As the smoke cleared...
Manager Dave Trembley kept his post-game remarks brief, which was fine with a certain reporter who usually transcribes his quotes for Sun beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec.
The session lasted 3 minutes, 34 seconds – or roughly the amount of time it took for Greg Aquino to begin wishing that everyone had ignored the bullpen phone.
Trembley said he wasn’t concerned with the state of his bullpen and the lack of a rested long reliever.
“I think we’ll be OK,” he said. “That’s why we stretched Aquino out. Aquino was in a situation where he had to go. He had to give us as much as we possibility could out of him. I think we’ll be OK tomorrow. (Jim) Johnson will be available tomorrow. We can bring (Dennis) Sarfate back. I’d stay away from Aquino. (Randor) Bierd’s probably all right for an inning, and the other guys at the end will be fine – (Jamie) Walker, (Chad) Bradford, (George) Sherrill. But obviously you can’t afford to have these kinds of games often because, we’ve said that repeatedly, it takes its toll on your bullpen. You need to have your starting pitchers get you to a certain point and place in the game where you’re not overusing that bullpen. This is one game and that’s the way it goes and we’ll be ready tomorrow.”

Okay, Trachsel gets a mulligan. But if he keeps this up, it won't be long before we'll be obliged to release him and bring up Olson (or possibly Penn, but Olson is outdueling him now).

Gee, do you think Trembley has any confidence at all in Aquino? If I were him, I'd pack my bags now.

Ouch....
Ouch to the game.
Ouch to my knee because I fell up the stairs at OPACY.
and Ouch to my head...not from the booze, but because of the O's fan sitting behind me. I swear that guy would not lay off of Whitt (Toronto's First base coach) and how he wouldn't stand in the box. I was laughing so hard I had tears coming down my face. Whitt actually taunted us by tip toeing over to the box line and almost stepping in it.
Good game for the fans who were taunting Whitt, bad game for everything else. Argh! I won't be happy in the morning. We better get our stuff together, because the Yankees will not go down without a fight!
Go O's.
I
Let's win tomorrow O's!

Oh and one more thing....
I'm a huge B-Rob fan, but I really wanted to jump on the field and slap him. Everyone in my section tonight felt the same way when it came to B-Rob. It looked like he wasn't putting any effort into anything. A ground ball went right by him and it looked like he could have got it if he dove, but he just jogged towards it and gave up. Quite a few balls flew past him and it looked like he didn't even care.
Just an observation. It's only the beginning boys.... Let's not give up just yet!

Positives from tonight's game: Adam Jones belts his first Oriole HR, goes 1-2 with 2 walks, Luke Scott goes 2-4, raising his avg to .386, Nick Markakis hits his 2nd HR and ups his avg to .326 and Melvin bangs HR #3.
For the second outing in a row, Randor gave up a few hits and allowed runs to score but they were all charged to the previous pitcher, keeping his ERA at a tidy 0.00, sparkling in any league in the galaxy.
Look for the Birds to jump all over Contreras tomorrow night as Loewen gives a solid 6 2/3 innings. HR's from Markakis, Scott, and Jones. The Birds will catch Gavin Floyd on the bounce from his last excellent outing in the second game of the series, winning on a 2-run double by Nick the Stick as Guthrie shuts the "Good Guys" down.
And then bring on the Yankees as Daniel Cabrera looks a lot like the guy who once stymied them on a one-hitter and the Birds win the first game of the series, 5-3. Millar goes deep, Huff knocks in two on a double to right center, and Sherrill notches the save.
Almost forgot to mention the stellar play Luis Hernandez will make in the 7th inning.

i am not too worried. i think this team has a lot more depth than last season. they got guys in AAA that can come up and i wouldnt be surprised if trembley decides to take Olson or LIz for a test drive in a long releivers role because he knows that it might get to the point where one of these starters loses their job in the roatation and its almost time to look at some possible replacements

Hard to believe 13 pitchers aren't enough bu that's what's happening. Sarfate is starting to show why the Astros shuttled him back and forth to the minors and finally gave up on him.I still say using Albers for that one start was a bad idea because they lost his services over a 6-7 day period out of the bullpen. Let's hope the White Sox have thier first hitting slump of the year, they are due to cool off.

Last night was my first chance to see the O's on the tube and boy, did I pick a real clunker.
First, the positives...Scott looks good, as does Jones and of course, Markakis. Beird has great movement on his pitches and hopefully, a diamond in the rough..
On the downside, it's real depressing for me to see Payton still in an O's uni. That arms folded, scowl etc while his pitcher was struggling drives me crazy, along with shaky d and lack of pop. If we can release Gibbons, why not him too?
Trachsel had 2 decent outings but I'm sure we'll see a lot of bad ones too, not to mention his snail's pace was even noticeable to the Jays announcers. I guess he'll be around for while due to lack of starting options but surely there's a young pitcher in the minors that can do just as well.
Aquino looked totally lost out there-I'm guessing he just had a bad outing because I can't believe we'd put him on the roster with that lack of command. The Jays were lucky only one guy got hit!!
I also think the Jays ran up the score by leaving their big hitters in all game and maybe a high hard one to send a message??
All in all, a bad night and the empty stadium just added to it. I am realistic to expect these type of games but I just wish we didn't have so many aging veterans clogging up the roster while the 'rebuild' is going on.

Surprise, surprise, Bedard is on the DL. Adam Jones hits first (of many) homer as an Oriole. Sherrill leads the league in saves. Thank you, Seattle.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate Jay Payton any more. Do you think Trembley wants to take back the statement that Payton is a better fielder? How can you strike out looking twice on the exact same pitch in the exact same location?
Traschel is a stop gap. A veteran pitcher with a losing record for his career is not what we need in the rotation if we want to save the bullpen. Time to give someone with potential that slot.
Posted by: Anthony | April 16, 2008 8:22 AM
Isn't this why Daniel C. is still in the rotation...............He may not be living up to his potential but he eats up plenty of innings..............just a thought.............
Anyone feeling sorry for Bedard on the D.L. ?
Posted by: Jim from Dundalk | April 16, 2008 8:43 AM
Ahhhh....There's gonna be a few of these games this year.
So when do we move Jones up to protect Markakis? That is gonna be one sweet combo real soon.
C for can't get into the seventh inning.
Posted by: Glen Burnie Joe | April 16, 2008 8:44 AM
On an unrelated topic...how come Wieters didn't play on Monday and then only pinch hit last night? I understand giving him a rest as a catcher, but what's up with resting two days in a row? He didn't get hurt, did he?
"c" is for cautious

Just a thought - are the O's being somewhat hamstrung because Bradford and Walker only pitch to 1 or 2 guys? Can't those guys be counted on to pitch a complete inning every other day? It the "Appearances" stat that's misleading, it's the innings/outs that really count.
That said, I think Dave Trembley is outstanding. IMO the O's have one of the best field managers in the game.
He got it right the other day - "it's pitching, defense, and timely hitting that win ballgames". Did he get that line from one of my posts last year? LOL!
Posted by: John in Conn | April 16, 2008 9:23 AM
Almost believin' is correct. Payton should have made an attempt. The ball was a row deep. I wasn't a Payton basher before because I thought him a servicable 4th outfielder. Not trying is another story. Straighten up or see ya Payton.
Posted by: Oldschool Rich | April 16, 2008 9:27 AM
Aquino did OK, for the first 2 innings. He got rocked after that, at about pitch #40? The guy has been a closer or short man the last several years at least, cut him a break. He pitched well beyond what he has done in the past, ate some innings, & saved a few other guys. He isn't a great pitcher, but he fell on the grenade last night, sort of. He doesn't deserve to be shot now for surviving...
What is disturbing is they "stretched" him out & not anyone else, basically telling the guy, your arm, possibly your career ,are expendable in our eyes, not anyone else's in the bullpen. Aquino probably knows this too, but he did it & didn't whine or quit. O's fans should give the guy a break on this one....
I'd let Bradford toss his frisbees up there for 3+ innings if they need a "long man" again tonight. That delivery is probably the least stressful of any on the arm.

Some observations.
Sarfate does bring big time heat. He also looks like he needs counselling on the mound. I hope that Krasnick is able to effect the mental aspect of his game .
Is Sherrill going to become too predictable ?That one at bat where Rios fouled off 74 pitches in a row was reminiscent of Benitez days.
Does he have an out pitch ?
I am hopeful that Loewen keeps the ball down tonight and shows some progress.
He needs a W .

And last night Soriano hurts himself and will require an MRI on his calf. He of course has been leading off for the Cubs.Piniella says "if he is out...it will hurt us". Now, DeRosa was moved from 2nd base to left field.
What does it all mean ? It means that there will be pressure after an 8-5 start to help keep the momentum. Hendry will have the political and the moral authority to give MacPhail what he wants IF Soriano is out for an extended period . No DH means no place for him.

Craig S.
I believe that Wieters was away for a funeral, and came back in time to pitch hit.

"Meanwhile, I'm having a much better night than Trachsel. I threw down a buck in the time-of-game pool and picked Friday.:
I laughed so hard at this line that I'm getting looks from co-workers. Good line Roch.
I went to the game as well, and stayed the whole time. I am a masochist.
And to the guy who said Cabrera is only here to eat up innings: Look again. We are 3-0 in his starts. Granted, we have hit well behind him, but that is why he is here. He keeps you in ballgames and gives you a chance to win.

Jennifer: Did any bring up that Ernie Whitt actually played for the O’s briefly in 1991? Whitt’s probably bitter because (1) his last year was in 1991 with the O’s , so he was never able to play in Camden Yards, and (2) his last year was in 1991, just before the Blue Jays won their back to back titles.
The bullpen has pitched well so far this year overall but it won’t last because the starting pitching can’t get deep into games. The O’s need someone to pitch deep into a game, but the problem is, they don’t have anyone you can consistently rely on for that. Maybe Guthrie, but his relative inexperience suggests maybe not. Maybe Cabrera, but no one knows what version of Cabrera shows up any given start. Trachsel blew it last night, and no one’s really counting on him giving 7 or 8 strong innings anyway.
I think with this rotation, it’s going to take some solid managing and roster moves of cycling in and out players from the minors. This isn’t anything new, of course. Others have made a good point about specialists like Bradford and Walker. Perhaps a team like the O’s should not have two specialists but rather another pitcher who can take on multiple innings of work.

I see that finally some around here are starting to see the Payton I saw last year.... the guy is a malcontent too.
Jennifer, thanks for the Roberts incites. I saw some facial expressions from Roberts that says a few things last night that I didn't like, somewhat like Payton does... Loafing or going half speed due to indifference is NOT good. That attitude can spread. Correct me if I am wrong all, but isn't he still being paid? Isn't he still on the O's ML roster & playing baseball? I can't stand a guy dogging it at any level!
Posted by: Brian | April 16, 2008 11:44 AM
If B-Rob and Payton are loafing up by now , that is not good sign. If Bradford and Walker are nothing more than 'specialists' , then we need relievers who can actually work more than an inning . Speaking of DCab , he can do more than eat up innings , hit batters , wild pitches , free passes , load up bases , letting runners steal bases, need i say more ?
Ramon , i like say well done on throwing those 2 runners out , keep it up !
MacPhail , you might want keep your cell phone handy
Jennifer- you might want use the railings on your upcoming visits?

Look brian roberts doesn't want to be here and sometimes it shows. I don't think he has really stop playing hard as of yet but you can believe when the oriole start losing regularly and they will start losing regulary then we might have a problem with him. I put my faith in andy so far and i guess all i can do is let him do what he thinks best.
Posted by: bob lancione | April 16, 2008 2:04 PM
Allan, I did use the railings! HAHA! I was at the top and the railings ended. I blame the fall on my boots. Not alcohol consumption!

It is quite funny how most feel like Jay Payton is a loafer. I am not a baseball expert, but I believe the reason he started last night was due to his hustle the night before. Trembley has said that he is doing everything he has asked him to do. Likewise, I believe the announcers of one game stated that Adam Jones mentioned at a luncheon that Jay has been one of the players who has helped him the most. That is interesting, considering the fact that most people on here feel like he has a bad attitude.

I'm not being negative.........
I just don't appreciate laziness..........
Roberts should be putting in 100% like everyone else............ He's still on this team. He needs to play like it!..............
I'm not mad about the loss................Ya can't win 'em all!
