Game update
The Orioles and Nationals are tied, 1-1, in the fourth inning.
Dmitri Young just singled for the Nationals. Then he hopped on his motorized scooter and went to first base.
The guy receives a generous contract extension from the Nationals and shows up at spring training looking like the Chrysler Building.
Estimates here place him at 300 pounds.
His left thigh, I mean.
Nice guy. Just needs to mix in a salad once in a while.
Young told reporters here that he didn't swing a bat until reporting to camp. But he did win 18 separate chicken wing eating contests.
Or maybe it was 300. I wasn't taking notes.
Anyway, the Orioles scored their run in the first inning when Chris Roberson walked, stole second base and advanced when Young fielded Tike Redman's grounder and threw late to third. Adam Jones sacrificed Redman to second - no idea why - and Roberson scored on Oscar Salazar's grounder to short.
Felipe Lopez led off the third with a long home run off Steve Trachsel, who's allowed three hits.
Luis Hernandez fielded a routine grounder in the second and fired the ball over Scott Moore's head, almost wiping out half the Nationals' team. Players scattered as though someone threw a stink bomb at their feet. Or Young was inviting himself over for dinner.
That was Hernandez's sixth error, which is no way to celebrate being the Opening Day shortstop.

Wow, I think thats a new personal best for fat jokes. Has your hotel's cable been showing lots of Chris Farley movies, or are you just trying to get in your practice for the O's Press level?

Sorry but I don't think Luis deserves a spot in the Opening Day Line-Up. I know it's just a game, but Opening Day should be a time to show off your best players or the players that have earned their spot in the lineup. In my opinion, Brandon Fahey has earned his spot. I think Hernandez's outstanding defense from last season is the only reason he's still being considered. I honestly don't think that last seasons performance should be the reason he deserves a spot. Sorry but Fahey has been OUTSTANDING this spring. He's worked his butt off and he can field a routine grounder without taking the heads off of the opposing team or the fans above.

Luis Hernandez "dude."

Luis Hernandez? Are you serious? Honestly, I'm ready to give the job to Fahey until this guy can get his act together.
E is for E6 all year long

Sorry to pick on you, Roch, but you wrote "Adam Jones sacrificed Redman to second - no idea why - and Roberson scored on Oscar Salazar's grounder to short."
Here's an idea for why the sac by Jones - if Redman was still on first for Salazar's grounder to short - would it have been a double-play ball?
In other news - Bedard has given up 23 earned runs in 24 innings. Which makes me, at least, feel a little better about Jones' mediocre spring training. Hopefully they'll both turn a corner when the regular season starts.
'N' is for "n'ah".

What does this guy have to do to lose his job? 6th error? I mean I feel for the guy, but come on.
Fahey should take his spot. It's pretty obvious. What message does that send to other players if a player makes 6 errors and still wins a job?
....and please get rid of Gibbons. The contract money is lost. That shouldn't have any bearing on the decision...unless it is possible to trade him...which aint gonna happen.
The Orioles can't make the decision based on past investments. If they do they are wasting a chance to give valuable playing time to another player.

its kind of amazing that hernadez can continue to play horrible baseball and we are just going to give this guy the starting position. meanwhile fahey whom i dont particular like either, is actually playing pretty good defense and hitting a little bit too. how can tremley explain to everyone that hernadez deserves to be in the majors, much less start? i just dont under this guy, why does he feel like he owes some of these guys something. i just dont get it, maybe someone can please explain his thinking to me? oh and yesterdays comment about gibbons needed to improve in some areas. the guy is 30+ years old, if he can't hit major league pitching or field major league hitting, im pretty sure he never will, just cut your loses and give a younger guy a shot. but that makes to much sense, im just a dumb fan.

Hernandez is outta control.
My prediction is that on Opening Day some fan sitting down enjoying their nice first base side seats is in for a ball to the face via routine ground ball to Hernandez.

Wow. And I thought Tejada's defense was terrible...
Posted by: Chris | March 27, 2008 3:12 PM
Look, if Hernandez can't even throw to first base, why don't we just make Chuck Knoblauch our shortstop? With all the 'roids he consumed, he'd at least offer more power than Hernandez.

Why did the Moose go to NY?

Baron. I agree with you re: the Rogers Centre. They tried to fix it up but it still looks like a facility(can't even use the word ballpark) that is better suited for a car or boat show or tractor pull.
It's also as quiet as a funeral parlor, even with 25,000 fans, as most of them seem to care less about what's going on. The hot dogs are brutal)dog umms?) and over-priced, warm beer just adds to the ambience.
I've been there numerous times as work brings me to Toronto but I guess I keep hoping the experience will improve(kind of like the attitude I'll have to assume for this year's Orioles!)

Does it look like hernandez can get better, or just that he can't get any worse? I think there's a difference...
Now, for those of you who were all about complaining about Tejada's shortcomings in the fielding...

You're making fun of a guy with diabetes who's reported to have been having trouble losing weight?
Posted by: Ricky | March 27, 2008 3:27 PM
300 pounds!
That's what happens when you eat Egg McMuffins for breakfast and Popeyes chicken for brunch, lunch and dinner.
It all comes full circle.

It must be lunch time because those were some cold cuts!

i knew this team should gave gotten the tallest firstbaseman they could find.
MacPhail stinks, get him out of here now before he fails to bring in more guys who can bunt...
Posted by: jim66 | March 27, 2008 3:31 PM
6 errors in 25 games?
sigh...
You do realise that no O has more then 2 HR this spring training right?
I was really hoping out of starting pitching, bullpen, offense and defense the O's would be at least slightly better then average in one of them.
/me shakes head and weeps

Trembly needs to realize that hernandez cant be playing shortstop for this team. They need to go out and acquire one via waiver wire. The glaring hole at shortstop is bigger than dmitri youngs thighs.

Jones and Moore are slumping badly now. Today, Jones went 0-3 w/ 2Ks, and Moore went 0-4 w/ 3Ks, which I think is identical to his line from two days ago. He hasn't had a hit for a while now.
In addition to his error, Luis Hernandez was also 0-3 with a K, lowering his average to .171. Brandon Fahey had a hit, but even he is only batting .255 and hasn't shown much power (though he did have a triple the other day).
This feels the opening scene of Major League when all the local Clevelanders are reading the paper and wondering who all the guys on the team are and realizing they're in for a terrible year.

L. Hernandez is a lifetime minor leaguer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I wonder how many games the O's will play in Aberdeen this year.............
Posted by: Jim from Dundalk | March 27, 2008 3:50 PM
Wow. Before spring training started, I figured Hernandez wouldn't be a bad candidate to be the club's everyday shortstop. Now I'm absolutely horrified by that idea. Is this even the same guy we saw last year? I think he needs to start the year in AAA, and get himself straight before coming back up. He's not proving himself to be ready, and is clearly pressing way too much. Or maybe what we saw last year was a fluke?
Posted by: KW | March 27, 2008 4:02 PM
Good Lord, this team cannot hit.
Posted by: Dylan | March 27, 2008 4:02 PM
Can we trade Hernandez for the rights to Knoblauch? If I'm going to pay to watch defensive comedy, it may as well be from an established pro.
Posted by: Mongo | March 27, 2008 4:12 PM
Trem, Im disappointed. You let Salazar play 2nd base this late in spring training? He played there in winter ball. You don't let Huff play lots of 3rd base ? You don't let Mora play a second in left field ? This team is gonna [ new word ] need some different type of switches this year. Did you ever think of seeing if Lowen could hit ? Left handed pinch hitter in those inter league games. The fans would love it. Be creative Trem. You've got nothing to lose. Be creative T.
Posted by: Chikezie | March 27, 2008 4:36 PM
The Detroit Tigars have a big need for a reliever. They have invested heavily this winter and are now hamstrung by the loss of two relievers. They must think they are watching their chance pass them by. They also have three shortstops among their top ten prospects. If we were to send them Sherill we could probibly get a premo shortstop plus a throw in but that might mean we wouldn't win the world series this year without Sherill.

Youre right, this line-up cant hit. But how many starters did it have in it? Jones, supposedly Hernandez, and who else?? This was a scrub line-up.
Posted by: terps19 | March 27, 2008 4:52 PM
Nice to hear that Adam Stern is in camp. Thanks for answering my question Roch...from three weeks ago.
I was a Dave Trembley fan, but if he's going to say one minute that players have to earn there jobs here, then hand ss to one that hasn't, then there's some greasy palms in the clubhouse.
Posted by: Bill In Elkton | March 27, 2008 7:59 PM
I am trying to give the orioles the benefit of the doubt in almost every case this year, but already i must make a negative comment. In the beginning of spring training dave trembley said that the ss position was wide open and that the players would have to compete for the position. Well have a horrible spring training he his giving the job to luis who by the way i like alot. I know fahey isn't the answer in the long term but what kind of message does this give to the rest of the team about the managers crediability. If the position was truly opened to the best player then fahey should be starting and not luis. Get ready for a long long season .
Posted by: bob lancione | March 28, 2008 7:42 AM
Fahey? You can't be serious. Brandon Fahey has earned nothing at the major or minor league levels. On most teams Fahey would not even be considered for the 25 man roster but here he's the starting SS...it's laughable. Trembley is making the correct move in going with Hernandez as he's out of options and did well enough in 2007 to earn a shot. It's not as if the organization has other solid options anyway.
I expect the O's to be heavy players come the trade deadline but they'd at least like to make it close to that date before falling 25 games out of first.
Posted by: Mick | March 28, 2008 9:11 AM
You know it's amazing how people have selective reading and only see what they want out of somebody else' email.I wrote a email saying how dave trembley said that the ss position was wide open and that the person with the best spring training would win the JOBI also said that i really like Luis H but that he has had a terrible spring. Another point of mine was that fahey isn't the long term answer of the orioles and this jerk MICK Decides to ignore my point completely about dave crediability in the eyes of the rest of the team and comes back and say How in the hell could you want Fahey playing ss for this team. That i guess why this country of ours is so great that idiots that know nothing about that sports are allowed to speak.
Posted by: bob lancione | March 28, 2008 10:13 AM
Yes Bob, you hit the nail on the head with that last "sentence" (I use the term loosely). It really is amazing that people who...
A)Never have anything positive to say about anyone/anything...
B)Apparently have a very poor grasp of the English language...
C)Go off and make incendiary statements, call names, and otherwise act like babies when someone disagrees with them...
...should be allowed to post their garbage in a public forum, that is certainly an American privilege. I hope you're grateful every day that you can clog up these comments sections with your trash, because frankly it stinks.
BTW, I think the O's should move Mora to SS and play Moore every day at 3B...it couldn't be any worse than the current arrangement. Too bad Mora won't agree to it.
