Going in the right direction

Forget .500. Why think about .500? Who said anything about .500? We don't need no stinkin' .500.

Nice little comeback at the Yard tonight, and it was full of interesting sub-plots.

How about the bench being emptied and Melvin Mora having to play shortstop, Aubrey Huff replacing him at third base and the Orioles losing their designated hitter?

As they mounted another rally in the 10th inning, the pitcher's spot was approaching. But closer George Sherrill wouldn't have batted. Manager Dave Trembley was getting Steve Trachsel and Adam Loewen ready in the indoor cage. He wanted experience in that situation, and Trachsel has done plenty of hitting in the National League. Loewen, meanwhile, would have been drafted as a hitter by some other organizations if the Orioles hadn't taken him with the fourth pick in 2002.

We never got that far. Adam Jones lined a single to left to score Kevin Millar for a thrilling 6-5 victory.

"We might be outmanned from the standpoint of position players," Trembley said, "but we certainly are not going to back down."

We shouldn't forget that nine-pitch at-bat for Luke Scott that ended with a walk, after Millar had  led off with a walk of his own. Aubrey Huff almost ended the game, but his line drive to left field didn't quite carry enough.

No matter. The Orioles weren't going to be denied. They already rallied from 5-2 down in the eighth, scoring once in the bottom half after Kevin Millar struck out and reached first base on catcher A.J. Pierzynski's error. He scored on Scott's double, which gave you the feeling that something special was going to happen.

Millar should have been the final out, but not on this night.

Not for a team that had no interest in .500.

Roch--You can keep telling us about "Going in the right direction" but actually Adam Jones' game-winning hit went in the left direction.

Happy Birthday (43 years old), Craig Worthington.

Last year Huff started hitting after he straightened up his stance. It looks to me like he's gone back down into more of a crouch. Stand up, Aubrey!

Woo-hoo! I admit that I gave up when it was 5-2. Huge win! Great comeback!

Wow! Its amazing what a little youth can do for a club. I just hope this doesnt stop Angelos from further letting McPhail rebuild. This is almost scary because we are heading in the right direction in so many ways. If we are even in the slightest (4-5 games out) bit of contention come july what will Angelos say about rebuilding then? It will be the worst possible thing to half@$$ this thing now. We have to finish rebuilding. I love watching the O's come from behind and compete like they are doing but this can't stop them from trading away people like Luke Scott, Sherrill, Huff, Roberts. I am a huge "Luuuuuuuuke fan I have been since he was with the Astros, but he isnt the answer. I wish he was about 4 years younger but at age 30 he is more valuable if he can put up big numbers and be trade bait. Please tell me we are still rebuilding thats all I want. I want to see a super star team come 2010!

Cannot, not love the fire in this team!!!!!!!!

marshall413 -- You refer to the need to keep rebuilding, and I couldn't agree more, but only when the playoffs and World Series are over. After all, we don't want the Orioles to have any distractions when their full and undivided attention should be on playing their best baseball!

David Sturgill -- You exclaim,"Cannot, not love the fire in this team!!!!!!!!" You know, of course, that you used a double negative, which is grammatically incorrect. Normally, I'd probably make an issue of it, but I'm giving you a free pass this time, because it's not right not to back the never-say-die O's!!!!! Yankees next? Bring 'em on!

I can see the direction of this rebuilding program related to the pitching staff, but for the life of me please explain where we are going to get any position players. I know our outfield seems set for a long long time , and outside of weiters coming up to catch please tell me where we are going to get a 3rd baseman, shortstop, first baseman, 2nd baseman after they trade roberts, and a big time designated hitter. Rowell is a bust out and we haven't been able to get a great free agent postion player to even consider coming here after we had to overpay miguel by 12 million to come here. free agents won't come here for any money. So i am baffled as we don't have any great postion players in our system right now.. .

Roch -- I know you're shell-shocked by the last decade like the rest of us, but as Bill in Elkton put so well earlier, "Stop selling us on failure." Thanks.

Great game! Really entertaining - the great ABs by Oriole batters to keep the game alive, and the fun of figuring out what to do about SS for the 10th. How many of you thought of bringing Jones in to play SS? I know I did, before realizing it was just too many players out of position (Jones at SS, Scott to CF, Millar to LF, R Hernandez to 1B) and they'd shift Mora to SS. Moving Huff to 3B surprised me, as I admit ignorance on the rules of bringing the DH onto the field (I figured it'd just be Millar or Hernandez at 3B). Fun!

At southsidesox.com, posters quoted are,
Tdogg, @ 9:25 pm, "The O's are just goofy."
Chicago Pete @ 9:43 "Baltimore is horrible, Oakland is not far behind."
Ryno @ 10:06, "jeez, the sky is falling."

Last night was another awesome game to be a part of. Trembley was right when he said that once the O's tied it up you kinda just knew we were going to win!! Who knew that the blazing speed of Kevin Millar was going to be the start of something special? lol

Great job by all the guys doing their part to chip in. What I REALLY liked about the late part of the game was that the players who were already out of the game (Guthrie, Sarfate, Fahey, Hernandez, etc) weren't watching the game from the clubhouse...they were lining the rail of the dugout!

WE will see how good the O's really are , here come the Yankees...............

Never thought I'd say this, but we really need Bynum back. A three man bench consisting of Payton, Quiroz and Brandon Fahey is most certainly not going to cut it for any length of time.

How bad is the middle infield depth in this organization that we have Luis Hernandez AND Brandon Fahey both on the 25 man roster? I know Fahey is a fun story and all, but this isn't a major league baseball player. Neither is Hernandez. I realize that you have to take a few bullets when you're rebuilding, but when you're clamoring for the return of Freddy Bynum, somethin' ain't right.

I bet you don't mind re-writing your game story for that one! Sherrill may technically get the W, but this win was ALL Millar: Beginning, Middle, and quite literally, the end! He started it off with the 1st hit and then he set the pace for the game with his steal attempt (I think they missed the tag, cause he even slid slow!). The game would have been over, if Millar hadn't run out the ppassed ball K, but he hustled, and ultimately scored, giving the O's a new life in the game, and his walk in the 10th- coming back from 0-2, ultimately proved to be the winning run. To all of the Millar critics out there: this would have been a loss without the veteran leadership and never-say-die mentality he brings to the table! Sure, a lot of other players contributed, too but this one belongs to the "idiot".

I turned the game off at 9:30 thinking the O’s were done. When I went into my bedroom my wife was watching the movie Double Jeopardy for the 10th time. I turned around and went back downstairs to watch the end of the game. Thank God the wife likes to watch movies over and over again. Great comeback!
In the 8th inning, did anyone think they were watching Kevin Millar running like Rick Dempsey doing an impression of Babe Ruth during a rain delay? Right down to the slide into home. I had to laugh at that.

Go O’s

Roch, you got people coming after you for saying that perhaps in the 8th inning of a game the O’s were losing, that they might end up losing. “Stop selling us on failure”? Come on. Roch, I suppose “There’s still hope” isn’t enough of a hedge anymore.

But it’s a great win. I give Trembley credit for doing what he could to produce a win and not care about who end ups where. Too often, managers play the game too safely and don’t make certain substitutions because they’re afraid of having someone in the wrong position later. I guess it’s better to lose the game in the ninth inning with everyone in the right position than maybe take it to extra innings.

Even if this club ends up as predicted this season, we’ll still be in for some great baseball if they play like this, and if they can keep playing like this, you’d have to think they play above expectations. Again, it’s early in the season, and there a lot of factors to consider. At the least, it would be great to play the Yankees and Red Sox this way. This is the kind of stuff that can regenerate fan interest in this club.

I do not know why people think you have to lose 100 to 110 games to be in a rebuilding mode, or why you have to rip all the joy out of a season while you are rebuilding. Keep "Luuuke," BRob and Sherrill. We have some great prospects coming up and with Markakis, Jones and Weiters as a nucleus, and the dream at least for awhile of possibly adding Texeira to the group, let's enjoy 2008 while we look forward to even better things to come.

So Tejada has lied about his age, his drug use, I wanted to give the guy the benefit of the doubt while he was here, but this ties it. Maybe Palmeiro was telling the truth about the tainted B-12 shot? Maybe he was clean then, but I still think the opposite field hitting, singles hitter 1B from the Cubs did juice when he went to the Rangers & maybe still was his first tour here. Just wondering....
I am so glad guys like Tejada & Gibbons are gone. Pathological liars that very vehemently deny deny deny without blinking really deserve no breaks.

You all might get a kick out of this.... Roch , ask Millar about it too. Chesney has a little bar (actually that is being gracious, it's more like a large hut , dirt floors included) in Jost Van Dyke, it's part of the BVI. JVD is a small Island, maybe 2 miles by 7 miles. That's one of the small Islands in the BVI chain, next to the main one, Tortolla. Anyway, he is the "co-owner" of the bar with his friend Kid Rock. The place would be easy to miss , it's right on the beach, next to a cove & there are 3 other restaurants/bars on the Island that are much better known & visible... Foxy's & my fav.. the Soggy Dollar. You can guess how it got that name.... great place to unwind, drink & swim. Chesney's bar is named The No Stress Zone it's a hand written sign hanging loosely over the entrance. Kid Rock & Chesney bought/opened the place to have to hang at, apparently they both go to St John alot & it's a short ferry ride over to Jost Van Dyke. The place has a few hammocks, a few tables scattered, & a small bar, that's it. The best part was all the pictures inside on almost every wall. It seems more celebrities have been there than the most famous hangout in LA. The Ivy has nothing on this place. In these pictures they weren't all cleaned up either & most of them looked like they were feeling no pain. Of course Pam Anderson in a bikini was on there, as well as about anyone you can name. The most hilarious pictures were of the Rolling Stones. They looked like corpses in bathing suits, drunk as can be too.
I have been to the BVI twice & will definitely go back. If you ever get the chance, go there..... ask for a Bushwacker at Foxy's too, have 3 or 4 & enjoy.

Somebody give Dave Trembley a cigar! And a big stogie for Andy MacPhail too.

O's make a big-time comeback - versus a big-time closer to boot!

You got to love the way the O's play hard!

Go O's!!!!

Rowell is a bust?? How so? He's still a kid that held his own last year at a young age and has a sprained ankle this year. Some people should not reproduce. Before you write something become educated on it.

Hey david, about telling me to my face. Jerk i am tired of people making these derogatory remarks about people on here. Please reply back please ..
