After the loss
Dennis Sarfate and Carlos Pena exchanged words in the eighth inning, but nothing materialized. Though a few Tampa Bay players left the dugout, none of the Orioles vacated the bench.
Sarfate yelled at Pena to get in the box. Pena kept stepping out, which irritated the Orioles' reliever.
Sarfate wouldn't comment on the incident.
Manager Dave Trembley explained his decision to use McCrory in the seventh inning by saying it seemed like a good situation, with the Rays sending up the bottom of their order and the Orioles trailing. Get three outs and get out of there. But it didn't happen.
"He'll be much better next time," Trembley said. "We got that one out of the way for him."

I have no problem with Trembley putting Bob McCrory in tonight. Get his feet wet. I was looking forward to it. So it didn't work out tonight. Didn't matter because we couldn't get passed that one run anyway.
I do have a problem with Sarfate yelling at Pena to get in the batters box. He'll get there when he gets there. Funny that Pena jogged to first as he hit into a double play.

It's funny, but the phrase "bottom of the order" really doesn't mean much in the American League.
In the 1960s, when we could count on the pitcher--unless he was Earl Wilson, Gary Peters, or Milt Pappas--going up there and looking at 3 down the middle or half-heartedly swinging his way back to the bench, there was indeed a bottom of the order.
That's still pretty much business as usual in the National League, though Micah Owings is one monster of a hitter.

Sarfate is now my favorite reliever - I've been yelling at Pena to get his @&& back in the batters box for the past 2 series! Next time he pulls that crap someone should make him grab some dirt.

Roch--In 3 of the last 6 posts, you joined the conversation, a .500 average.
Hey, it's nice hearing from you like that.
Are you trying to prove to us that you didn't conk out during tonight's game? (We could have used that nap from you when we were down 8-1; let the magic of dreams happen!)

This team is going exactly nowhere this year...yep, better to win a few games than to lose of course, but over the course of a season the fairly pathetic lineup that gets trotted out there each game just won't score enough runs to win more than they lose...middle of the pack pitching and bottom of the pack hitting has a way of catching up to you. That said, there's no reason to second guess Trembley tonight. The rebuilding theme means you bring guys up and get their feet wet, get them some major league experience and a feel for the game at this level, maybe see a little bit of what you have. I'm glad to see it. I couldn't care less about wins and losses as long as this team continues to take the necessary steps to improve the Oriole franchise at all levels. A few wins cannot change the goal. Nothing at all wrong with tonight. Well, excepting the usual stuff, but most of that won't get
fixed by most of the guys that are currently here ...Would it surprise anyone if the O's had an entirely new infield on Aug 1?

The thing is, we wouldn't have won the game anyway, since we couldn't hit worth a darn. So I don't really care which relievers he used as long as they weren't named Walker or Bradford.

In my honest opinion that's about the 5th game we've let slip away due to questionable managerial decisions.I like Trembley but think he overmanages games a little too much.Only time will tell if his hands off positive approach only will pay off in the long run,it sure hasn't helped us play smarter baseball so far.Better maybe ,but not smarter and that will cost us in the long run like it did tonight.

Great, now that everyone knows how to irritate him, he is going to have a problem keeping his focus if he keeps letting this kind of BS distract him.

Roch - great line today with the Canadian Koufax (not being able to pitch during the Stanley Cup)! Very clever and darned funny.

Good for Sarfate. Pena just looks like a baby for stepping in and out of the box so much. Dig in and get ready! I think it shows he's really not that good of a hitter if he has to compose himself and thing after every pitch.
Do your thinking in the batter's box, Pena.

I missed the Pena dust up, that game reminded me of last year too much, I had to stop watching.
I hate to say it, but I saw what I expected from McCrory last night. He is a great talent & probably will be a good pitcher for the O's ....one day.... but as I said a few days ago...this is too soon. He hasn't even had much time at AAA....
I didn't think Albers had all that great of a start last night. It was OK, but hardly worth glowing over either...

Got to start somewhere. A rebuilding team trying to go somewhere gives starts to guys like Olson and Albers and key relieving opportunities to guys like McCrory, Bierd and Sarfate. There's little point in trying to use Bradford and Walker every time. Let's not forget that Walker already has blown a couple this year. I love the live arms of these young guys. Trembley is doing the right thing letting them pitch. I'd much rather watch McCrory than Greg Aquino and Albers than Trax or some other retread like Josh Fogg.
Q is for quit complaining. Things are so much better this year.

Oh, on the Hernandez slide.... I knew unless that leg was severed, he would get up & stay in the game. If nothing else, I bet that guy knows if he comes out now & gives anyone else a chance, other than Fahey, he might never see SS in Baltimore again.... or anywhere else in the majors on a full time basis. You think Bancells whispered "Wally Pip" to Hernandez when he got out there?

Nick Adenhart of williamsport high school; williamsport, md. has been called to the major leagues to make 3 starts, i think it's worth noting in the blog

"If you're a fantasy baseball player, don't pick anybody from the Orioles. ... Nobody is going to pop your eyes out," Millar said. "But if you're in the American League East, bring your lunch, because you're going to need it."
What the Hizell is he talking about? Bring your lunch?!? Is he planning a pot-luck? Is he stealing the other teams' post-game spread?!?
