Hernandez received a cortisone injection in his sore left wrist yesterday. X-rays and an MRI didn't reveal any serious damage, and the Orioles are saying that the wrist is sprained.

Hernandez won't swing a bat today, which makes him unavailable for tonight's game. We might not see him before Friday, leaving the Orioles' bench short again.

Steve Trachsel is being skipped in the rotation because of the open dates on the schedule. Garrett Olson starts Friday, followed by Brian Burres Saturday and Jeremy Guthrie on Sunday. Trachsel could be used out of the bullpen, but manager Dave Trembley sounds hesitant to do that because the veteran doesn't have much experience in a relief role.

In fact, he almost has none. His only relief appearance in his entire major league career came in 1995 with the Chicago Cubs. That's it.

The rotation will require another adjustment after Sunday, though Trembley hasn't revealed it. He did indicate, however, that he'd like to put a right-hander - likely Trachsel - between Olson and Burres.

Chris Ray and Adam Loewen will join the team in St. Petersburg, Fla. next weekend, since they're rehabbing at the minor league camp in Sarasota. They'll both throw a bullpen session. Ray will get his first work off a mound on Monday.

Randor Bierd still hasn't been cleared to throw while dealing with a right shoulder impingement, but it could happen soon. He remains on a strengthening program.

Bullpen coach Alan Dunn will serve as pitching coach over the weekend while Rick Kranitz attends his daughter's college graduation.

anybody remember last year when D-Cab almost started a brawl against Boston when he beaned Little Man, i mean, Pedroia? And remember all the crap talk little man had after the game, pretty much saying Cabrera was a no good and was just mad b/c he can't get anybody out? will be a very interesting game tomorrow. i wonder how long a memory cabrera has. personally, i hope he puts one in pedroia's earhole. i can't stand that guy.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, as I haven't checked in here for awhile...but since both Luis and Ramon are outta the lineup, could I be so bold as to ask which Hernandez you're referring to?

np: "What are Their Names," David Crosby

Roch -

Can you tell the Crow that Adam needs to focus on recognizing the breaking ball because the pitchers are throwing him that because they know he can bash the fastball, and when he learns to hit the breaking ball, they have no choice but to throw him the fastball to keep him honest?

When he can achieve this, I have no doubt that he will be in the .300 club and get hits the whole field. I'll love to see him get an opposite field hit as well.

Thanks!

I don't think Trachsel is the guy you want between Olson and Burres. Ideally, you want a power arm like Cabrera starting between the two soft-tossing lefties. When Trembley can get it set up properly, the rotation order (with the guys we have now) should be Guthrie, Olson, Cabrera, Burres and Trachsel.

Terpfan - I apologize if you didn't understand the previous post on the Jeter for Cabrera hypothetical. To be fair, your response was not that clear either. Allow me to flush out the hypothetical a little more for you.

In order to fully understand what I was getting at, you need to understand the assumptions being made. I (and I think everyone else) realize that these assumptions require an almost complete suspension of reality and that this hypothetical trade would never occur.

Assumptions: (1) That the Yankees would consider trading Jeter (who is the modern face of their franchise); (2) That Jeter would waive whatever no trade provision that he has; (3) That Angelos would permit MacPhail to assume Jeter's contract; and (4) That MacPhail is willing to forgo his long term plan for a short term fix at shortstop.

Now that we have those out of the way, I will ask you again: if you were MacPhail, would you trade D-Cab for Jeter straight up?

The reason I am asking is because there has been a lot of talk on this list serve about whether Daniel should/will be traded this year. I am trying to gauge what people think he is worth. Your response seemed to imply that you would trade D-Cab for Jeter in a New York minute. Two other posters had the opposite feeling.

Daniel looks good of late, but he led the league in losses last year. Jeter has a track record and (as much as it pains me to say this) he has the intangibles that are necessary to win championships, in my opinion. I don't know if anyone in the current O's organization has those intangibles because the players simply have not had the opportunity to be tested.

On the other hand, Daniel is 26 years old and is a potential dominating front line starter. He has shown glimpses of this ability in the past and appears to be more consistently displaying such now. The question with Daniel (and all young pitchers) is: Is he Sidney Ponson or Curt Schilling?

Personally, I don't think I would make the deal, but I would be tempted (I would hold onto Cabrera in this hypothetical). I think we, as O's fans, too often overlook a player's flaws and only see the future through Orange colored glasses, which causes us to over-value the players' young, talented, potential. However, in this hypothetical situation, I'm wearing my oranged colored shades.

A second question I have for you is: What would you consider a fair return for Cabrera (and it doesn't have to be from the Yankees)?

I have to agree with Ray. You need a power arm between the soft-tossies.

Otherwise, it might seem like batting practice to the opposing teams. Tell Cabrera it is not a demotion but just for organizing purposes.

After that, he can go back to his original spot if so desired.
