Cabrera's outing

Daniel Cabrera entered the sixth inning with his pitch count at 42 (30 strikes). He hadn't allowed a run, and though the Nationals had two hits, he faced the minimum number of batters.

Cabrera began to tire, and Garrett Guzman belted a two-run homer to right - the ball clearing the bleachers.  Cabrera retired only one batter, but reliever Randor Bierd stranded two runners.

It was an outstanding performance by Cabrera. He's had two excellent ones, and two poor ones.

One of Cabrera's five strikeouts came on a changeup. That's encouraging.

The Orioles lead, 8-2. Luke Scott hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Brian Roberts had a two-run double in the fourth. Ramon Hernandez entered the game batting .200, but he's 3-for-3.

GO DANNY, GO DANNY, GO!

Four quick comments:

1) Cabrera seems to be learning how to throw groundballs. Through his stellar first five innings, Cabrera threw 6 ground ball outs (two of which were double plays and erased the batters to reach against him), struck out 5, threw three fly-ball outs, and walked none. In the sixth, when he became erratic, he walked a batter, gave up a home run and two singles, and his only out came via fly ball. Moral of the story: throw strikes and stay down in zone, Danny, and you'll be unstoppable (as if he hasn't heard
that before).

2) If I were MacPhail, this is what I'd tell the Cubs: "No Pie, No Deal!" The Roberts deal only begins to make sense if we can snatch Felix Pie in addition to the others mentioned. We would have to ship out Payton in order to get him (perfect!).

3) Moore continues to hit the ball after his return. If anybody has flat-out earned a spot on this team from the spring alone, its Scott Moore.

4) Other guys doing well: Fahey had an RBI single to keep his average above .300 and Mora added an RBI single to keep his average above .450. Mora has had a sizzling spring. Jones had two doubles and two RBIs and is batting .379 for the spring.

wow. through the first five innings that averages to less than 3 pitches per batter. That''s pretty unbelievable for Cabrera, who often throws exactly 4 pitches per batter for several consecutive batters. Good for him. I still don't see it as a sign of a major breakthrough, where he will be equally good from here on out, but at least maybe it shows we should give him a few more outings before we throw in the XL towel.

Salazar makes this club.. Dave has too much respect for the 29 year old. Plus he can flat out hit. He played 2nd base in winter ball. If we can unload Patton, Salazar can start looking for apartments in town. Terrero makes me wonder. He's a 4 star fielder, can hit. Is better then Tike. Toss up.

That is encouraging about Cab's changeup. And yet, however obviously, he'll need to do that a GREAT deal more over the next few weeks to develop the confidence necessary to throw it throughout the regular season. It is, simply, a pitch he must be adamant about not giving up on in clutch situations. I'd rather experience the growing pains that come with him developing his confidence with that pitch than him not learning it at all and giving us more of the same old failings.

Gosh I just wish Daniel could put 3 good games together, go out for that 4th pitch well and never look back. I suppose I'll never give up hope...

Solid pitching across the board for the O's today.

Roch, I hope you're getting your drumroll ready for all the big announcements Trembley is finally going to make this week.OD starter, 5th starter, long reliever, closer. I guess we'll have to wait two more weeks to find out who the starting SS is going to be along with the utility.

Looks like Luke Scott is going to be a force in the line up this year. He could be the perfect change of scenery guy.I hated how Tejada killed rallies.

I would have liked to seen Penn,Liz or Olson make the rotation instead of Traschel and Burres. Why waste innings on these bums when we have guys in waiting that need development. Of well, at least we have some depth this year.

Let me address Ramon Hernandez. When he scored in the O's 4-run first or second inning, he crouched down after crossing the plate, as if to stretch out his legs. On Adam Jones' single off the wall, Hernandez only got to third, mainly because he had to wait to see if it would be caught. Later when he singled for the third time, he looked out of breath talking to John Shelby. Do you know of anything that is bothering Ramon?

As for Danny, what can I do but keep being guardedly optimistic?

"It was an outstanding performance by Cabrera. He's had two excellent ones, and two poor ones."

Isn't this EXACTLY what we're used to from Cabrera?

He was lights out today, but next time out he may not even be able to throw a strike and will be gone by the second.

(Not actually predicting that, but it's kinda been the pattern...)

No matter how you slice it, the O's will be lucky to win 70 games this year. If NOW isn't the time for Cabrera to force himself to learn and get comfortable with the changeup, when is?

A 162-game experiment, with modest expectations throughout, could save his career.

Roch,

For goodness sake, watch your titles...for a minute I thought that we had another disgusting revelation about D-Cab's lifestyle!!

Enough! Play ball!

St. Patricks Day - Oh Danny Boy! Now if he could only replicate this start against the Red Sox before the end of Spring Training.

Danny is still a real work in progress. His heart and thoughts are still down home. He's in a strange country. He has lots of money that he sends home. He really needs to turn 30. After 30 [ if he's still here , he'll be a star.] Just my opioion. I really dig how the Trem is show playing and not show playing ] my minor league favoite prospects. Blake [ Sckmucks's boy] Let Tripp wait [ Schmucks other boy ,] Wieters [ just a sip and out.] Giving Terrero a shot.Salazar. Giving Terrero a shot. Letting Blake play a little. Trem might be the best thing to happen here .He's the best . By far. Manager is set.
