And more news
Garrett Olson has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.
The decision was made before today's workout, so it has nothing to do with him nailing Scott Moore on the elbow. Pure coincidence.
Matt Albers and Brian Burres are the top candidates to be the fifth starter if the Orioles don't make a trade. The loser could be a long reliever.
We can't forget about Jon Leicester, who makes Thursday's start.

One good move at least. Olson was still nibbling...

Wow, Olson to Norfolk. I thought he was having a good srping. Now, does that mean that those, like Olson, sent to Norfolk will definitely not be back for opening day or are they being sent there to get more playing time and there is a chance that Olson could still be the 5th starter on opening day?

Roch, the O's are a trip......about the young pitchers being sent down....Penn, Liz and Olson now gone. When will they ever get to develop? Albers better be the guy...he did start a few times for the Astros last year with Patton. Burres and Leicester both are just not that good or just that inconsistent...simple as that...they are OK but wow the O's are hard to figure out. You just have to believe that the Roberts trade is going down soon and Gallagher or Marshall is stepping in the rotation...and Albers, Burres and I guess Leicester and which ever Cub does not make it as the long guys. This enough to drive one crazy....as bad as the Bedard trade wait.

As far as Sherrill's song when he enters games, I'd be happy with the Pointer Sisters' "Automatic".

Olson goes down, eh? Well, I'd like to see the best team the Orioles have to offer. Which is why I'm looking into season tickets at Norfolk.

Okay enough with the Burres and Albers bashing and every other young guy fighting for the fifth spot. You say they are inconsistent.... well let's look at the other men who have a spot in the rotation.
Cabrera -- he's a walking question mark! The fact that we were all shocked by his sunday performance is not a good thing. It should be "oh he had another nice outing" not "Holy crap, how did he do that."
Loewen -- Yea he's recovering from that surgery, but he's still not as established as he was last season. His last outing was not so impressive.
Traschel -- As our "veteran leader" you'd think we could easily say he's our Opening Day starter, but the fact is that he's not THAT impressive either.
The only pitcher who truly deserves a spot on that rotation is without a doubt Guthrie. Based on his performance last season he not only deserves a spot on the rotation but also as our Opening Day starter. He's consistent, and could probably give us a nice win to start the season!

Craig- Albers got more than a "few" starts last year, 18 of them, to go with 13 relief appearances. 110.2 innings leading to a 4-11 record, and 5.86 ERA. I'm with you, though, Kranitz better be seeing something else. Although his 1:5 K:BB spring looks good, he was only 50:71 last season.
Kind of surprised that Olson is down already, having only allowed 1 ER in 7 innings. I'm guessing the 6 BB is the main reason.

Albers as fifth man, definitely; he has better stuff than Burres.
As for Sherrill's entrance theme, White Zombie's music has been described as "white trash on acid metal." If Sherrill sticks with their song, then the O's should put a trailer out in the bullpen for him. LOL

Olson clearly isn't ready yet (and may never be), so that's ok. One thing to consider is that it doesn't matter who we put out there to begin the season, we're going to be bad. I would rather wait until a pitcher is absolutely ready before we "start the clock" on his time. Liz could certainly do with another half season in the minors, which coincidentally adds one year of club control for the Birds. I know this sounds sleazy (it probably is) but I wouldn't be surprised if the team was considering it. It just makes sense from a rebuilding standpoint to make sure all the pitchers are under your control as long as possible.

As far as intro music, I think Sherill's could be Ozzy Osboure's, "I Don't Want To Stop." Although they should leave the second verse out, but the chorus is what would be a closers intro. Very inergetic and new.

Is Redman going to stay utility or is there a chance for him in left field?

Why are the O's hiding perhaps the best unknown thrower they have?
Ryan Keefer

I'm alittle confused... maybe someone can explain it for me... In an earlier post by Martin, it was stated that Albers K:B ratio is 1:5 this spring and that "looks good". Wouldn't this be understood as 1 K for every 5 walks? And if so, why would that be good?

Sherrill's song = AC/DC's "Thunderstuck".
I think that the reason the Cubs/Orioles are holding off on the trade is because each team wants to see who is available next week when roster cuts are made. I don't think that our 5th starter (and possibly our starting SS) are on the roster yet.

I agree with the comment about when to "start the clock." The O's made a huge mistake IMHO by bringing up Markakis to start 2006. By waiting just a bit he'd have only 1.9 yrs now, not 2.0 yrs. Markakis will be a free agent after 2011 season finishes. This could have been delayed by a year by delaying his entrance a week. Bad move by the prior administration.

these decisions are frustrating. i'd like to see some young guys with some up-sides instead of burres and trachsel. it s looking like our rotation may be guthrie, cabrera, loewen, trachsel and burres. that looks like the same as last year, minus bedard. how is that rebuilding?
Posted by: Jesse | March 18, 2008 2:54 PM
As long as Sherrill's song isn't Britany's "Oops I did it again."
Posted by: Neil | March 18, 2008 3:35 PM
We need a lead for our closer to pitch so his song is irrelevant. How about The sound of silence?
Posted by: Anthony | March 18, 2008 4:10 PM
Yup, Gentleman Chris, I messed that all up, trying to fire that post off too quickly during work. Albers had a great 1:5 BB:K before today (and a fine 3:9 after todays start.) But last years' 50:71 is an even worse proportion than Cabreras' 108:166
