JJ vs. Manny

I just got home from last night’s game. No way I was going to leave Camden Yards until Manny Ramirez finished his at-bat with Jim Johnson.

The commute in morning rush hour was brutal.

Ramirez kept fouling off fastball after fastball, with the occasional curveball mixed in. A few reporters in press row conceded that Johnson wasn’t going to get a fastball past Ramirez. That’s not how the Red Sox’s left fielder was going to be retired with the bases loaded and none out – if he was going to be retired.

Finally, Ramirez bounced Johnson’s 10th pitch – another fastball – to the mound. Johnson threw home for the force, catcher Guillermo Quiroz threw to first for the double play, and Camden Yards exploded.

Johnson got Mike Lowell to fly out, after getting a strike on a 2-0 curveball, and calmly walked off the mound. No fist pump, no chest tap, no primal scream, no look to the heavens. Johnson acted as though he just finished throwing a batting practice session in spring training and was headed to the clubhouse to make a sandwich.

Johnson’s fastball topped out at 97 mph during his battle with Ramirez. That’s more velocity than I remember him having in previous years. Either the gun is fast or Johnson has added a little giddy-up to his heater.

So did you turn up the bill of your cap after George Sherrill recorded the last out? I’ll really be impressed if you did it while watching the game at home – and especially if you did it while watching in bed.

Don’t be in a rush to leave the ballpark after a win. Stay around long enough to check out the video that the Orioles recorded during the last homestand – with Kevin Millar and teammates lip-syncing the Orioles Magic song. It’s priceless.

Millar is shown on an empty field at the beginning, mouthing the words to the opening line. Then he turns toward the dugout, where Sherrill, Adam Jones, Jeremy Guthrie, Dennis Sarfate and Adam Loewen are leaning against the railing wearing foam No. 1 fingers on their hands, moving them in rhythmically to the music. Later, we see Jones “playing” the drums and Loewen on the keyboard.

It reminds me of the days when Rick Dempsey sang “Old Time Rock and Roll,” with Eddie Murray on the drums and Ralph Salvon playing the sax.

Today’s game includes an interesting subplot. Remember how Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia ripped Daniel Cabrera on Sept. 7 after almost taking a fastball to the head.

Allow me to refresh your memory:

“The guy is an idiot," Pedroia said, "I dropped my bat. It kind of freaked me out. I was upset they took him out of the game. He is good to hit. He's 9-15. The guy (stinks).”

Cabrera denied throwing intentionally at Pedroia, saying the ball slipped  out of his hand, but nobody was buying it – least of all Dustin Pedroia.. Cabrera was suspended six games, in part for inviting the entire Red Sox dugout to join him on the mound, in part for almost piercing Pedroia’s ear. It was the type of meltdown that defined Cabrera as much as his 6-foot-9 frame and blazing fastball. But it’s also been removed from his repertoire in 2008.

I'll let my good friend, Associated Press reporter David Ginsburg, tell the story.

Strange stat: Nick Markakis is batting .212 with runners in scoring position, including .167 with less than two outs.

Roch,

Did you know the Orioles are 20-6 when they score more than 2 runs? But they are 0-13 when they score 2 runs or less.

If they added a little more offense to the line-up, they might be a pretty good team.

No way you put Johnson in a starting role -- he is too valuable in his current role.

Like his attitude also -- acts like his done this before and he will do it again. Even with the walks and the run allowed in the 8th inning, his performance was outstanding.

That video was priceless!! The spelling out the O-R-I-O-L-E-S was the crowning touch, I think. It is awesome to see some O's players being comfortable with the concept of *gasp* having fun, again. I pray that they win again today just so I can see the video again.

I'm also super proud of O's fans for showing up again and keeping the BoSox fans at bay! It did my heart good after Scott hit his homerun to hear a "Luuuuuuuuke" loud enough to rival any attempted "Yoooooouk" chant.

On a sidenote: Pedrioa talks real big for such a little man.

Yes I was at the game in the middle of Red Sox Nation (although it wasn't as bad as I thought). I flipped my bill up when Sherrill came in and laughed when Papi got thrown out. The Oriole Magic video at the end was hilarious!!!! Millar singing, "something magic happens..." was classic!

Roch, that performance by Johnson last night was great stuff. Johnson might deserve a shot in the rotation, but with that kind of performance, he owns a spot in the bullpen. As BC Mike said, the game has become a battle of the bullpens, and someone pitching like Johnson has been is highly valuable. Right now, he has more value there than in the rotation.

Jennifer: Ever since the Red Sox won the World Series in ’04, their fans have become insufferable . Gone is the charm of 86 years of suffering and the quaint loyal fandom of Red Sox nation. They are now just obnoxious.

I say if you’re going to an opposing team’s ballpark and wearing their jerseys and hats and cheering for the opposing team, you should be prepared to be pummeled with baseball related verbal assaults by the locals. Try walking into Fenway or Yankee Stadium decked out in Oriole gear and obnoxiously cheering on the O’s and see where that gets you.

I hope the tide has turned for the O’s because Red Sox and Yankees fans have had it far too easy jaunting to Baltimore to visit their teams’ satellite home ballpark, cheering unabated for their teams, and often watching their teams glide to victory (and even having players of those teams talk about how they like coming to Camden Yards). More wins like last night might not stop the droves of these teams’ fans coming to Camden Yards, but it sure makes it unpleasant for them, as it should be.

I think it was the gun. I watched Beckett hit 96 all night and I think Guthrie hit 97. I don't think I believe that one on Guthrie. Apparently MASN is run by the Fox World Series producers.

I don't think I took one breath of air during that bases loaded inning. That was probably one of the best O's games I have ever watched. Sweep anyone????

God I wish I could go today! Let's hope Cabrera throws another past Pedroia, only straight down the strike zone every time!!

Go D-Cab! Show 'em whatcha got!!

Oh and I forgot to give props to Jimmy Johnson for being a super hero last night! With control of his nerves like that you have to wonder if he might not fit well in a closer's role in the future.

RISP is where many Orioles bats go to die....

But it will get better with time.

Dustin Pedroia is the poster boy for smug Bostonion sh*tfacity. Pahdon my french.

Roch-

How far did Luke's homer officially travel? It looked like it went pretty far...

"B" is for traveling to Borneo

385...just reread the post. Thanks Roch for knowing what I wanted, before I knew...

"b" is for baltimore idiot

From Rototimes....

Nolan Reimold, OF, Baltimore Orioles Wednesday 5/14, 1:01 AM CT
Nolan Reimold went 2-for-5 with his fifth homer of the season for Double-A Bowie on Tuesday.

Our View: The former second-round pick is hitting .259-5-15 for Bowie, but he has also shown vastly improved plate discipline compared to last season. Bowie is no sure thing to be a regular in the majors, but the 24-year-old has shown the production in the minors to at least be a fourth outfielder.

4th OFer? I thought the O's had envisioned him as a stud, a starter, not a Jay Payton type....

Roch, weren't you going against traffic from the Yawn to Eldersburg in the AM? :-)

One other thing, could you check & see if Mora has recovered from his Beckettitis.... I bet it's much better today.

The Yawn exploded? The Red Sux fans should not have gotten upset like that with Ramirez, he battled the guy well..... nice Joba reference... I like it!

Let's hope someone reminds Cabrera about those remarks, eh Roch? You should go find Pedroia before the game & ask him if he is going to have a flare up of Moraitis today.... I would think the Red Sux aren't too eager to face this year's version of Cabrera tonight for more than one reason too.

Nick still might be a little PO that he didn't get any kind of raise from the front office after his sensational sophomore season.

Okay, I know I'm being overly chatty (posting) today, but I keep thinking of different things.

Jennifer - At least be thankful you weren't in the upper deck out in left field as it looks like it came to blows up there. Gotta love the classy Sox fan who's getting escorted out by police and gives the double handed one-finger solute. Thankfully, I only had to deal with a rabid Manny who fan who actually thought she could cheer LOUDER for him than I was for George. Needless to say, she got owned!

Okay people...can someone clarify for me how we can, in general, continue to complain about starters not going the distance like they use to yet still question Trembley for sending a starter out after 107 pitches. Seems unfair to want to have it both ways.

I think you all saw last night why Johnson is NOT in the rotation & should not be placed there, at least any time soon.

For all of you that are calling for Trachsel's demise, check out the radar readings when he throws & when J Walker does. Trachsel is a flamethrower compared to Walker. I have noticed in the last several games Walker has pitched he is from 80-83 tops. ONCE he hit 85......ooohhhhh. Last year the guy was throwing upper 80's most of the time. Either he is hurt or has hit the wall really quickly. Throwing in the low 80's he has no margin for error.
I won't even get into Bradford's frisbees.... they top out at 79... 80 when he muscles up. I realize speed isn't everything, BUT at that speed, no one is scared or worried. They both have to be precise too. Therein lies the dilemma , if they miss, they get rocked & if it's just 2 or 3 hitters they face, they look bad & we all vent.

Roch, had a game last night & the guy that knows Clemens was there. Since the Red Sux are in town I thought this might be a good time, plus if any Sux fans read this blog this week, they might enjoy this too.
We had a big lead & the joking & conversation drifted from our game to the Rocket. The man was prolific to say the least & I am not talking about his pitching. The 15 yr old child country singer was but the tip of the iceberg. This guy saw her at games as Clemens guest as far back as '92. Clemens has other worries that might crop up too, like John Daly's ex. She wasn't exactly am ex yet though.... The Piazza thing came up & it seems the Rocket did drill him on purpose, mainly because he , shall we say, dislikes alternate lifestylers....

I won’t go to a home game against the Red Sox anymore. I come to the game to have a good time win or lose. You just can’t enjoy the game when you have to sit with Red Sox fans. So I stay home and watch the game on TV. It was great to hear the O’s fans shout down Sox fans and take back Oriole Park. I recall a time back in the late 70’s or early 80’s at Memorial Stadium. I guess somebody got into the stadium over night and stained or burned into the infield grass “SOX SUX”. I was at one of those games and saw it on TV the next day. The funny thing was that they didn’t clean it up and left it that way for the whole series. Does anyone remember this? I don’t think anyone could get away with that today. It sure would be funny to see Red Sox Nation deal with that today.

I'm going to love watching Cabrera shut that ignoramous up tonight. Pedroia's probably afraid of D-Cab anyways after that incident.

Litmus test for 'New and Improved' Daniel Cabrera. I think he is upto it.

Who are you people kidding trying to defend Ortiz on his final out! he swung his bat threw the zone! If he wasn't standing on top of the plate he wouldn't need to twist out of the way of the inside pitch! 3 times Guthrie had to go inside on those plate crowding monkeys and 3 times after he backed them off he struck them out! If your elbow is over the plate you better learn how to move it out of the way without taking the bat threw the zone!

That video sounds great. The O's should post in on YouTube so hundreds of thousands of O's fans around the world can see it.

Johnson was made for the 'pen. He may even prove to be a great closer option if we trade sherrill.

Roch-- not only is the video pretty classic, I have to comment on the overall music/audio/visual presentation at OPACY. I don't know who they hired, but there is a dramatic difference in the presentation quality. The music is modern, relevant, and fits the game mood. The graphics are solid and picture clarity is great (unlike MASN or even MASN HD which is the lowest quality HD ever). They are no longer playing cuts from Ferris Bueller to inspire us or generated the fake clapping and "noise meters". In sum, love the improvements enough to minimize my complaining about the Hilton.

Oh yeah, Jim Johnson continues to rule... good luck DCAB-- hold it together and show us something!

Just to chime in...

Last spring I wrote a little piece for The Sun discussing how much fun I had sitting with almost all Sox fans during a ST game. And how having some nice baseball chat isn't so bad.

I'm going to stand by that, even after last night (yeah, I was there).

In every group there's a bunch of wannabe's and (pardon) assclowns. But my brothers and I all arrived too late to get Markakis shirts, but we all got them during the game from friendly Sox fans who offered them up. Now, maybe they shouldn't have grabbed them in the first place, but they were all kind about giving them to real O's fans.

I also enjoyed a bunch of good discussion and ribbing with the Sox fans in my section. And, as usual post-game, we all said a friendly "great game, good luck." The only exception was some other fan who walked in on the middle of the 'gg' and told me to enjoy last place.

And yeah, I saw all the other commotion happening in the stands. It's stupid. But there are fans like that from every team - the O's included. The biggest bother to me are the fans who dis my own team in front of me. But, as much as I hate it, I can't get really get angry at Sox fans for cheering on their own team!

Grrr. I want to see that video!!! Roch, get them to post it on the Sun's website. Glad to hear they are finally having fun on this team.

Just to clear up some confusion...... I wasn't saying all Red Sox fans are bad parents. I dont even know how one could get that out of what I said. I meant just that one woman, who may get punched if I ever cross paths with her again.

k is for KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Strikeouts Cabrera! We need lots of them!

Where is TOM D? I miss his posts.

GOOD NEWS! My friend who works in for the Orioles said that Kevin Millar's MAgic video is going to be posted on the Orioles website this week, so keep an eye out! HAHA!

A good way for the O’s to “resolve” the Pedroia thing: have Cabrera display his maturity by not intentionally throwing at Pedroia, but instead having a relief pitcher do it late in the game (if the O’s are securely ahead or behind) to display team solidarity. I’m usually against the whole scene of intentionally throwing at batters, retaliation, and making statements, and perhaps I’m allowing my emotions to get the better of me here.

Of course, as the saying goes, the best revenge is living well. A well pitched game by Cabrera and an O’s win would qualify as such.

It’s still way too early, but, here in mid-May, with the Rays in first place holding the AL’s best record and the O’s one game over .500, you get the feeling that we’re on the cusp of change. Particularly, the era of perpetual AL East dominance by the Yankees and Red Sox is coming to a close, and a more competitive era is approaching if it’s not here already. Again, it’s way too early, and odds are it won’t last this season, but with about one-quarter of the season done, there’s not one but two of the usual doormats being competitive and in the top half of the standings. I find that encouraging. I believe the more that other teams in the division provide a challenge, the more likely Boston and New York will make stupid decisions (bad trades, ill-advised contracts) trying to compensate.

The O's have a 3 step plan to boost ticket sales and TV viwership.

Step 1. Wait until the starting pitcher gets into a difficult jam.

Step 2. Bring Walker in and let him turn a difficult situation into a near hopeless fiasco.

Step 3. Bring Johnson in to douse the flaming inferno.

After seeing this drama play out a couple of times, who wouldn't want to watch the O's? Andy MacPhail is Machiavellian.

Nick Markakis is batting .212 with runners in scoring position, including .167 with less than two outs.

These stats are terrible! We should unload Markakis & Walker.

“The guy is an idiot," Pedroia said, "I dropped my bat. It kind of freaked me out. I was upset they took him out of the game. He is good to hit. He's 9-15. The guy (stinks).”

Very classy, Pedroia. Way to make a case for yourself.

Hey a guy pretending to be bob,, they have openings over at bowmans on harford road for stand up comics, maybe you should apply. Let me see if over the years i have missed something concerning Jamie Walker, did i miss him being nothing but a average pitcher, no that can't be right either because everybody keeps putting him super star status. They keep saying that you can't just release a guy because he has been absolutlely horrible since day 1 of this season, he deserves more time because of his past SUPERSTAR STATUS that his only reserved for a few guys in this league and i don't think he fits in that class. Some guys point out that david ortiz is in a big slump and the Red sox should release him if based upon my theory. David ortiz has 7 home runs is 3 rd in RBI's in the league and if he were on our team his stats would by far led our team. Don't even put jamie walker in the same paragraph with David ORtiz. Jamie walker's only job is to get 1 batter out 1 lefthanded batter out and he can't do that. The only reason no body else is screaming on here is that his dreadful outings haven't cost this team any wins.Where does a guy of his stature in this league get or deserve to keep the loyalty that he has gotten. That part is very confusing to me. I have seen the fans scream to get rid of luis h, who has gotten replaced, Steve t would already be gone if not for his last fair outing. Millar , mora, ramon, huff all should have been gone if we listened to this posts, But Why not Jamie.I will continue my quest until he starts losing games and then we will see how these posts change. Also maybe just maybe the guy has lost his albility, haven't we all seen players that from one year to the next just lose there ability to perform . Why has he automaticly been excluded from that possibility. Only Time will tell my friends and i hope we won't have to wait much longer To READ DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT

CRB-- good post on all accounts! I work with a Boston fan (they aren't all bad) who is actually encouraged that the division appears to be closing up a bit. I had to admit that it looks like Boston will have the edge for a couple of more years but we both think the Rays are likely to roll right by the Yankees very soon. i could see the O's anywhere from 2-5 this season but contending in the next couple as the pitching may be THAT good. Could parody be entering the AL East?

I have been on the "trading for Tex is not intelligent baseball" theme for a while and I am sticking to it. I think many of you are more enamored with the "concept of Texiera in Baltimore" than what the performance of Texiera in Baltimore would be.

Huff is giving you what Texiera is giving the Braves right now with 2 less RBI and two less SBs. He is 28 and has back spasms. He has no speed. He has known mostly losing. And the clincher, his bloated salary would take away flexibility to acquire talent in a number of other positions. Will i cheer for the man if they bring him in, sure! But it just doesn't seem like the right time or place. We do however need to make a few moves via trade or FA to improve the corners--that's a given.

Priceless. I've got to see this video.

Props to the O's fans for drowning the Sawx fans out. This team definitely needs some more offense, but they do battle!

So with the bench shortening seemingly everyday, how much longer do you think it will be until we see someone else from Norfolk called up?

The only good thing about having to watch the O's via NESN's feed was to listen to their misinformation and ignorance about the Orioles. At least they no longer mention the "terrible" trades the O's made over the winter. Eckersley doesn't believe Sherrill "has it", he's not that good. They HATE his hat. A lot. So today at the mall we bought new hats -- flat brimmed just like Sherrill's.

I was there last night as well, and it was fun shutting down the Sox fans (I too saw the dust up in the upper deck).

I have no problem with real Sox fans (but I wish they'd at least remember where they are when they come to Bmore) but I found it funny when one of the beer guys was quizzing the Sox "fans" with Sox trivia and they couldn't answer it.

I agree with the poster that said after the 04 series they became unbearable. It's the bandwagon thing

They just played the 2008 Orioles Magic video on the MASN pre-game show. Classic. I can't wait for that to be posted.

BOB---I agree that things are confusing to you.

JPA----no parody in the AL East, but maybe parity

attended a game at OPACY a few years back vs the sox... went with my (then) boyfriend who thought it would be a great idea to show up in his full yankee regalia. (he's not smart, i know) while we had the usual go-arounds with sox fans (some more fun than others), we had some great conversation with one group of guys who actually knew baseball. i was quite impressed, as my overall view of sox fans is that they really dont know the sport, much less history of their own team (except for "86 years!" and "yankees suck!" which they invariably throw out when you present them with a valid argument of any sort and they aren't smart enough to have a comeback), and after about 45 min of chatting with these guys, some yahoo who was next to us the whole time not saying anything, says to my friend "Yankees suck!" and we laughed and walked away. way to stand there for almost an hour and THEN try and egg on a fight. meh. my ex says "meh, i have broad shoulders, i can handle it..." and sure enough, he found a gaggle of yankee fans to spend the game with.
this was a couple of years ago, where Matos made a spectacular catch robbing Big Sloppi of a home run. and i believe, he (Matos) was released shortly thereafter. arrrgh. good thing i didn't act on that high and buy his jersey that day.

maybe i can still buy a payton jersey. that usually ensures someone's immenent release.

glad to hear that the o's fans showed up for this series. if i get back there this season, i'll buy a round for y'all. :)

"Y" is for yes, i said "y'all"
