Game update

The Orioles and Cardinals are tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jeremy Guthrie took a five-hit shutout into the fifth - yes, he was scattering those hits - but Aaron Miles singled and Skip Schumaker tripled to left field, with Jay Gibbons missing on his diving attempt. Jay Payton just dropped a fly ball in center to bring home the tying run.

Guthrie loaded the bases with one out in the first, but the Cardinals couldn't score.

Consecutive doubles by Gibbons and Payton gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the fourth, and the Orioles added an unearned run in the fifth on a Melvin Mora single after Miles and left fielder Chris Duncan collided while chasing Scott Moore's fly ball.

Moore finally had a ball hit to him at second base. He fielded Miles grounder and threw him out.  Bravo.

Former general manager Hank Peters will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day, with Rick Dempsey on the receiving end, as a way of honoring the 1983 world championship team.

The concession stands will include a few new menu items. Anyone hungry for corn dog bites? How about garlic and herb fries?

They'll also serve ballpark sliders and steak-umm burgers. And before you ask, I have no idea how a steak-umm qualifies as a burger, but we'll soon find out.

It wasn't Adam Jones that dropped the ball, it was Jay Payton.

Is it Adam Jones or Jay Payton in CF? The official boxscore has Payton making the error...

Not sure why my post at 1:57 PM today on the previous thread was marked "anonymous" but I don't want to hide behind anything. Just want to confirm it was my post.

Jones isn't even in the lineup...

Payton dropped the ball, not Jones, right?

Was it Jones or Payton with the error? I didn't even know Jones was playing. Following along with mlb.com it doesn't have him listed.

Is Jones even playing? I mean, I'm watching the game on MLB.tv and I'm pretty sure that was Payton who dropped that.

Adam Jones doesn't even appear to be in the game based on the box score. Was it actually Payton who dropped the fly ball?

If they're half as good (and half as expensive) as the Garlic Fries out at AT&T Park in San Francisco, count me in!

The mlb.com boxscore shows that Jay Payton made the error - Jones wasn't starting today, right?

Are you sure it wasn't Payton who dropped that ball? Sounds like Guthrie will be fine on opening day with Gibbons nowhere near the field.
With any luck he hurt himself diving and will be forced to miss the 2008 season.

Did any one see that Ol' Sal Fasano was given his out right release? What does it say about you when a 36-37 yr old catcher (looks 50) can't get a job.

Once Great ... Still Proud ... Go O's

Wow, you people are good. And fast. Yes, it was Jay Payton. I made the correction. Thanks.
I stand by my concession menu, however.

Steak-umm Burgers are awesome!

Steak-Umm burgers ? I have to go check those out , 2nd game . Will let you know Roch !

Are there any truth to rumors that Gibbons might have serve Boog's Barbecue Pit to earn his $ 12 million?

Enlighten me, Butch. Is it a steak-umm? Is it a burger? How exactly does that work?

Steak-ummm Burgers? For some reason my stomach is upset thinking about it. Yuk!

Call me when they have cocktail vendors. Life would be so much better if I could sit at the game and drink a vodka martini! Maybe one day?!?!?!?

I just read the post on the prvious thread about the $60 plus million owed to the stiffs (Gibbons, Hernandez, et al). But didnt you forget Baez? He earns at least $6 million per year.

It's all Angelos' money, so with that I dont care. But we need to somehow clear this deadweight payroll if we are going to make a run at Teixiera. Clearing just half that payroll will allow us to be the high bidder and that's all that matter for a Boras client. So get to work McPhail!

looked like the ball totally hit him on the arm...it was a slow a$$ curve and he didn't even attempt to move....weak.

I sure hope they didn't take away Attman's. :-(

Nice to know the two Jays are bringing their veteran presence to the outfield. We could duct tape them together and still not have a half decent player. Could be entertaining though.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that steak-um burgers are basically cheesesteak subs on a hamburger bun rather than a sub roll?!

Jay Gibbons has no business diving..unless there is a swimming pool involved. He also needs to learn (though he should have already) that hitting the cutoff man when you play left field is mandatory, not optional.

Since you seem to know all about the concessions this year - Any word on if veggie dogs will be available? I could get them at RFK. Are they saying we don't deserve what Nat's fans get????

And poor Sal. I thought he was great. And I may have the only Fasano jersey outside of his immediate family. Signed, even.

5 more days. I guess Roberts is disappointed not traded yet ? Glad to see the 2nd coming of Frank Robinson is almost ready to tear it up. Were we fooled ? I like Gibbons. It's VERY nice to be Gibbons. Set for life is nice. Only in America!

Presumably a stack of steak-umms--delicious and good for you too. Falls in line with the rest of the crap Peter is just feeding us on and off the field. Maybe he can sue the food companies one day for causing obesity. Beautiful!

Speaking of beautiful (not!) looks like a bunch of outfield errors and a passed ball help us get blown out today after a good start. So much for pitching and defense.

The new concessions sound awful....yuck. Nothing organic? Maybe we can keep BRob happy if we put organic waffles on the menu???

After all that HGH...Gibbons may very well be an entree at Boog's BBQ pit.

Ok, I'm piling on.

So Payton and Gibby want some playing time huh? And this is how they reward the skipper? Was the wind bad? Regardless, those balls should have been caught. With Markakis and Jones in the outfield this probably wont happen a lot. I hope Scott is solid in left and I think they should rotate someone else in left. At least both Gibby and Payton got a hit though.

Gibbons misplayed a ball, Im shocked

Poor Sad Sal...his time as an O in 2005 was amazing...10 HR and 19 RBI. I miss the guy.

Corn Dog Bites sound awesome!

Roch - Have you heard if Knott has a chance to stick with the Twins?

I thought that, give a decent number of ABs, he could be a decent MLB player. He certainly has the bat. And if Luzinski, Killebrew and Kingman could last 20+ years in the bigs with their horrible D, Knot should be able to put together a 5 year run.

Granted, Knott will never be mentioned as comparable to those 3 but, if they could last 15, 22 and 16 because of their bats and sunny dispositions, Knott should be able to hit his way to a happy retirement.

My feeling, though, is he is not going to get the chance because he has been labeled as an organizational guy and no one abides by labels more than Baseball people.

Roch - If you were going to handicap this, what would you make the odds of:
Roberts traded before opening day?

Roberts traded ON opening day?

Roberts traded before the July trade deadline?

Roberts traded before the September 1 roster deadline?

Roberts not traded and allowed to go FA?

Roberts signed to a multi-year deal?

I am wondering if they want to keep his as long as possible to keep the team from being a total joke. If some of the new faces - Jones, Scott - take off he is as good as gone. If they struggle, they keep him until they find a suitable and cheaper replacement.

It is funny how this has gone from being a sure thing as a payback to Hendry for the gift of Moore and Cherry to being the drawn out and now uncertain thing it has become.

Chris, the veggie dog comment hit home. About five years ago I was at a game with my wife and some friends. My wife is a vegetarian, and we had heard rumors that somewhere in OPaCY you could get a veggie dog. I stood in line at one of the grills, got up to the counter, and discretely asked the cook. He loudly responded: "Veggie dogs? We only serve BEEF here, son." I had that brief moment of considering saying "It's not for me" but I realized my humiliation was already secure and there was no point in making it worse!

We did later find the one vendor that had them was on Eutaw, but by the following year even they stopped carrying them.
