More props for Olson

The Rays loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, and Olson escaped the jam by getting a force at home and striking out B.J. Upton on three pitches, the last a 91-mph fastball. They got an infield hit and walk to begin the fifth, and Olson retired the next three batters.

Olson seems more inclined to challenge the Rays instead of doing the kind of nibbling that defined his stint with the club last season. He looks tough off the field. He's been pretty tough on the mound tonight, which the Orioles have been waiting to see.

Olson's fastball is topping out at 91 mph. He just threw 89-mph "heat" to retire Jonny Gomes on a fly ball.

The Orioles lead, 3-0, in the sixth, but the margin could be greater. Eric Hinske made a diving catch in right field to rob Kevin Millar and end the second inning after consecutive run-scoring singles by Melvin Mora and Nick Markakis. And Adam Jones tripped after rounding third base, or he would have scored on Ramon Hernandez's double in the third.

You're telling me that Hinske, that load of flab who got pushed into playing RF part-time only when Glaus and then Delgado forced him out of his more "natural" positions, can make diving catches without setting off land mines somewhere? Could it have been a late read on Millar's shot that looked athletic only in the final nanoseconds of his recovery, the sort of reflex he may've shown once in a blue moon at 3B? To his credit, he was good for 10-15 steals per season in his early, pre-flabby years.

did anyone else see Mora nestle Olson's shoulder right before he left the game? Quite possibly the funniest moment of the season so far for me. Please tell me I'm not the only one who saw that.

Great outing for Olson though. How about this as our rotation by the end of June?

Guthrie, Cabrera, Burres, Olson, Albers.

what are the orioles coaches doing to work on my son's base running? he's made many mistakes this year, and even though I love him, I'm a little embarrassed by what i'm seeing.

Roch...100 pitches and his forst start - why push the envelope with olson? Trembley sometimes really annoys me. Bierd should have started the inning and let Olson leave with no runs agains and let Bierd have a fresh start - not sure it would have mattered as he doesn't seem to have it. Olson was losing it in the 6th and there was no reason to do that when you carry an extra pitcher.

Honestly... Bierd annoys me and right now I'm not happy with Walker being up right now. If we lose this game, I will be pissed. This is Olson's game to win. He gave the team an easy game and they could blow it.......

You better hope for a win or I'll be in a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MOOD tomorrow!

Bradford is so ineffective when it really matters. How many times must we watch him ignite a rally for the opposition. Great performance by Olson-- hope the pen doesn't blow it for him!

Good job starters and offense!

The only good news about the birds base running escapades is that I have had a television pilot accepted by a major network. In the first episode , "our two baserunning buddies go wild when Juan's arthritis acts up".

It's called " Alias Huff and Jones"

Still need to cast the leads.

Kurt Birkins???? When did he leave the O's system? I liked him but he, like most of the O's young pitchers, walked too many batters.

1st place by percentage points!

Garrett Olson looks like a completely different pitcher than last year. He was down in the strike zone with fast balls and threw enough off speed pitches to keep them off balance. Looks like he doesn't want to go back to Norfolk,

I don't remember who said it, but back in spring training I was saying that I'd like to have Bob McCrory with the Orioles and whoever you are said he'd never be up in the majors this year.
Well ha smart person, Bob has arrived or I slept a whole year in 24 hours.
Now I'm feeling good about 2008.

As Olson was being taken out and walking off the hill, why does MASN cut to Randor coming in? I mean, I know why, but why not let us take a look at how the kid behaves after pitching his best game in the majors. Is he proud? Is he calm? Is he still hungry for more, or is he spent and happy to be out of the game.

In my opinion MASN cut to the wrong scene there, but I ain't complainin' - we hung on and won!!!!

Another question:

Is Sherrill the perfect trading chip or our closer for the 2010 World Series? I really like him, that's for sure...

15-11. The pressure never stops.

Im not sure what the deal is being that I live in Tampa and I get about 95% of my info on the O's thru the Baltimore sun.. Why does it seem to me that Trembley keeps his starters in waay too long ?? Has he given a reason on talk show ? or interview cus I know i can't be the only one ask'n this question. I'm try'n to figure out why does he carry an extra pitcher if he's not gonna use them. I know we're come'n off the long Chicago series but still he's been do'n this quite a bit this year.. It sure is good hear'n the Rays T.V anouncers say'n good things about our young O's team for a change.. The people hear in Tampa are pretty exicted too though about the young Rays.. The O's are look'n great I know its early but like I said in these forums before... This could be a "Why not" season for the O's

I also saw Mora nestle Olson's shoulder. Don't really know what it was about.

And I don't know if that's actually Adam Jones's mom, but here's my two cents. With this only being his second month in the majors (counting last year's call-up with Seattle), and only first month with the O's, he seems to be getting a pass on some of his failings, considering his talent and the fact that he's performed well generally.

Tonight he fell rounding third, last night he got trapped off third partly by
Samuel's fault. At the plate he swings through an awful lot of pitches, but has also hit well in spots. I wonder if Crowley is telling him his bat is too active before the pitch, or that he should lower his hands and not hold the bat so far behind his shoulder, so as to shorten his swing.

Bill, it was Roch who said McCrory would be up at some early point in the year and would, and I think I'm quoting Roch pretty closely, be the story of the year.

I can live with that.

I'm just a little puzzled as to how Luis had a rough fielding stretch, our cleanup hitter isn't cleaning up too much (tonight was just his 12th rbi), and we're still winning and looking pretty good. With Luis having a shaky stretch defensively, does this mean Tejada's defensive ugliness wasn't really the reason we sucked last year? Does it mean the bullpen was the actual reason?

Olson's walk total is still up there, but I'm definitely seeing improvement over last year.

I'm with you, Roch...with a 6-run cushion, I would have let Olson face Crawford and try to escape the jam in the seventh. But for once, I was not upset with Trembley giving a starter the hook...it's Olson's first start, Trembley tried to let him go one more and it didn't work out.

But I love the people who get down on a guy for one or two bad appearances. Bierd didnt give up a run in his first 11 innings, I believe...the dude is entitled to a rough outing.

Bradford's ERA is south of 2.50, and although I'm not sold on Walker either, he's been getting the job done lately, save for the Ichiro HR.

All in all, no complaints...ESPECIALLY now that we've finally shed Aquino :D

And if anything, Trembley has had too quick of a hook with his starters.

A couple times he took Trachsel out with fewer than 90 pitches, when Trachsel was in the middle of quality starts...and he should have left Cabrera in longer in that Seattle game.

I'm glad to see him giving starters more time in the hill. I'm sure they'll appreciate it, and as a result, tell him if they're gassed and need to come out.
