View from the back field

The Orioles are playing an intrasquad game of sorts before the real game begins. A pitcher, batter and catcher are on one of the back fields. Pitching coach Rick Kranitz stands behind the mound to the shortstop side, and Triple-A pitching coach Larry McCall or instructor Don Werner call balls and strikes from behind the cage.

Garrett Olson nailed Scott Moore on the right elbow. Moore flung his bat in disgust and was seething, and he returned later with the elbow wrapped. Olson tried to apologize later.

Jay Gibbons broke two bats - on pitches from Olson and Chad Bradford - and drew laughter from teammates.

Kranitz came within inches of being nailed by a line drive. He spun out of the way, leading Jamie Walker to yell, "You look like you took ballet, Kranitz."

Adam Jones, taking batting practice on the main field, interrupted the game twice by hitting balls that cleared the protective netting beyond the left field fence and landed on the back infield. One ball bounced between the mound and third base. That's quite a shot.

Well at least Olson doesn't throw hard enough to actually hurt somebody.

I guess Jay has the phrases doing some damage with some lumber and dDoing some damage to some lumber confused. At least he is getting some time in getting laughed at before the season starts.

Great stuff Roch, this is an example of the on the spot insight we can't usually get.

Thank you.....

Wow, has Moore been beating Olson to his favorite workout equipment at Bally’s?

It’s my understanding MLB has given approval for George Sherrill to use “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” as his entrance song. He will be allowed 147 warm up pitches, which the league believes will carry him through the drum solo.

The Yankees plan to counter this with every Bomber pitching change this season featuring a live performance by Ronan Tynan.

Any word on what the damage is to Moore?

Olson nailed Ramon in the first intrasquad game. With Olson's minor league credentials, you'd think he could control his pitches better. He's starting to look like a head case.

Dave.

Yeah, two pitches got away from him. Yep, sure is a headcase.

Thank God Dennis Sarfate wasn't pitching.

Garret Olson is just not at a major league level yet. Optioning him was a good idea.
