In a suspended state
If a tie is like kissing your sister, what exactly is a suspended game?
Does it involve a man-hug and a distant cousin?
As Jim Palmer pointed out afterward on MASN's post-suspended-game show, the Orioles can take great satisfaction in avoiding a loss today. They don't have a win to show for their efforts - not to mention their patience while waiting out two rain delays - but they didn't lose after trailing by a run going into the ninth inning.
The White Sox brought out their closer. The game was supposed to end in regulation.
Of course, the Orioles did the same in the 11th, but I digress...
As much as I hated to see that tarp come on the field again, the umpires had no choice. The infield dirt had turned into a mudslide. Routine plays became almost impossible. There's no way Brandon Fahey makes a wide throw in the 11th in normal conditions, but the ball was impossible to grip once it soaked up five gallons of water.
For those of you keeping score at home, that's three postponements and a suspended game. And we aren't through April yet.
Meanwhile, this team needs more pop from its bench - a sentence that was repeated many times in this same blog last season. But who comes up? It can't be Scott Moore or Mike Costanzo until they get hot.

My wish for the next time the boys hit the road...that they can make the whole 10 games without a rain out, rain delay or double header. It would be nice to see what kind of road team they are under normal circumstances. That being said they come home 3-3 (ironic, no?) still two games above .500.
While the Rays have been a hot ticket in the past week the O's are also coming home to where they've been quite prosperous themselves. Should prove to be a good series.

I can't wait to see the us play in some snow this summer...er, wait...wrong sport...

Oscar Salazar, perhaps?
Posted by: Mike | April 28, 2008 9:20 PM
As far as who to bring up for the bench, Salazar isn't doing badly at Norfolk, and interleague play is only a couple weeks away. Amazing that three primarily-3Bmen on the roster down there, all of whom have a shot with the big club, can all get their time in. As for the earlier riffs on Ponson, does anyone else think that the Rangers were more desperate than wise in calling him up after only two out of four quality starts down in Oklahoma City? Yes, he did well vs. the Twins on Saturday, but I'm just waiting for his Sidness to return to true form.

A suspended game is like kissing your brother. And I'll try not to take offense to that remark!
Love,
Your sister

KP, Ryan Hannaman was not only the third guy in the Ponson deal, but he was considered a "top pitching prospect for the Orioles system," according to sportsblotter.blogspot.com/2003.
Not sure where he is now, but Rocky Mountain News on July 28, 2006, said "Ryan Hannaman was the victim of multiple injuries."
So the Ponson deal turned out to be a bust for everybody I guess.

As of right now there is NO chance that Fahey or his partner at short will be here. One will go and never return . Tike will never see the Yards again. Roberts, Millar and Liz will be traded. Fred Bynam will have to fill in the best he can. NEXT YEAR WE WILL ROLL!!

Samuel is killing us. And both Palmer and the dunce Thorne ignored the reason Jones was caught rounding third. How many poor decisions by the third base coach can Trembley and the FO continue to accept? Samuel must go!
Thorne must go as well. I for one am sick of hearing him call our guys by the wrong name. And how much longer do we have to listen to him be more excited about strong plays and homeruns delivered by our opponents than for our Orioles. I don't mind the announcers complimenting the opponents, but Thorne goes overboard. If you didn't know better, you'd think he was the team announcer for the opponent.
Samuel and Thorne must go!

I have no idea how a suspended- after- 11 inning game- not counting the 2+ hour delay is supposed to be finished fairly. I have an idea -- give both teams a win and be done with it.
I fear the Orioles will end up having to play late season make-up games that will take away the few days off they'll hhave.

I'd say Moore is starting to get hot after going 3-3 with a 2B and a HR...

Roch, I can't keep up with your blogs after a two day hiatus.
You forgot to mention in your REO Speedwagon blog, that in addition to Jeremy and Ramon's songs, that Trembley would do the cover of REO's, 1976 song, "Our Time Is Gonna Come" and Garrett Olson is singing "In My Dreams" from the rock group's 1987 Life As We Know It.
For the record, I myself, love the 1980 REO Speedwagon vinyl record, Hi Infidelity. It one of my favorite albums of all-time. Rock On!

Dylan, Thanks for the Onion, Jim Anchower column about his REO Speedwagon concert. I hadn't laughed that much in a long time. I laughed so hard my eyes watered. That was awesome.

i think this team needs more pop from the starting lineup, but i digress....

I was at the game today. Most miserable baseball weather I've ever experienced.
Why does Trembley bring in Bradford in the 7th to face Konerko, when he is 4 for 8 with a HR against Bradford?
Also, I agree about Samuel being the cause of Jones being caught off third. I was sitting right behind 3rd base dugout and Samuel was waiving Jones on instead of signaling to stay on the base.

Someone in a recent thread said if the O's go .500 on this trip, we should have a parade down Baltimore Street. And so we did. 3-3-1.
Agree with the Juan Samuel criticism. Replay clearly shows Samuel giving Adam the wave to go home. Even if the arm waving only meant to hurry up and come INTO third, one can see the obvious confusion it caused Jones. Only problem is, we don't know what he actually told Jones that we couldn't hear.
Also agree with the Thorne criticism. Although his work is intelligent and humorous, he called Ramon "martinez" and then said with a laugh, "Did you know Ramon's MIDDLE NAME is Martinez?" A couple of times recently, he referred to the other team in a sentence when he meant the O's. I guess that comes from calling a number of games in other cities. But, that's true of any announcer.

Edhead, I appreciate your criticism of tv play-by-play on MASN, but for those of us afar watching the Os via MLB.TV (which is startlingly good this year by the way - what a pleasant surprise), we can only envy you the team of Thorne and Palmer. The Chicago south side broadcast team were not only ridiculous homers (as noted by other posters), but were so pathetic as to be only likened to unwelcome guests crashing an afternoon barbeque - spouting useless cliches and ignorant assessments, and then cheering gratingly when they see even the possibility of hit by their team (on tv in the anology of course), and then cheering in the most annoying way possible. Any of you who are following the Os in this way MUST know what I am talking about. Forgive my rant, notice how scrappy this team is even while displaying its obvious holes and flaws... and thanks to Roch and all of you who post so often, and often well about the state of the team that I have chosen to stick with over many travels and years from my Baltimore home - go Os!

Roch—A suspended game is like a fantasy. You can imagine all sorts of things. Like this: the game will be completed on August 25th in Baltimore as a prelude to that night’s regularly scheduled game. Nick Markakis will win the game in the 13th inning (God only knows what will happen in the 12th to keep it tied) when he lines a hit to left to score Brian Roberts.
Brian Roberts? Won’t he then be with the Cubs?
Not in my universe of suspended game fantasy.

As a Rutgers guy who has had the pleasure of watching Ray Rice churn and gut his way for yardage over the past 3 seasons, I can assert that he will be one terrific Raven.
My oldest son and I let out wild hollers when his name scrolled across the TV screen as the Ravens' 2nd round choice.
We called this one a while back. When Craig Ver Steeg left Rutgers as the running backs coach to join the Ravens.
And Purple will look just right on Ray, too. That's the color he wore in high school as a star for New Rochelle.
At Rutgers, the alliteration was Rutgers' Ray Rice. Now, it's Ravens' Ray Rice. From the Scarlet R to the Purple R.
Go get em, Ray!

I agree Juan Samuel has been awful this year.
Posted by: j | April 29, 2008 2:46 AM
Right on the money Edhead. Worse than Samuel waiving Jones around while the shortstop is holding the ball with no play at first is idiot Thorne and even Palmer missing it. Thorne is just a voice, but I expect more from Palmer. John Miller wouldn't have missed that.

I totally disagree with the assessment of Palmer and Thorne. Though you may not be a fan of his personality, his knowledge of the game is superior to most. Yesterday was no exception.
Palmer made it clear that Huff needed not get thrown out due to the short bench the Orioles had. Excellent point.
Palmer also said that Dennis Sarfate would be best served to throw an 0-2 curveball on the outerhalf. He pointed to the fact that since the hitter had not seen his curveball so far, it would get the hitter on his front foot, roll over on the pitch, and possibly ground into a double play. The NEXT pitch produced just that. Amazing.
And how many people new that if you foul off a squeeze attempt, and the catcher catches it, it is still a live ball. Palmer new immediately.
Excellent broadcasting in my opinion!
Go O's
