The lineup

Scott Moore isn't starting today because manager Dave Trembley didn't want to make any drastic changes in the lineup with a four-game winning streak. But he said Moore will start at third base tomorrow and at second base on Thursday, and he'll play first base on Friday.

Here's the lineup for today:

Brian Roberts - 2B

Melvin Mora - 3B

Nick Markakis - RF

Kevin Millar - 1B

Aubrey Huff - DH

Luke Scott - LF

Ramon Hernandez - C

Adam Jones - CF

Luis Hernandez - SS

Daniel Cabrera - P

A few players took exception with what they perceived as more negative media coverage off yesterday's game, and they weren't shy about expressing their anger. There was some serious venting going on inside the clubhouse before Trembley met with reporters, with reliever Jamie Walker doing most of the talking.

It looks like the Orioles are adopting the ol' us-against-the-world mentality.

Hey, whatever motivates you. It's worked for other teams.

What negative coverage were they talking about? I read only positives!

4 game winning streak by your 1st place Baltimore Orioles!

JPA , more bloggers when they lose , less when they are playing well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I just think we have been promised so much over the past ten years by Peter the Great we are afraid to get too optimistic..................I will say this , it is nice to see some players with heart and energy...........I do see some promise but I also see many empty seats that used to be filled with fans , fans that have been fooled by Peter the Great ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I think the majority of fans now have a wait and see philosophy , the nucleus is there but will Peter the Great spend the dollars necessary to bring in a few good men ( like Tex ) to really make this happen,,,,,,,,,,,,,time will tell.................go O's.........

I was at the markakis silva game. amazing.

Way to call them the worst team in baseball while their in first place, Dan Connolly. Lol. What a knob. I mean, don't call them the worst when you don't know for a fact that they'll be the worst and are, in fact, the best right now.

WHERES YOUR CRYSTAL BALL, DAN? WHERE IS IT?

Yeah, what are they talking about? I haven't read or heard anything negative about the team's performance. The only negative coverage has been about the declining attendance at Camden Yards (and management's blind eye to the reasons for it).

I re-read your game article yesterday and am really having a hard time finding what exactly they could be so angry about. A bunch of sensitive Sally's over there.

Dave: Thanks to that link to the Seattle blog. It’s always interesting to see the writers/fans and their reactions to a team’s fortunes—they seem to be pretty much the same no matter what city it is. Notice a few posts down that the writer talks about how the National Anthem goes here in Baltimore, almost as if it’s a recent thing and hasn’t been going on for decades. You would think perhaps a visiting reporter might do a little investigative work and ask a local reporter, what’s the deal? We know Roch would do that.

Roch, was there local negative coverage after yesterday’s game? I guess I’m missing what the problem was. The “us-against-the-world” mentality might float as long as they’re not making stuff up. I guess going into this season, there was plenty of negative coverage of the O’s and their chances this year. It’s hard to say it wasn’t justified, though, considering the makeup of the team, and it would be great if the O’s used that to play over their heads. But this club has a lot to prove for many people to feel differently about it.

If you play well for a sustained period of time and the media still writes you off, then you have something to be up in arms about. The New York Giants of the past football season and the current Memphis basketball team have both been regularly dismissed even as they make it to their sports’ championships games. Maybe for them, “serious venting” is justified. It’s hard to say so for a baseball team that’s 4-1 (with 157 games to go!) and was regarded as one of the worst teams in baseball coming into the season. For now, I say mute the anger, play it cool, and just keep playing good ball.

I hope they were referring to John Kruk and his BBTN cohorts who all but said the Mariners gave the O's the game, and the O's did NOTHING to win it.

And then how about Buster Olney on Mike n Mike this morning when asked his 3 biggest surprise teams so far. He responded with - Kansas City, Cincinnatti and Tampa Bay (3-2 record)!!!

How can TB be more of a surprise than Baltimore when EVERYONE picked us to finally finish last. No love.

It would be nice if Moore could play SS

The "Us Against the World" approach can actually work. It goes waay against convention, esp. in the marathon pace a baseball season is, but I've seen wilder things happen. There is some actual legitimate signs happening in the minors that sounds eearily familiar from another generation. I love what is happening at Frederick. Bowie has some good stuff too. Some pitchers need to get stretched out there though. I suspect the highly competitive ST kept some pitchers to really get enough reps to get the arm strength up.

If they are talking about ESPN's coverage or should I say lack of I dont blame them.

Go get em Jamie!!

yeah, roch: could you unpack that a little bit? what coverage of yesterday's game are they venting about?

Of course they aren't going to give the O's any respect. I hope they keep this "us against the world" mentality for the entire season.

I was going to ask the same question. It had to be national media.

Negative press? What negative press and what was Walker saying about it?

You have to love this blog. I just read a Ric Flair quote and found out that Luke Scott picked out Iggy and the Stooges as his "at bat" music.

Sweep em, Birds!

I'll steal one of Tom from Tinseltown's signature sign-offs.

NP: Real Cool Time, by the Stooges.

I surely didn't find the coverage here to be very negative, but hey, if it works, let them feel like it's them against the world.

What negative press is this? On sportscenter, the anchor said something like:

"For those of you sick of yankees-red sox, boy, have we got an AL east for you! The BALTIMORE ORIOLES are in first place..."

I guess he sounded a little surprised by it, but I don't know that Id consider that "negative" press....who is their beef with, Roch?

I didn't read any negative comments.... This has Millars footprints all over it.

I second Jordan's comments--what negatives, unless they're talking about national coverage? Locally, it's all looked good. I have to admit, I kept watching ESPN BASEBALL TONIGHT to hear somebody say something about the fact that, oh, the Orioles happen to be alone in FIRST PLACE in the American League East...but nothing. Nada. Not even some snarky remark about "well, it's a week, I don't think ANYBODY is imagining the Orioles will be in first place for long" or something like that. Just nothing. Which I think stinks. I mean, how can you have a baseball program and not mention who is in first place, especially in the sport's toughest division? But no Mariner/O's highlights. Now if I were an Oriole I WOULD be ticked about THAT. But as you say, maybe that's okay. Let them ignore us. It did work before...1989 anybody?--One side note: I think what is making the difference is that the Orioles have finally fielded A TEAM rather than a bunch of guys just playing in the same general vicinity if you gather my meaning. Maybe it won't last forever, but these first few games have been better than anything we experienced in all of 2007.

Hey Roch

You may have already answered this, but I can't find any comments. What is the deal with Billy Rowell? Only one at bat in game one and nothing since??? Did he get hurt again?

Thanks

What negative coverage? I heard Trembley asked some less than smart questions about last year, other than that....

Who vented Roch? I'd like to wish them well....

Agreed, don't change that lineup until they lose.

Hey Roch or anyone else for that matter:

You may have already answered this, but I can't find any comments. What is the deal with Billy Rowell? Only one at bat in game one and nothing since??? Did he get hurt again?

Thanks

Roch, it'd be nice if you could be more specific about the allegedly negative media coverage.

I didn't read or hear anything that I thought was negative either. I wonder what that is about? Like Jordan said though, if it motivates them to keep winning, go for it!

I try to ignore the negative. They've played like a winning team, so I'm happy. Just got free tickets to next Tuesday's Adam Jones T-Shirt night. I swear I have a never ending supply of Orioles T-Shirts. I could probably wall paper my room in O's T-Shirts.

Anyways, I'm listening to the game on the radio. Am I the only one who gets butterflies in their tummy whenever D-Cab is pitching? I hope he's on today!

Get the bullpen ready. Daniel "Bullpen Wrecker" Cabrera's throwing.

Roch-i hope O's not naming you as 'negative media coverage' . you may have a joke here or there , but i never seen you post anything 'negative'.

Perhaps you could provide us a story on that ?

Great start for DCab... SETTLE DOWN!!!!

The negative comments are by the national media's so-called "experts" at ESPN, FOX, and Sports Illustrated that have predicted last place finishes for our beloved Baltimore Orioles. For the rest of us true fans that believe, this team is showing grit, team pride, fundamentals, and potential similar to the 1960 "Baby Birds" that fought their way into a late September pennant race against the powerful New York Yankees. Give 'em a chance. It's Baltimore-against-the-world, folks! Oriole Magic!

OK, Trembley has millions of opportunities to bench scrubs (Millar, Mora and Huff) to make room for Moore, why the heck would he need to sit Roberts to make room for a borderline ML utility player just a week into the season?

I know it's just the beginning of the season, but Cabrera needs to be sent to the minors. He has no idea what to do on the mound.

That's nothing new. Baltimore always gets a bad rap from the media. You can't listen to a game whether it's the Orioles or the Ravens without the announcers or some lame reporter making a negative comment about the sports teams or the city in general. Can't blame the players for being angry. I would be too if I knew what the comment was made. Probably the reporter was from Boston or New York.

It was one paragraph out of a column in today's Sun that otherwise focused on the post-game celebration in the clubhouse.

Is this the offending one from Connolly Roch?

"Here's the deal. This team isn't close to the ones of the late 1970s and early 1980s that helped energize this city. There's still plenty of reason to believe it will be the worst to wear Orioles on a road jersey since 1988."

hey, our light-hitting shortstop is tied for third best batting average, going 3 for 3 in his last three at bats

Scott Moore was drafted into the bigs playing shortstop. Why not give him a shot at SS? He cannot do any worse defensively than who has been there AND he adds a bat.
