Brief outing
So this is why the Orioles are carrying 13 pitchers.
They might need them all tonight.
Steve Trachsel threw 32 pitches in the third inning and recorded only one out - when catcher Ramon Hernandez cut down Gregg Zaun trying to steal third base. For the game, he threw 67 pitches in 2 1/3 innings and left with the Orioles trailing, 4-0.
Trachsel walked three batters in the third. He hit David Eckstein to begin the game.
Of the five outs, two came courtesy of Hernandez's throws.
Now we have Greg Aquino, regarded as Plan B if George Sherrill failed as the closer. Now he's the long man.
Meanwhile, I'm having a much better night than Trachsel. I threw down a buck in the time-of-game pool and picked Friday.

Comments
just out of curiosity...WHY is Payton still on this team? Each time he's at bat, the result is ugly and predictable: weak pop up, weak ground out, or strikeout. i would've loved to see the O's drop BOTH Jays but i guess they could only settled for Gibbons. Payton, if in, should be relegated to batting 9th every single time. His approach and swing are train wrecks. He doesn't fit into this team's objectives and/or direction one bit. DFA him.
Oh and great effort on that HR that barely got into the 1st row. Payton played that like it was heading for the upper deck

Who comes up tomorrow to replace Aquino and give Trembley a fresh arm???
Or does he use Trachsel in relief in a day or two???
Maybe both things happen???
"c" is for can't throw strikes.

Almost Believin'--You wondered if Jay Payton "assumed" the ball was out of the park regardless of what he did, and thus did nothing. Maybe, but perhaps as he drifted back to the wall he asked himself whether his contract included a clause specifically requiring him to JUMP in such circumstances; not recalling such a clause, he opted to stand, conserve his energy and watch admiringly as the homer passed overhead.

Dave's a nice guy, most mgrs would have let GA take one for the team tonight, given the shape of the bullpen and his place in it, or possibly out of it if he keeps it up...anyway, one of those games, but for everyone's sake these could be quicker and less painful

You got your Blue Jays and you have your O Jays.
Stats I would like to see..Batting average in first two at bats vs last two at bats. Another one...Batting average divided by the ERA of the pitcher that you got your hits against. The lower the ERA, the higher the number .
That first stat would indicate the advantage of a Pinch Hitter..I sometimes think the value is over rated as opposed to a bunch of sore arms.
Second stat indicates a batter who beefs up his average against poor arms .
PS, this is tough to watch. Mr Blue Jay is beside himself.

This is the beginning of The End. Tonight the Orioles fall out of first place and no longer lead the league in winning percentage. From here on out the O's will be looking up in the standings.

The new S Marcum and the old B Orioles.
I see Huff got the night off to rest his aching average.
Too bad A Jones is stuck in this terrible funk.

Trachsel decided to honor Jackie Robinson by giving up 42 hits...or it just seemed like it.
