Forgive me, for I have sinned

I’m here to confess my sins. Well, one of them. It’s not like you have all day.

I fell asleep last night with the Mariners leading, 5-1.

Before you go easy on me, I rolled over and made myself fall asleep. It wasn’t by accident. I knew the risk I was taking. I even turned down the volume on my television.

I hate me.

I didn’t know the Orioles rallied to win until checking the reader comments that awaited my approval. The first posting began: “Last night’s victory…”

I assumed that I hadn’t stumbled across a Wizards blog by mistake.

I’ll let all of you decide my punishment. Perhaps I should be forced to:

- Get a marketing job with the Kansas City Royals.

- Stand behind Sidney Ponson in a buffet line.

- Make new reservations for every passenger whose flight was canceled on American Airlines.

- Wash the sheets in Aubrey Huff’s hotel room.

Meanwhile, for those of you keeping score at home, Adam Loewen has been bothered by pain in his left elbow, shoulder and forearm within the past year. But as far as we know, his oblique is fine.

I add “as far as we know” because nobody knew about his forearm until last night.

Loewen obviously tried to ignore the discomfort and pitch through the pain, not wanting to be sidelined again. It’s got to be frustrating for a young starter with so much potential to find it nearly impossible to stay on the mound.

Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, but the Orioles were right to give him extra rest and proceed with such caution. There’s more to his lack of fastball command than just mechanics or inexperience. And the Orioles have to get him healthy, no matter how long it takes. They have other options. He’s not their No. 1 starter. Shut him down and put Matt Albers in the rotation. Or bring up Garrett Olson.

If I’m wrong about this, you can punish me by making me:

- Question Miguel Tejada about his birth certificate.

- Count how many times Mel Kiper says “need pick.”

- Introduce Pacman Jones to my daughter.

We forgive you Roch, but you missed a great win. To win after giving up the 7-5 lead may show some insight to the resiliancy of this team. What's the record now in one-run games?

Maybe Loewen needs 15 days to get healthy?

FAIL.

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Let me start off by saying that i am certainly more than pleased with the way the orioles are playing. Not many teams can keep winning when they have a bust out cleanup hitter batting 229, a starting catcher batting in the 170's and a so called lefthanded relief specialist whose only job is two get 1 batter out i did say i batter out and has given up at least 4 home runs so far this year. I don't know how many more games or excuses that walker has left. But again the most obvious disappointment is lowen a another 1st round pitcher that this team has spent enormous money on that will be a bust out like the other 10 1st round pitchers that we have failed on so miserably. see if i can start to remember some. beau hale, Mike Paradise, chris smith, I believe anoth guy name Chris, ETC ETC, How can one team fail so badily on pitching prospects as the orioles have. I know i might be pushing it a little bit when i say over the last 10 years we haven't had 1 first round pitching prospect make it to the majors and even be average. I just keep asking myself how can you be so wrong so many times. What andy has done so far with this team has been amazing getting 10 players and 5 starters for 2 guys. Now if we can start to weed out walker find a big hitting first baseman, and just wait for weiters to hit the big league club we will have a very exciting team for many years to come.

Hey, what can ya do, I couldn't make it either. I also fell asleep at 5-1. Although, I did half wake up at 7-7 and I think I remember hearing sherrill put it away from my couch.

I guess we should have seen this coming...when Tejada mentioned the toughest pitcher he ever faced was Juan Marichal.

And not for nothing, but being known as Ms. Pacman has great marketing potential.

Break up the O's!

Next time just let one us know. Then you can be Roch Kubatko "Emeritus" for a day.

I laughed out loud at the Aubrey Huff & Pacman Jones lines. Good stuff.

Terrible Loewen news, however. I really hope he isn't shut down for more than 15 days. And I really hope that either Matt Albers or Jim Johnson take his place. Both of them have proven they can handle throwing at the Major League level. I'm not sold on Olson through just a few good AAA starts.

Got a better punishment for you.....
A) Try to run a comb through Mel Kiper's hair, or.......
B) Find a way to prove that he changed his first name from Duane to Mel when he found out he couldn't play baseball and decided to start a new life as a Draft Guru .
By the way, who do you think are going to be the first 10 picks of the 2008 MLB draft?

Barry and Sam , I don't think Ryan will be there at #8 , but I sure hope so,,,,,,,,,,,corner back , most pressing need,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,a good draft will put us right back in the playoffs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Go O's and Ravens,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Loewen should be a lifetime minor leaguer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,as well as the third base coach,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Roch

There is no sin in falling asleep with the O's down 5-1 in a West Coast game. This new phenomenon of the O's actually playing all 27 outs is a novelty for now. If these comebacks continue into August, and you fall asleep during a game, THEN you will need to cleanse your self.

The perfect pennance at that point would be to dress in some of Amber Theoharris' clothes and take over the 'sideline bunny' reporting for the KC series......

Brooks' Bronze Bust Belongs in Baltimore!

I too fell asleep shortly after Millar's double play. I awoke briefly when the score was still 7-2, gave up, turned the TV off, and assumed I'd be reading all about the depressing story in the morning. So, I think it's official that this isn't your father's 2007 Orioles. Seven one-run wins in less than a month compared to 13 all last year. It's not necessary to be good in one-run games to be a good team (last year's world champions were 20-28), but it's the only way to go when you're not more talented than the opponent. For instance, the D-Backs last year were 32-20 in one-run games, leading to 90 wins, even though they were outscored by 20 runs over the course of the season. Now this year some of the young guys are really starting to hit, they added another good starter, and not only do they play well, they're really better than everyone else. They may run away with the NL West this year. Let's hope the O's are on the same path. It's certainly looking pretty good right now and is a lot of fun to watch, though three nights having to be up until 1AM was a bit much.

Most definitely do NOT introduce Pacman to your daughter. She's innocent in all this, and already has suffered enough with you heading off to spring training on her birthday.

Loewen's numbers against lefties are pretty solid. If there's nothing physically wrong other than aches and pains after a return from injury, maybe after a 15-day DL stint and brief rehab assignment he can become our lefty specialist. With Sherril closing, we go to Walker on an almost daily basis. We can't keep doing that, and perhaps Loewen can get experience pitching out of the pen before ultimately returning to the rotation.

Hillarious post, Roch!! Really enjoy reading the blog. I'm hoping they call Olson up to take Loewen's spot and leave Albers in the 'pen to keep doing a great job............The line about Huff's sheets is a scream!!

you must find out what's in the esskay 'meat dogs.'

Roch, you should make a gigantic pot of coffee for all us fools that couldn't turn the game off, even knowing that we had to get up at 5:30am, walk the dog and then drive to work.

Damn near fell asleep during the commute, but you know what?

It was worth it.

HOWBOUTDEMO'S!!!!!!!!!

I was curious as to what we could point to as our biggest success this season, since our starting pitching hasn't been great (several good starts, but nothing spectacular overall), our bullpen has been solid but not lights out, and our hitters haven't gotten rolling yet with the exception of Markakis and Scott. Looking through a bunch of SABR stats, our defense has been awesome thus far. We lead the league in defensive efficiency (% balls in play turned into outs). I'm thinking that having Jones in CF and Fahey/Hernandez at SS is having a bigger difference than people are giving them credit for.

It's okay Roch. I missed the entire game. I feel like such a jerk, but I couldn't beat the Benadryl (sp?). I was out like a light. But don't worry Roch, we all like you too much.... we'd never make you wash Aubrey's sheets.

O's are looking good. All of these one run games would have been losses last year. Big Improvement!!!

Wow. So much to comment on after last night. Another great job by the bullpen. Another dramatic come from behind win. Jones looked great. Payton looked great. To win a series on the road is so important. This team is really making me believe. I feel bad for Loewen, but the team will be even better with Albers starting instead. I'm a bit concerned about Walker but still...Wow.

Hey, Loewen wants to hit. If all else fails, let him hit.

Roch, your punishment should be that you must stay up for all West Coast games the rest of the season. That said, I understand. Those games are just too late. I went to bed when it was scoreless in the second inning. I know, I’m a lightweight. Another win, another series win—great. Adam Loewen—not so great. The long-term view sure diminishes last night’s cool win.

Brian’s paragraph a few entries back on Matt Morris says all you need to know: the lowly Pirates traded for this guy and his contract last season. To elaborate on that, as I recall, SF was trying to unload Morris on any team that would take him, because Morris was noticeably not anywhere near the pitcher he used to be, and SF was willing to eat a significant portion of his contract. Lowly Pittsburgh, though, dealt for him and took on the remainder of his deal ($13 million or so at the time); SF didn’t have to pay any of it. Pittsburgh has a different GM now.

I see some are jumping on Ofahn for suggesting a possible Cabrera trade. I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all. Consider that Cabrera will be a free agent after the 2009 season. If he’s suddenly found himself and he’s lights out from now until then, that’s spectacular, but what about after 2009? If the guy’s suddenly Johan Santana, do the O’s have any hope of signing him, or do they max out his value and get an Erik Bedard trade type package of players for him?

It’s a very weird position to consider—you have a pitcher who’s had tremendous promise, you’ve been waiting painfully for several years to see him live up to it, and when he does, you deal him because he’s nearing free agency. Right now, I don’t think anyone could fault the O’s for not extending him, because why would you at this point? Three consecutive good starts after several bad to so-so seasons does not constitute a long-term extension. Personally, I would tend to just keep him and see where it leads, and maybe deal him by July 31, 2009, depending on how things are looking.

To Bob L:

I've never heard Walker mutter a single excuse. In fact, he usually does the opposite. He takes blames. He told reporters to take "it out" on him..not the rest of the team. I don't know what more you can ask for.

I also guarantee that after another 140 games when you look at statistics Walker will have an ERA around the 3.50 mark. I'll take that.

You'll get no pity from those of us who stayed up to watch the whole thing...hopefully you learned your lesson. ;o)

I REALLY hope that it's just an inflammation type thing with Adam and he only needs a little time to let it settle down and get himself back to 100%. For his sake and the long-term sake of the team they need for him not to miss any more significant playing time and getting set further back in his development.

there is no way to prove this but i'll forever believe that leo mazzone's grueling routine for pitchers hurt more than a few arms during his brief stay and that loewen's injury could be related to that.

Anybody who saw loewen at his best last year has to be worried about the potential he may or may not regain.

More than that, he seems in interviews like a straightforward, level-headed guy -- someone who can almost make us forget the Sidney Ponson/Eric Bedard days, when the rules of civil society did not apply (I kind of liked Bedard's smirky non-answers, though).

It's not fair to blame the front office for Loewen's injury or to classify him as "another No. 1 pick who is a bust."

Let's show a little hope and a little compassion.

The blog headline had me worried ... thought maybe I'd have to read about lustful thoughts, or touching yourself in an impure manner. Whew!

I have always said that bad attitudes can bring a whole team down. McFail and Trembley have this team finally going in the right direction. I'm enjoying this knowing that there is a plan and the fact that they are playing hard and winning some games right now makes rebuilding way more tolerable.
Maybe Millar was right when he said it would be a Cubs - Orioles World Series.
I kid.
Let's fess up here. Roch wasn't the only one who was going in and out of consciousness during the game last night.
Dave

Inexcusable! Actually, I turned it off at 5-1, but I saw the O's catch up to 5-3 while at the bar, and then went to a 24 hour diner. When I came back, it was the 9th, 8-7.

For your punishment however, perhaps we should force you to find a job for Jeffery Maier or something.

Roch, I was wondering if the coaching approach at the minor league level is any different than years past...can you ask someone that question? What is the relationship between kranitz and the minor league coordinators? is it possible that the orioles major league staff has left explicit instructions for the minor league staff about coaching up the pitchers, and the minor league staff is actually executing those instructions? Johnson comes up a different pitcher, Liz-Penn-Olson showing some signs of life... As for the major O's, is there a major league lineup today doing more with less?

Me neither Roch. I was beat like a drum. Oddly though, I thought there was a shot I'd wake up and read about some crazy comeback. Never would have thought that last year!

This is another difference between this year and last year: bad things have already happened to this team and they are continuing to persevere. They have a solution for the Loewen injury. Plus, lots of room for almost every player to get better.

Notice ESPN has our new closer "Carlos Silva" in their photo wire http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=bal

I think this is Andy MacPhail's only bad move to date. :)

I watched from 5-2 until the end. I had just gotten home from my game & was still awake so..... nice comeback! That had to hurt the Seattle fans... Jones & Sherrill doing them in.

Don't all you Loewen haters fell dumb now? Too quick to judge. If he is hurt, that explains alot.
Ditto the Huff bashers. He had a big hand in last night's comeback too.

That was a fun game to watch. Roch you crack me up!!

Our April MVP is . . . Andy MacPhail.

Some folks are forgetting, Loewen cannot be sent to AAA. He demanded a major league contract when he was drafted, so he burned an option each year he was in the minors. No options left for him, and no wiggle room for MacPhail. I don't think the players' union would allow him to somehow waive that contractual stipulation, allowing him to go back down without clearing waivers. We have to put him on the 15-day DL immediately, and look into whether we can put him on the 60-day to buy him more time for some extended spring training.

Punishment for Roch,,,,,,,,,,,,do the Anita Marks show in a speedo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Cleaning the sheets is too harsh , you don't need capital punishment , touching those sheets is a crime all by itself,,,,,,,,,,,eeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuoo

,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Having to watch this team every day for all these years is punishmen enough.

Ha ha, quality post Roch.

Honestly, I did the same thing, and I usually don't. I also went to bed when it was 5-1.

I say bring up Olson and leave the valuable Albers in as the long man... along with Johnson helping in long relief too.

"Wash the sheets in Aubrey Huff’s hotel room." Roch - I am in tears!

Roch--Can't find the posting that began "Last night's victory..."

Either it featured a wild serving of far too colorful language and didn't meet your approval, or you really were tapped into the Wizards blog.

Your punishment? Eyes taped open ala Alex in "A Clockwork Orange."

Aha! The secrets out! Now we know why the posts sometimes take so long to show up. Roch is the gate keeper!

Jim in Dundalk, save some commas for everyone else! If not for us, then for our children and grandchildren!

On the serious side, nice win last night. Millar needs to start hitting with the bases loaded. At least he's playing some nice 1st.

Who is Randor Bierd? Well, whoever he is it's time that he gets some credit. He of the 0.00 ERA, 12.2 IP, 9 hits, 3 BB 5 SO. Not bad for somebody, who couldn't claim a roster spot in the Tigers organization.

It could be Jim Johnson, who gets the nod as a starter. As well as Albers has pitched it's Johnson, who seems to have a higher upside.

What an incredible game last night!

This team is FAR from perfect. They strand runners on 3rd with less than 2 outs, boot the occasional ground ball, make base running blunders that would get a 3rd grader benched, and pop out 3-1 fastballs.

BUT they still find a way to win. In the past we would play great just to find a way to lose at the end. Not the '08 O's (so far at least).

I know it is only April 25th, but 6-1 in 1 run games, a couple 9th inning comebacks, and solid late inning relief has me really enjoying the ride so far.

Magic!

Kudos on guaranteeing last night's victory on Anita's show yesterday. And your forecast for the White Sox series?

Well, Roch. you missed a helluva game. One of the ways we judge our Baseball loyalty is by having bleary eyes every morning when the team is out west. If we just roll over and go to sleep, we are lost souls.

Kind of like my wife one winter evening, looking at the three elementary school students we were raising and uttering the awful words "I sure hope it doesn't snow and cancel school tomorrow." There are lines, once crossed, over which you can never ever go back. My wife had crossed forever into parenthood and adulthood with that one little utterance. Me? I root for snow all the time and watch the late games. You can steal my youth when you can pry my wrinkled, arthritic, age-spotted hands off of it.

These are the best of times, man! Comebacks are rare. Don't miss them when you have a chance. And the O's are delivering them in bunches right now.

Anyway, I feel truly sorry for those who were not properly up to speed with the flow of the entire game when they got to see Sherrill, Roberts, Hernandez and Millar turn that awesome double-play in the 9th against that pest, Ichiro. Happiness and satisfaction. Ain't the beer cold.

How 'bout dem O's, hon?

You are not a lost soul, yet, Roch, because you have confessed your sin, seem to be showing remorse, and are willing to accept a pennance.

Here are some fitting acts of contrition for your consideration:

1. Count the number of times Palmer starts a sentence with the word "again" even though the thought he is about to express was not mentioned before. Do this every inning until he goes an inning with 0 transgressions. This should happen around August, perhaps.

2. Accept an invitation from E-60 to appear on camera and talk about baseball. Allow them to wire your mike around both ankles and wrists.

3. Instruct and convince Brian Billick on journalistic values and respect. Follow up by getting him to write a column on the importance of humility for leaders.

4, Mind Melvin Mora's kids on the next snow day, so Mr and Mrs Mora can do some Christmas shopping.

5. File the paperwork and make the calls needed for all service calls until the new scoreboard is performing flawlessly. Make sure it is all covered by warranty.

Wait an orioles minute and give me an orioles break!! They won yesterday after 0-5???!!! It just makes my friday even more friday.

Shame on you, Roch! Kidding.

My fiance and I actually got to the game a bit later than planned last night. Just as the Mariners were building their 5 - 0 lead. So of course she turns to me and asks if I want us to walk all the way back home. Hell no! :P

We got in just as Payton hit his homer. The game turned out to be more fun than I thought, even though the weather made me feel like I was at a Ravens game. The comeback was exciting. And of course, both teams made a liar out of me. I was saying on the way to the game that both offenses don't score much.

Saw some other O's fans in the house. (Anyone from this blog, maybe? I was the short guy in the B-Rob jersey) Two in particular were sitting in my section, and cheering loudly as often as they could. M's fans didn't outcheer us much. They don't know how to heckle out here. There were two stat geek guys sitting next to us who were actually pretty cool, though. When Sexson ran after a foul ball that went into the stands, one of them yelled, "Hurt yourself, Richie!" Oh and how about the idiots running onto the field in the 9th inning? I don't know if they showed it on the news in Maryland. They completely ignored it in the news out here. One of them ran RIGHT past Jay Payton, and looked like he was going to hit him or something, but then didn't. That was definitely one of the crazier games I've seen in a while. Had fun irritating the locals, though! Hehe.

Also found this little gem on a Mariners blog after the game, obviously posted by an M's fan:

" 11:12 PM, Apr 24, 2008
The real "gut - wrencher" was offseason trade of 270 avg AJ and 8 save Sherrill for "mommy I got a boo boo bedar (no d)". "

I don't know what the "no d" was about, but it's still hilarious.

This team is definitely more resilient than in years past. They chipped away at the lead all game. That Mariner bullpen has some real problems right now. Albers and Beird were great. I think Trembley needs to stay away from Walker for a little bit. The defense made some really good plays as well.

Alright, done posting now!

If Loewen HAS TO get healthy then put him on the DL to heal, send him out for some rehab starts to build him up. It just seems like the Orioles are destroying him at this point. He hasn't progressed at all this year.

Rich

It's not just you, I fell asleep right before the 9th (damn commercials). Woke up in front of the tv at 1:30 but I went to bed believing they held on to the win.

This team is tenacious.

Roch--Love the header "Forgive me, for I have sinned."

If your blog buddies become unbearable with the needling, feel free to use Swaggart Act II: "The Lord told me it's flat none of your business."

Put Johnson in the rotation - that sick movement on his fastball will make for lots of awkward swings. Good curveball keeps them off the speed of his fastball. Very Webb-ian.

Maybe we shouldn't introduce Aubrey Huff to your daughter before you clean those sheets...

Why are we bringing up Torres? I thought Scott Moore was next in line. So that gives us 4 middle infielders, by my count, of which 3 have essentially zero power.

Nearly spit up my breakfast with laughter at the Aubrey Huff punishment. Standing behind El Sid at the buffet was #2.

Hey Roch,

You missed one of the best Dave Trembley moments of the season. In the 9th, some fans ran onto the field. When they were subdued, one of them was lead by the O's dugout, where Trembley was standing on the top step. It was very brief, but Trembley was shown giving it to the fan who was caught as he was led away. I spit my Coke all over the place--priceless! DT's good for this team in so many ways. Why hasn't he been signed to a three or four year deal?

Roch, I would have to say it is now evident why Loewen was ( Held Back ) from making his regular start. They knew something was wrong & were giving him a few more days rest. Let's not get fooled again by the double talk !!!! You did the right thing going to sleep, I was so pumped after the final out I couldn't sleep for another hour.

Nice to see Reimold break out of his start of the season slump with a 4-4 game... 1 HR, 3 RBI's and he raised the average up to .240. Tony Butler got his first win for Delmarva last night. Overall, a pretty good night for the farm teams.

hey Roch, any updates on Patton's surgery/recovery?

It's amazing to look at the amount of talent the O's have in the farm system. I was very skeptical at first but I'm becoming a big believer in MacPhail... He's made two great trades and we also need to give a lot of credit to the scouts and people in charge of the draft the last few years. Even though some or most of these guys won't pan out in the bigs, just having 20 guys with major league star potential in the farm system now is something I've never seen as an O's fan.

also Roch, the line about introducing Pacman to your daughter is an instant classic and the funniest thing I've ever read on here.

Sleeping on the job, Roch?

Is it elbow stiffness or forearm stiffness? The morning report said that Loewen had pain and discomfort in his forearm, but 1.09 p.m. news item says that it's the elbow. If it's elbow injury than it's more worrisome.

I can see bringing up another pos player, but Torres? he is a 2B right? Unless they are about to deal Roberts (idiots), that move makes little sense with the current roster. They need another SS or OFer more.

Roch,

We've got a problem here...It is now officially good luck for you to go to sleep when we are trailing.

I expect you to do what is best for the Orioles.

Yours truly,

All serious O's fans.

I think the league has got a good read on Millar lately, and it is getting tougher for him to do the dead pull thing with success. Here's hoping that he can adjust a bit. He's batting in huge spots.

Roch, you've got me beat. I shut it off down 5-2 and I didn't even think to check and see the result of the game until just now -- and I only found out from your blog post here!

Let us blame the West Coast game time rather than our own lack of faith. Yea, truly, for the Orioles hath come from behind again, and there shall be much rejoicing. Amen.

Bob Lacione:

I'm not sure where you are getting four homeruns given up by Walker. Correct if I am wrong but he's given up three. Despite this, I think that Walker is getting beat on good pitches by great hitters. Doesn't matter how well you throw it, hitters like Ichiro and Carlos Pena (who has two off Walker this season) will beat you sooner or later.

threedaysrest:

I also saw that Trembley moment. I laughed so hard I had tears. The look he gave that fan was one of pure hatred.

And to KW: I wish you weren't disrespectful to Seattle fans. We are better than Yanks & Sox fans in so many ways...we need to act like it.

Look jay m, whether it's 3 or 4 home runs the fact remains he is getting paid a great deal of money to get 1 batter out, and he get do that. I know for a fact that he has come into a game and given at leat 3 home runs and two 2 run base hits all to left handed batters that he is suppose to own. Enough already.

Let Lowen { wimp arm } hit. Please call Gibbons and get Low and Ray some Roids. Palmer pitched 1,000,000 innings . Never mind.

KW..."Saw some other O's fans in the house. (Anyone from this blog, maybe? I was the short guy in the B-Rob jersey) "... that may have actually BEEN B-Rob, no?

Ha. Slow day here with the Yanks in town, although I have thanked many of them for flocking somewhere else and leaving OPACY alone for a few days, at least. It's hard to explain geographic disadvantages to some.

Last nite's game was great to watch on gamecast until it kept refreshing the name "Millar" for every.single.hitter. for at least three innings. I know the guy's a gamer, and all, but wow, this far exceeds "taking one for the team"...

Standing in line behind The Fat Kid? We'll soon have Emaciated Roch and well, no one wants that, now, do they?

I can't listen to Mel Kiper myself, in part because I'm too busy screaming at the TV, "The 1997 Keith Olberman called, HE WANTS HIS HAIR, SPECS, AND ILL-FITTING SUITS BACK, PLEASE!"
