BRob and another 4 or 5 from trading Huff, Millar, Payton would sure be sweet after getting 10 for Tejada and Bedard. That would set us up for years and years. Go O's!

I am pretty sure that ESPN is an abbreviation for the "Everything Sox and Pinstripes Network".
It's alright all you other clubs-- if you win the world series or perhaps have the best record in baseball you might get a secondary headline. Or if you are hitting over .400 and destroying the NL there's a chance there will be a mention. But enough of the corporate giant against the little guys talk-- great O's win! Where did this offense come from?? The vets have really been pulling their weight. Huff looks to be in decent shape which I think has helped. Good AB for Bradford too-- hope that gives him a little confidence. Anyway, many fewer players are stealing paychecks this year and I think that goes to the depth issue. Roch, any idea when Salazar might play?

It was definitely good to see Adam Loewen throw the way he did last night...that's the best control and most ease he's seemed to pitch with since coming out of spring training LAST year. It was worth waiting throw the rain delay and having my hair go frizz city on me.
And since we left before the rain had a chance to come back and get us again we got to listen to the last two innings of the O's game on the radio on the ride back. Good times!!
Posted by: Tracy | June 11, 2008 9:15 AM
Ummm ... I was forced to watch the NESN broadcast if I wanted to see the O's last night, and, Eddie Murrray did in fact route for the Sox on Manny's bloop single. He was yelling, "c'mon, get that RBI, c'mon, get that runner in, there it is!" And then he was a bit disappointed that the runner was held at third on the hit. I didn't like it, but what the hell, he's free to do what he wants. He had some nice things to say about Baltimore but it seemed he's got a chip on his shoulder.
Posted by: Almost Believin' | June 11, 2008 10:09 AM
Adam Loewen with the "I'll do anything for the team" attitude is refreshing. You think Bedard would have uttered the same words?
Thornes annoying but Palmer & Martinez are just as bad. Every time you mention Trembleys name you don't have to preface it with "Orioles Manager". The majority of fans watching are real fans that know hwo he is and those that don't know need to figure it out.
Posted by: Charles | June 11, 2008 10:12 AM
I watched the NESN broadcast in horror. Eddie WAS openly rooting for the Sox. At first, it seemed like innocent rooting for "his boy" Manny...hoping his near miss HR went fair. But then, it took an ugly turn when the next batter, I think Lowell, hit one deep down the line, and Eddie went "oh, get out. aw" when it went foul. Heartbreak city.

that's not cool, eddie. not cool at all.
Posted by: brian f | June 11, 2008 12:26 PM
Ricky Bobby,
I think (I'm not certain) that when the game is on Channel 13 and MASN, that Channel 13 does NOT have the delay. I noticed this the other day, but I'm not sure if this was a fluke.
I was watching the Channel 13 broadcast and listening to Joe and Fred on the radio.
Can anyone confirm this or was I imagining things?

Roch,
By the way, give some props to whoever picked out the picture and headline for the Sun Sports section today.
Boston Tee-Off Party! Great line and picture of the Oriole Mad Hatters celebrating. That picture and headline is now decorating my fridge.
