Today at Norfolk...

Fernando Cabrera made his first appearance with the Tides on an injury rehab assignment and walked three batters in two scoreless innings against the Durham Bulls.

Greg Aquino gave up four runs in the ninth inning in a 10-7 loss. Those were the first runs off Aquino in 10 games.

Scott Moore had two hits and two RBIs, but he's batting just .195.

Mike Costanzo and Tike Redman each had two hits and an RBI. Costanzo's average is up to .240, but he's struck out 62 times in 179 at-bats.

Radhames Liz starts tomorrow's game against Syracuse. He'll be opposed by former Oriole John Parrish (6-0, 3.55 ERA).

Parrish will always be one of my favorite players on the beat. I don't think I ever caught him in a bad mood. And if he was struggling, he never took it out on the media. He talked before and after games. It's just unfortunate that he never became the power lefty coming out of the bullpen that the Orioles envisioned. He was too wild.

Anyone remember his first game with the Orioles, when he struck out nine Yankees in seven innings to match Sammy Stewart's club record for pitchers making their debut? He struck out the side in the first inning.

Yeah, I remember Parrish. Too bad he didn't meet Kranitz. He could have been straightened out. Obviously, he has been if he's 6-0, and has a moderate E.R.A.

MLB has gone too far now.... they are going to the Supreme Court to STOP fantasy baseball! Can you believe the greed, the audacity? THREE SC Justices have excused themselves...apparently they play Fantasy Baseball..... can you imagine their fellow Judges taking it away from them?
It seems MLB says the names, the stats, etc belong to them, therefore all Fantasy Baseball players should pay them for the right to do this... that F baseball should be funneled through them or they should be paid for it.
GREAT PR move by MLB idiots.... this helps generate interest! My question is, IF sites are free & not charging fees for the leagues, can they still continue them? Probably not, MLB will cry about the advertising generated.

I just can't see Parrish as a starter, considering the wildness.
Thanks for the updates Roch...

Brian - you serious? Can I have the link?

This is very interesting and ridiculous.

Roch:
What is the latest on the rehab status of Penn and Loewen?

I'm putting this in a new thread rather than see it get buried on an old one.

Regarding Guthrie: You guys want to hear the ultimate non-support story? When Palmer won the Cy Young in '73 I think it was, wasn't he 23-11 with a 2.09? To lose 11 and still have a 2.09, you had to have lost a BUNCH of games 1-0 and 2-1. Yet he still won 23.

When Bob Gibson set the 1.12 ERA record in '68, he still lost 9 games.

How can Guthrie get to that point, where he loses games like last night but still has a good record at the end?

By the way, agree with previous poster who was the only person so far to cite actual logical reasons why it was right thinking for Roberts to try to steal third. Maybe unlike all of us, he didn't assume Nick could or would get a hit. Maybe his approach was that all that dancing would distract Pettite and lead to a Markakis hit.

Hey Roch

I was actually at that game, sitting 4 rows from the field, looking right at the first base bag. We were immersed in yanks fans, and every time Dave Justice came to bat, or ran out past us, I'd start chanting "Hal-Lie Bar-ry" and clap like the annoying 'lets go yankees' chant.

2 things made that game stick with me, Parrish's performance, and the fact that my buddy was given the tickets for their anniversary by his girlfriend, and took me instead! (Needless to say they broke up shortly after that game)

Roch, pretty sure you made a mistake. Norfolk played their game tonight (you mentioned it already.) with no double header scheduled, Liz is not facing Parrish (although I think they squared off last week)

I meant "tomorrow." Thanks for catching it. I usually give minor league results the following day. It's Liz vs. Parrish tomorrow. This will be the second time that Parrish has faced Norfolk. - Roch

Apparently Ben W has never heard of Google.....

Ben W, here you go: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,360321,00.html

Hey Doug, if you know how to use google, why don't you post the link?

Doug - I have heard of Google. It's my best friend on the computer, haha. I have not heard of this story, so I didn't know what to search for. I just wanted the link because Brian knew where to go, anyway.

Roch - what's the status on Bierd?

Steve:

Let's not forget that Gibson was giving the Cards almost a complete game every start and Palmer was averaging at least 8 IP during his 2nd Cy Old year (75; he also was starting almost every 4th game). Even though the mound had been lowered and DHs introduced by then, only the B.O. Sox were coming close to scoring 5 runs per game in the AL, and the average was closer to 4 and change. So there were many more "pitchers' duels," more workhorses who hung around till the bitter end for the decision, and perhaps even better parity among most teams in each division, thus more games decided by a run or two. And I don't know how often Palmer or Gibson were shelled, but they each pitched an awful lot of shutouts and 1-run games compared to today's standards, leading me to believe that several of their losses were not due to poor run support but just a matter of "taking one for the team" or hoping that there'd be enough 3-run homers on your side to catch up after a 4-6 run deficit.

Speaking of MLB, I heard in passing on the radio — but I think I got the story right — that MLB wants little league teams to stop using team names and logos of big-league teams. If it’s true, that's a shame!

I was at Parrish’s ML debut. It started with him striking out Knobloch, Jeter and Williams (I was in the press box since I was working on a feature on Chestertown's Ryan Thompson, who was with the Yankees at the time.)

Here is a link to the Fantasy baseball story.

for the record, it is the VERY 1st link if you google fantasy baseball.

I remember listening to John Parrish's debut on the radio while I was digging into some steamed crabs at Wildwood. Nice memory.

Years later at Wildwood, I listened to the thud of Jack Cust plowing into the earth as he headed for the plate...and then those desperate scrapes of his knuckles on the chalk as he tried to crawl his way towards home. Sad.
