Patient at the plate
The Orioles ran Jarrod Washburn's pitch count to 58 through the first two innings, including 38 in the second. They've only scored once, but they're trying to shorten his night.
Luis Hernandez got ahead of Washburn, 3-0, took a strike, fouled off a pitch he should have taken and eventually lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Jay Payton reached on an infield hit to open the inning and Ramon Hernandez also singled. Both runners advanced on Adam Jones' grounder to second.
The Mariners have taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a long home run by Adrian Beltre.
Sam Perlozzo relayed a story today about the first time Erik Bedard spotted him at spring training.
"He said, 'You look a lot more relaxed than the last time I saw you,'" Perlozzo recalled.
So true.
For those of you wondering where the Orioles assigned pitcher Tim Bascom, their fourth-round pick last year, he'll join Single-A Frederick's rotation once he comes off the disabled list. Bascom had back spasms in spring training, and though he's fine, the Orioles are being cautious because of the cold, damp weather. He should be activated within a week.

Good to know about Bascom, Roch. What about Jake Arietta and Pedro Beato?

Well here's something you don't see too often. Trachsel threw 83 pitches tonight, and according to the MLB website box score, 43 of them were balls. Yet he only walked two in 5-2/3 innings. That's what I call getting by on veteran savvy.I don't care how slow he pitches, and whether his fastball can top 80 MPH. If he can pitch like this throughout the season, he's worth every penny he makes.

I don't understand all the pitching changes except that it gives them some work. I would have liked to see Bradford get more than six pitches of work.
I'm loving MLB.com's Gameday. I'm watching the Tides and Orioles games while listening to Joe Angel and Fred Manfra. The only delay now is Gameday's. Joe and Fred or ahead of the counts.
When someone asked yesterday about McCoy, I googled him and saw that he could be a base stealer and dog gone it, he stole second after his walk in the 2nd inning and scored on Eider Torres's single. Adam Stern also has a stolen base.
Garret Olson only gave up one run, 3 hits and 4 k's in 4 innings work, but walked 6.
