Later today

So what's the next humiliation for Roger Clemens? A point-shaving scandal? Dog fighting? He hires Isiah Thomas to run his NBA franchise?

We shouldn't be lacking for news today at Camden Yards. For example:

1. How will the Orioles make room on their 25-man roster for pitcher Garrett Olson, who starts tonight's series opener against Tampa Bay? Do they option infielder Eider Torres? Do they designate reliever Greg Aquino? Or is it none of the above?

2. We're expected to learn the results of Adam Loewen's MRI and CT scan. Is this a four to six weeks thing, or is the discomfort in his left elbow and forearm much more serious?

3. Who starts tomorrow's game? It was supposed to be Jim Johnson, but he threw two innings yesterday. Matt Albers wasn't particularly sharp on the road trip, but he'd seem to have the edge. We'll find out.

4. When will the Orioles and White Sox resume their suspended game? And do the rules allow Aubrey Huff to be ejected twice?

Stick around. It should be interesting.

Meanwhile, I'm bringing my umbrella and a pair of rubber boots. Maybe a life raft, too.

And that's just in case the press box floods again.

Don't forget the ESPN Zone is hosting another Orioles Q&A tomorrow, beginning at noon. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Luke Scott will take your questions. Ask him about the notebook he keeps in the dugout during games. Maybe he'll bring it with him.

The event includes ticket giveaways, trivia and autograph signings. Enjoy.

The Zone hosted the first Q&A with Adam Jones on April 17, and he had the game-winning single later that night.

Aquino becomes this year's Steve Kline. They can't go back to a 13-man staff can they? I think Albers has to get the call tomorrow. This will be an interesting series. Do we continue to hold our own, or begin the inevitible slide below .500 and into last place. Here's hoping we continue to hold on for awhile. Either way it's been fun and we have gotten a glimpse of what can and hopefully will be.

Roch, Sorry to say that I'll hopefully be at the Fredrick Keys game in Wilmington, DE at 11:00 am. tomorrow.
If I get there early enough, I'll try and get some quotes from Matt Weiters, Billy Rowell, etc. I don't want to ask the same old clique questions, if I get to say anything to them at all.

stop hating on my man thorne. that guy is one of the best in biz. so much better than Buck Martinez.

HUFF IS DROOPY GROSS FACE.

SAMUEL NEEDS TO BE FIRED!

aubrey was safe!

FREE AUBREY HUFF!

bwandon has to make that throw. i know, i know, it was wet.

has anybody notice how ... interesting ... out team is this year? yeah. that's the word. very hard to work when there's a game in progress.

They could complete the game on Monday, June 23rd, if the White Sox would agree with it, an open date for both teams, and both would be in Chicago.

On June 22nd, the Cubs host the White Sox to complete that series, before heading to L.A. on June 24th to play the Dodgers.

On June 22nd, the O's play in Milwaukee to complete that series, before heading to Chicago on June 24th to play the Cubs. They would probably arrive on June 23rd.

The only problem is that Monday is a getaway day for the White Sox to travel to L.A., but the makeup of the suspended game shouldn't last too long.

OH! I got it, to make room for Olson, we can release Trachsel! At best he's a good pitcher who has quality starts, at worst he mimics Trachsel!

I'm a genius, somebody tell the front office to give me a call.

Horrible, horrible conditions yesterday. I'll give Fahey a pass on the soaked ball he threw, but not Samuel for waving in A.ones.

Oh for the Florida weather during spring training. Speaking of Florida, any info on the O's moving to Vero Beach next spring Roch?

Add me to the list of Gary Thorne detractors. Did anyone catch his remark about Ramon's "game-winning HR" before the bottom of the 11th got underway? At least Palmer was quick to correct him. A few pitches later, you guessed it, Uribe ties the game on a ball that's still in orbit. Nice jinx Gary!

As for the roster, Aquino should be sent down to make room for Olson. In addition, Fahey and Hernandez should both be moved for Cintron and Bynum when ready. I hope Loewen's injury isn't bad because I really feel for the guy. Albers should get the start on Wednesday, as Johnson has been thriving in his long reliever role. I think Albers has earned it too.

The game would have ended had Juan Samuel not waved Adam Jones home. What is this guy thinking!

My guess is that we play the remainder of the suspended game on Aug 25. Now what if the games goes to the 22nd inning? or longer? I believe we used everyone on the bench and plenty of pitchers.

BobbyWoontz,

I spent most of yesterday hoping for a rainout. I'm holding tix in Milwaukee for Sunday's O's-Brewers game and at Wrigley for Tuesday's O's-Cubs game. Maybe they will finish on Monday, open the gates for free? I'll be in Chicago, would love to "drop in"!

Scandal? I think they should designate Aquino for assignment. Hopefully no one will claim him, and they can send him to Norfolk, if he would agree.

The Orioles need to COMPLETELY shut Loewen down for a while, while he's still somewhat "young". The nature of his injuries, in his THROWING arm, are very alarming. Otherwise, they're all playing with a can of gasoline and a blow torch. I can just about guarantee that if he / they never let this thing heal properly, he'll be an after-thought by 2010. Think Kerry Wood, but with about 65 less wins...

Did anyone actually see Samuel wave Jones on? I believe he made a normal turn but had no traction on the mud to get back.Maybe he shouldn't have, but scapegoating the coach solves nothing.

If you will recall, I pointed out that Clemens was a dirtbag back when the Congressional Hearings were going on. I elaborated about his womanizing history that a friend had told me about. The guy knows him well & has socialized with him over the last 20 years. McCready is just one of many, the tip of the Iceberg. That same person laughed when I asked him if the roids & Hgh rumors were true. he said he knew that Clemens & Pettitte were using, he had even worked out with them both in Houston.
Clemens is a lair, a phony, & if you ask me, more of a plight on baseball than Rose. If Rose is denied, Clemens should be also. Rose was just a redneck that had a gambling problem & he was a player of the ladies too, but he was not as sinister or devious as Clemens. Clemens cheated on the game as well as his wife.

Samuel makes Treblehorn look good. The guy has horrible split second decision making skills.

Albers starts, not Johnson. Cut Aquino, hope he passes waivers, send him to AAA.

The only thing I can think of to explain Samuel waving Jones on is that he was thinking if the SS picks up the ball and attempts a throw to first then Jones with a full head of steam could have a good chance of making it home with the defense having two chances to muff a throw or catch with a wet ball. As it was, the SS couldn't pick up the ball and then was smart enough to not throw it but look instead to the runner. I was so upset that Jones was out that I walked away from the TV for a while and did not see the replays or listen to the discussion. I was just thinking to myself, "That's a rookie mistake to get so far off base to get picked off like that." If he was listening to his coach though, then it's all on the coach.

Yes, according to rule 4.12 the game should be resumed Aug 25, in Baltimore, before the start of that night's game.

I can't find a box score, so I can't generate a list of names, but anybody who played in the game and was removed cannot play in the suspended game. So Huff, Quiroz, any picture who was used and any other position player who was in and out, cannot play in the 12th+ inning. However, anyone not on last night's roster who is on the Aug 25 (or whenever) roster CAN play. (So that if we make a trade with the White Sox between now and then, someone could indeed play for both teams in the same game.)

Hey Roch, did you see S. Moore's line from last night, 3-3 with a HR, 2B, 2BBs and 2RBIs... maybe he pulled a Jamie Walker and responded to your negative comments about him being in a slump.

To be honest, I think our base coaching has been suspect all year..not just this Samuel call yesterday.

How many times have we been picked off? (or "caught stealing" because of a pick off?)

Probably a dozen already. In 25 full games...that is a crazy stat. Its not just young runners.. Mora was victim yesterday.

Somebody needs to make this guys take smaller leads, or yell "BACK!" sooner..or something. I'm tired of getting our much needed runners picked off.

My bet is they don't resume it, thats what I am hoping for anyway. Odds are very good that neither the O's nor the White Sox playoff chances will hinge upon this game.

I for one have no problem at all with this game going into the record books as a tie. I just don't see the results of this game being worth the amount of hassle it will take between the teams to finish it.

If we option anyone to the minors I really hope it is Brandon Fahey... he is just awful

We would be a better team if Trachsel, Aquino, Luis, & Fahey were all gone. Bring up Cintron, Bynum, and any other pitcher(s)--anyone!

I know I'm going to regret saying this and I'm sure I'll get a few comments but I'm starting to feel bad for Roger Clemens. I mean seriously, hasn't he gone through enough already. It's bad enough his entire baseball career has been ruined, but to add an affair with a then 15 year old country singer is just too much. If it's true... yes its gross, but really hasn't he suffered enough embarassment for the year?

At least wait until next year to throw something else out there. Usually I would have no remorse for someone like him, but I must be in a good mood today or something...

Oh and AUBREY WAS SAFE!

Hey Roch:

WHat is Trembley thinking pitching Johnson when he was supposed to start on Wednesday? Johnson needs to be in the starting rotation and Olson does to, in place of Trachsel! All Trachsel is doing is taking up innings that one of the young pitchers could benefit from. Put him on the Jay Gibbons plan!!! See ya.

Roch,

Here is another interesting question. If they finish this game in August, and Eider Torres is not on the roster at that time (which I am assuming will be the case) who hits in his spot? The bench was empty because of Huffs ejection, and he was all that was left...

Thanks jds ... maybe we can pry Quinton from the Sox, he kills is.

Jennifer, I never thought I would see the say when anyone feels sorry for Roger Clemens. Other than himself anyways...

OK. I admit this is a wacky question, but hear me out.
Let's say they sked the resumption of the game for some day in August. Between now and then, various roster changes occur on both sides via trade and promotions of players from the minors.
1) Let's say, for example, that somebody who was in Bowie on Monday is promoted in a month and is still on the team when the date of resumption arrives. Can he play for the Orioles?
2) What if the Orioles and Sox make a trade? Could the same person theoretically play for both teams in the same game?
3) Is it possible for either team to play more than 25 guys in this game because of these various, hypothetical roster changes?

i agree w/ what jack said above -- that maybe Samuel was trying to get jones to score if the SS had thrown the ball to 1st. But to answer the other question-- YES, samuel DEFINITELY was waving him around third -- it was clear as could be on the replay, and no, Palmer & Thorne never discussed that as they watched the replays over & over.

Have another CUSTARD DOUG---Thorne and Buck Martinez have two different jobs.one is a play by play man (Thorne) and the other is a color commentator(Martinez). As to Thorne being one of the best in the biz, exactly what biz are you referring to it certainly is not baseball.

I, for one, would like to see the Orioles keep Eider Torres on the roster, but I don't see where they'd play him. He's a definite improvement over either Brandon Fahey or Luis Hernandez at the plate and on the bases, although not as good defensively as those two (he's better at second than at short).

He'd be an adequate replacement for Brian Roberts, should the latter get traded, because Torres has hit throughout his professional career, albeit with less power than B-Rob.

Daniel Cabrera's performance yesterday was really bad as far as control, but I'm wondering how much the cold, windy, rainy conditions factored into that. (I think he's at a point in his development where it doesn't take a lot to throw him out of kilter.) Nevertheless, he made a number of big pitches when he had to, and I don't think the old D-Cab could have struggled so mightily with his command and still left the game giving up only a pair of runs.

I am not defending Samuel nor am I burying him...but earlier in the season there was that game against Seattle at Camden when Brian Roberts got nailed at home for the first out of the inning. The old rule of thumb is NEVER the first out at third base.

Roch, could you ask Tremblay if Samuel has been told in no uncertain terms to be aggressive ? On a scoring challenged team, this is often the strategy.

When these things don't work out , it is infuriating. Remember Mora running through signs last year and then the Huff debacle in Seattle. This is all symptomatic of an agressive approach that will make you look like a fool from time to time. I personally think the instructions should be "aggressive with a two out of three chance of success"

Jennifer, don't feel bad for Clemens. He knew what he was doing & might now get what he deserves. This, of many, was not just one time or a brief period of time, it supposedly went on for 10-15 years! Same for the roids & Hgh. He doesn't think the rules apply to him. Don't feel bad for that guy.

Jennifer - In reference to your Clemens blog , you must be having a sunny day ! haha . you are one of very fewest folks , who feel compassion for Mr. Clemens . Whether he deserves the negative fall out /repercussions or not , its not up to us . You ever heard of old saying 'what goes around comes around' ? That seems to be classic proof . God help his family .

Are we ready to watch O's sting the Rays?

If the Orioles get another rain delay , why dont they play "Rain' by the Beatles ? The song might jinx the weather for a change .

Go O's

I'd keep Johnson where he is-middle relief. He's effective there and could be another Taveras-or Rodrigo Lopez(who balked at such a role).
I'd also get rid of both Aquino and Trachsel but I'm afraid Trachsel will likely be around awhile longer.
We are playing decent ball but let's make better use of the few weaponds we have by shaking up the order. Move Millar and Huff down and hit Hernandez and Jones higher in the order.
I really believe that we can continue to surprise teams if we can squeeze out 6-7 innings from our starters and turn things over to our vastly improved 'pen. I'm looking forward to the Rays series and 2of 3 would be nice!

I made a comment a while back that there is a difference between aggressive baserunning and dumb baserunning, the latter defined by a lack of attention to situational baseball. I am worried that Trembley (via Samuel) is pigeon-holing himself into a manager who sends runners all the time. It makes it pretty easy to call pitch-outs, pickoffs or throwing through to a base when you know what a team's tendencies are. Hence, the rediculous number of baserunners being picked off or thrown out. Don't get me wrong, I love the aggressive approach, but it seems that only some of the guys are capable of really taking advantage of it (not Jones, LHernandez, or Mora). I think BRob, Payton, and Markakis can handle the green light. The rest are not really fast enough to be in the conversation.

Anyway, our middle of the lineup will clearly be the death of us this year. Millar, Huff, and Hernandez are rally killers. They have shown a little pop here and there, but never seem to sustain that big inning. 2-3 runs a night is going to make for a long summer. But we knew that coming in. I'd take remotely close to .500 with this lineup.

Looking forward to the young guns getting some PT.

i have the mlb package on direct tv. the orioles with thorne and palmer, the yankees and the red sox have the best tv broadcasters. you wouldn't belive how bad some of the others are like tampa bay and k.c. as a matter of fact most of the others are no better than fair. mel proctor and lowenstein were the best.

oh well we are leading the league in stolen bases so that shows our aggression, but we do need to cut down on the pickoffs...but part of the price we pay for being so aggressive....I'll take it

I'll answer will more for you, Roch.

Trembley was thinking that it was the bottom of the 9th in a tie game..one that we wanted to win. You DEFINITELY pitch Johnson in that situation..there is no other option.

In a tie game late, you go to your pitcher that is the most "lights out." You may say that's Sherrill; however, when you are the visitors you save your closer for the save in extra innings (which DT did in the 11th).

So that leaves: Albers, Aquino, Bierd, and Johnson (The rest all pitched). Which one of those do you think is going to hold Chicago for a few innings, long enough to take the lead?

Obviously the one with 11 innings straight of shutout ball. And, for what its worth, it was the right decision since Johnson shut them down..not Trembley's fault Sherrill finally blew one.

Let Trachsel go! He's slow and sucks. Give one of our young arms a chance. What would we lose?

damn, you miss one game on tv and you feel like you don't even know the team.

Samuel screwed up? Say it ain't so. Is it raining in B'more? I can't take another rainout. This is a really rough stretch but a couple wins would help.

Let's go Olson. Don't nibble to much. Either you get hitters out or the earn their way on. No big deal. Just trust yourself and we are due to give someone some run support.

To get back to you Gary Thorne haters. Do you listen to Jim Palmer? He is muy terrible. His stories turn into 4 stories that never end. He somehow has time to talk to every single player before each game, on both teams. And he lets you know this. Last season he must have told the viewers that Leo Mazzone was our pitching coach at least 50 times a game.

Hey Roch,

Wondering if you could tell me what Jim Hoey's status is?

Thanks!

Roch,

Any idea what Jay Gibbons has been doing since he was released? Did he hang up his cleats or is he still trying to prove he has something left in the tank?

Joe C- I saw the play, and couldn't figure out why jones rounded the way he did, until I saw re-play and Samuel was windmilling like crazy! Jones had his back to the play, and had to rely solely on his coach- who let him- and the team down.

Thorne is OK & is never hurting for work so I'll assume he might be pretty good at what he does...
Palmer is in love with Palmer. He always digresses to what he did when, how he did it, etc. He has gotten better the last 2 years, but he is still a huge egomaniac in need of attention. I prefer Martinez & even Dempsey over Palmer.
If someone needs to go it's not Thorne...

Oh trust me, Clemens deserves whatever punishment he gets, but in the back of my mind I'm just like "Wow, this guy seriously can't catch a break." I'm really not asking people to go easy on him, I'm just amazed at the whole situation.

Everything he has done and lied about deserves punishment.... but can't the poor guy catch a break. Too much crap piled on at once. I mean at least give him a couple months to recover from his last embarassment before throwing out the next.

Trust me, I'm not saying he's innocent or deserves a second chance. It just sucks all around. Let's just say I'd hate to be him.

One of the many problems with Clemens , and I am a huge fan of his on the field, is that if the stuff with Mcready is true he is a rapist. 28 + 15 equals serious jail time and registration as a sex offender in Texas, Boston, or Nashville.

I like to focus on what these guys do on teh field, but I also know that people that cheat off the field and live like jerks are likely to cheat on the field. All of these guys need to be held accountable for the way they act - when teachers making 40K a year get fired because they have questionable content on their facebook pages (washingtonpost.com yesterday) and Millionaires' running around on wives and girlfriends is ignored by sportswriters because it is baseball culture something is seriously screwed up in this country.

bas--he's getting paid millions of dollars to sit on his a$$, that's what he's doing. If Barry Bonds can't get a job, do you really think Jay Gibbons has a shot?
