Not running low on Loewen

Adam Loewen is scheduled to pitch tonight at Double-A Bowie, the most recent stop on his injury rehab tour.

Loewen didn't allow a run in three innings at Single-A Frederick. His command has been good, and most important, he's pain-free in his left arm.

The Orioles don't want to rush him, but Bowie hits the road in two days. Frederick won't be back from its trip. So what happens to Loewen? Do the Orioles plant him in their bullpen, or let him spend a few days in Delmarva or Aberdeen?

Don't forget that the Orioles are handing out retro logo caps tonight to the first 20,000 fans 15-and-over.

Roch--What night are the Birds doing the jumper cable promotion?

It's on a Saturday, right?

Which retro version????? They have changed hats & uniforms over the years more than some of these bloggers probably change their underwear.....

20,000 huh...I guess those of us not there tonight can come Thursday & get one too?

I thought they were planning to send him to Norfolk for more bullpen work-3 or 4 appearances with the last 2 being on back to back days. I didn't check Norfolk's schedule-are they home?

Norfolk will be in Durham and Charlotte. Guess he could travel. - Roch

Thanks for the info!

Man, tough decision...if I go to Camden tonight I get a free hat and another possible come from behind victory...if I go to Bowie I get Loewen, Tillman and free chocolate. I'm thinking I've already got enough darn hats ;o)

I think the bigger question about Loewen isn't whether they should bring him back to the pen now or let him rehab another week- week and a half longer...but more over WHO goes to make room for him?

just a quick 2-cents on last nights game. there aren't any players on this team that i "hate" on, meaning that even when they do something good, i still find a reason to "hate" them. many posters on this blog are Payton "haters"; he can do no right. so that being said, if jay Payton had made that throw to the plate last night that Luke Scott made, he would've gotten RIPPED in the blogs, win or lose. Ty Wigginton is the fattest, slowest dude in baseball, and i don't care if it was 2 outs, and the ball was going away from Scott, you still have to make that play at home: not one word has been mentioned. i know b/c i went thru all the blogs from last nights' game. i've said before that the weaker arms are in left field, but it doesn't matter when it comes to Payton. don't get me wrong, i'm a luke scott fan and more importantly, we won the game. i'm just sayin' no one is exempt from criticism, but for the right reasons. Go O's.

No reason to rush Loewen, but he looks pretty close to ready. If he pitches well tonight then activate him and give Burress a Tides hat. Albers should get his shot to start and we can use Loewen in long relief.

winston makes a valid point. we definitely tend to confirm our own biases-- payton, hernandez, huff, mora, millar, bynum are underperformers unless they really blow us away with something special whereas Roberts, Markakis, Jones, Scott, among others really can get away with some pretty mediocre to bad performances and we let it go. We should probably just be more balanced and less critical across the board...

in defense of payton, i have seen him hit some of the best pitchers in baseball very well. he destoyed a pitch off johann santana last year and seems to come up big against tough pitchers. he got a bad rap last year in the midst of our swoon and because the FO had the audacity to say he was a major acquisition. just like making miggy a cleanup hitter when he is not naturally one, you shouldn't blame the player for a short-sighted FO.

anyway-- good point winston. payton has been a class act this year and should have earned a little break from the peanut gallery by now. also, it is kind of hard to find players to hate this year unlike previous years. give coaches and FO credit there too.

My first chance to comment on last night's game...my only gripe is that they yanked Olson so early. Yes, I want to win the game, and yes, we may have lost it if we kept him in, but the point of this season is to let the young guys show what they've got. I want Olson to try and wiggle out of that jam and get experience in close games.

WHAT THE F IS FLAT BREEZY GIVEAWAY NIGHT?!?!?!?!?!

Do NOT miss this promotional opportunity.

yet another remarkable come back, i love the tenacity of this team all around...even some of the guys I would like to see gone have contributed with timely game winning hits.

d is for dave and congrats on the anniversary! who woulda thunk it???

I checked the webernet and still see that Sir Sidney Ponson is waiting for the inevitable call from the Orioles. With his new skills we can catch the Boston and be in the Wolrd Series. Lets start a petition to Andy to show the will of the fans to make this needed move.

On a sad topic, whomever wrote the stuff about my mother is not cool. She tries to lose wait but if she doesn't eat enough she has to go to the bathroom alot and it hurts.

===========================

Where there lived a humble family, religious through and through.

In regards to Payon, I have to admit that--yes--he has really done a solid job this year. I'm surprised at how well he has taken to his role and also about how well he has done with the opportunities he's received (that Grand Slam vs the BoSox is still a highlight of the season).

I think his attitude is a symptom of what appears to be an excellence club house this season.

Thank God Trembley got the job ahead of lerxst.....

How good was the O's-M's trade? Listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDVzXdyZpHs and this should indicated what Seattle thinks.

Winston:
I have to disagree with you on Payton. I have never seen him hit a cut-off man on a throw to the infield. I wonder if he even knows what a cut-off man is. He's probably wondering why the ss is standing in the OF with his glove in the air. And he often makes significantly poor batting decisions. He is not a good fundamental ballplayer, even for this team. And Ramon H is on the list. Can't he please run to first base? Other than that, I agree with you. And if these two are the worst we have, that's a good thing. And I have mixed emotions on Huff.

Winston, you make a good point about Scott's throw last night. Some here have been critical of his defense. To be honest, I haven't seen enough of his defense to judge, but the throw last night was horrid. Maybe he's more of a full-time DH than anything else. Where does that leave Huff? Full-time first baseman. He's not as good defensively as Millar, but has more to offer on offense. Personally, I would like to see Reimold used in left-field in August and September.

JPA - In regards to Payton. He didn't miraculously get a bad rap last year, he earned it. He wore his negative attitude on his sleeve. I attended a game in August last year and I have never seen a player more disinterested in what was going on than he was that night.

The Tejada trade was about more than just getting equal value in return. It was about changing the attitude and chemistry of the clubhouse. In Tejada's absence, Mora especially, and Payton haven't been nearly as unhappy and negative as last year.

I just read Connelly's column on how Miggie should have gotten a better reception last night.
WHY??? Why should we bother to clap for someone that gave up on the team. It doesn't matter if "losing waned on him". It is his JOB to NOT give up. If I were to "give up" on my job, I'd get fired, and I sure as hell make less money than he does. If you gave up writing about the O's because of their losing, I'm sure you would be fired too, right? I'm glad you didn't write some sort of bleeding heart story for Miggie. You're the only good writer the Sun has. Keep up good journalism Roch!

Winston/JPA. I'm one of Payton's many critics and you both make good points. I just never could stand the guy and I guess it's more with frustration that he is getting too much playing time. It's not Jay's fault that the O's signed him and keep sending him out there, warts and all. My anger is misdirected and I'm sure Payton isn't a completely bad guy and I must admit, he seems to be doing the best with the fading talent he has. I suppose I can tolerate another year of him as I don't think he'll get dealt anywhere else.
This year's O's seem to be more likeable but it probably has more to do with the winning and their scrappy/underdog style of play/mentality.
We as fans all have our biases/favourites. Roberts gets a free pass for the steroids, yet Gibbons/Tejada don't get the same treatment. Cal can do no wrong yet Eddie Murray gets a bad rap because of the media.

Hey Roch, Do you think the Orioles will go after Cristian Guzman in the offseason? Should they?

my vote would be to move Cormier to make room for Loewen, or maybe Andy can pull off a trade to make room for him. What I would like to see happen is Loewen stay in the minors for the rest of the season and have him build his arm strength up rather than tinker with the bullpen's chemistry just to get him an inning here and there.

Matt - it's my understanding that for both Loewen and Bierd the Orioles don't have the option to just leave them in the minors, Lowen because he would have to clear waivers to be sent down officially and Bierd because he would have to be offered back to Detroit (or wherever he came from). So they can stall with the "rehab assignment" as long as they possibly can but sooner or later they have to actually get them through the rehab process and back on the roster. It's a nice problem to have to make a difficult decision from a position of plenty than from one of picking the least bad option.

I think Walker gets traded when Lowenn comes back- or does Burress have any options left in AAA? Liz could go down I guess to work on a few things. But the real question is when Beird comes back who goes then? Bradford gets traded? Think anyone is interested in Walker or Bradford for more than $30,000 we got from the Gomer deal last year? Or do they go back to that 13 man pen and leave the bench sparse? Geez Roch you ask me one question and I as you 5 more. Dont even get started about when Ray comes back- and in the not so distant future we will get back the fan favorite Baez.

Retro Hats? Those are hats with a Retro logo but they never wore hats like that EVER.

winston - you're flat out wrong man. Ty Wiggington is not that slow for a big man. He's way faster than Ramon or Kevin Millar. He was going pretty hard and fast on that base hit.

Almost Believin', ok, then the speed demon is the fattest. i still say a decent throw gets him. i would love to see his stolen bases numbers; he may be a good base-runner, but he's by no means fast. seriously though, just want to say good comments by everyone, for and against payton. i like when this blog is about good debate, not "you're wrong, i'm right. you're an idiot, your mama" dialogue. i was merely trying to give an example of the "hater" mentality and it was cool to see some of you cop to it a little (i must say i have my moments, i.e. millar, ramon)...now watch after all this, Payton freaks out in the clubhouse and gets waived for conduct detrimental to the team.

thanks Jack. I forgot about Bierd. you're right, its a nice problem to have.

What's wrong with saying "you're wrong" to someone when debating an issue? People can be wrong about things and still be great people. Anyway, you sound like a good dude winston. Next time I'll say "I disagree" instead. Hmmm ... that is better.
