Brian Burres
Orioles left-hander Brian Burres did some throwing and running earlier today, and he's expected to make tomorrow night's start at Camden Yards - stomach permitting.
There are no guarantees when you're battling a virus, but he looks much better today.
Then again, Burres seemed fine after throwing a side session on Friday, and look what happened.
Manager Dave Trembley wouldn't reveal his Plan B for tomorrow night, saying it depends on who pitches today if he goes to his bullpen.
Trembley spoke with Adam Loewen earlier today. Loewen said his arm is 100 percent, but Trembley is going to make absolutely sure.
The last thing he wants is for Loewen to have a poor outing and blame it on his health.
A decision on Loewen is coming soon. The club is checking to see whether he's used up all 30 days of his rehab assignment.

Solomons -
I agree we should not block development of young players. We have no prospects in the system for SS. We have prospects (Rowell and Moore) who need to play 3B, and Moore should be playing 3B now in the majors so we know if he can cut it. Furthermore, if Huff could get more playing time at 3B, it gives Scott (who also needs more development and evaluation) more playing time too.
Ergo, by your reasoning, Mora should be at SS to avoid blocking development and evaluation of younger talent this year.
To those who say Mora cannot play SS:
1) neither can anyone else in our system
2) he was a semi-regular there (and pretty good at it too) for the Orioles in the past
3) I never said I was sure he could or still could. I said I wanted them to get him there in the NL parks and I wanted to know the reasoning why they wouldn't try it.
Look, if Mora and Trembley both know he can't even play the below-average defense we have been getting there from everyone else, and he would embarrass us out there, fine. Don't play him at SS. Just rest him entirely on the bench more often to allow the others to play.
And for those who think that any suggestion, question, criticism, or vent-in-frustration directed towards the manager or the front office constitutes "pessimism", "whining", disloyalty, "obsessing on the latest game's weakness", etc :
Think again. These are simple opinons. And, no, we don't need to have been major league players or managers to have opinions or share opinions. The inalienable right to express armchair-expert opinions is what makes sports (and this blog) great. So, I would suggest a few less negative characterizations of your fellow posters might be in order.
But, as always, this is just my opinion, and I could be wrong.
"m" is for making mora more maleable

Roch,
Don't you think Lance Cormier would have been the top option to make the spot start on Monday? Now that he threw 4 innings last night I think you could count him out for a start on Monday. If Burres can't go or even if he only lasts a few innings, I'm not sure who is available for extended duty?

JP, Cormier just pitched 4 innings in relief, I doubt very much he would be an option. I hope Loewen is ok. Every one has his ups and downs regardless what level your on. The main thing about Loewen is that he is healthy. His first few outings will be like going thru spring training again.
As for the SS situation I am wondering if the Orioles would ever give Blake Davis a shot in the majors. Not really sure what he is hitting or what his fielding is like. In spring Training when he was brought in as a fill in he opened some eyes with his play. Might be another Salazar at the plate. I am not sure though.

If Wieters really tears it up for the next two months in Bowie, doesn't he deserve a September call-up??

With Guthrie, Huff, and Scott all starting, we can't lose today, right?...right?
Mark C--good post(s), but Mora at SS just ain't gonna happen.

If a opposing pitcher throws anything but a curve ball to adam jones he should be pulled from the game. He couldn't hit a curve to save his life. They keep ringing tons of praise his way, saying he is now batting 274 .Guys he doesn't hit with runners on base. He only has 28 RBi's and hardly ever drives the ball.He has 7 hits this series and all were either seeing eye grounders or bloopers that just fell in. He never drives the ball in the power alleys.

O's should have until around the 12th of July to decide on Loewen if I understand the rules correctly.

This Sunday slump is getting rediculous. Baffled by Jason Bergmann...really? I'm at a loss.

It Hurts to Listen--
Jim Hunter confused Aubrey Huff with Kevin Millar on a 3-0 pitch and a 3-1 pitch to end the top of the 6th.
Hunter uses the word "interesting" nearly every other heart beat.
It was bad enough that Don Sutton beat Jim Palmer in the final game of 1982. Now, we have to listen to him as he pedantically instructs us with the voice of a 117- year- old man.
God, how I miss Bill O'Donnell and Chuck Thompson.

Marc C--You are correct; you could be wrong.
You have sharp insights and write well. Don't be afraid to show us that you have the ability to think through things and change your mind.
I have a lot of trouble seeing Melvin Mora as an Oriole shortstop. I could have seen that 5 years ago. Not now.
Keep it coming. It's always a pleasure to read your thoughts.

I miss Jon Miller also. This sunday losing has to be on their minds. Nothing can explain this. It also seems the strike zone is wide when the Orioles are at bat!
