The wild side
Adam Loewen couldn't get an out in the second inning and was removed with the bases loaded and the score tied, 1-1.
Loewen only threw 16 strikes among his 39 pitches. Ten of his last 11 pitches were balls. He was missing by a lot.
Loewen didn't allow a hit, but he walked four - including all three batters he faced in the second - and struck out two. He was charged with three runs, the last two scoring on Brett Carroll's single off reliever Craig Anderson, who inherited the bases-loaded jam.
Center fielder Adam Jones almost threw out Jorge Cantu, but catcher Ramon Hernandez didn't block the plate. The ball arrived early, but Hernandez couldn't apply the tag in time.
Marlins starter Sergio Mitre faced only three batters, retiring none, before leaving with a sore elbow.

Sounds like a really beautiful baseball game. I realize it's the first time out, but these guys have been throwing bullpens for a few weeks. Why is it hard to throw strikes in a game?

Where's the game on the internet? No luck with WHFS, WHFS2, 1300 or 105.7.
Help!

You can't listen to baseball games on the internet except if you get the MLB package. The MLB has a monopoly on the internet streams.

Patrick,
Game is blacked out on Internet. Only on the MLB pay site. You either have to shell out the $14.95 for the season pass or be local. Sucks man,

Ryan, have you ever played or studied the game?? Pitching in a live game to real hitters is a whole lot different from pitching in the bullpen (even with a stand-in batter).

Perhaps Ramon's sudden weight loss was a bad thing.... now he can't even block the plate!!!
Give the man some cheeseburgers and nachos!!! Then maybe he'll be able to play his position!

So much for patience with a rebuilding team. It's the first game of preseason and we are in complete rebuilding mode. Relax people.

I think I'm right about this -- there is no free audio streaming of MLB games. You have to subscribe to a service through MLB.com. I'm a subscriber and unfortunately when I've tried to login today it tells me certain parts of the site are being renovated for our convenience.

Patrick - Games are "blacked out" online and only streamed through mlb.com's pay service. You'd think they might give you spring training without a subscription...
Posted by: WILL | February 28, 2008 2:24 PM
Patrick,
You COULD listen to the game on-line if you subscribe to MLB Gameday Audio (only 14.95 a season). That is, you could IF IT WAS WORKING! Each time I try to log in, an alert pops up telling me that the site is down for maintenance...

Typical first Spring Training game. Wild pitchers and some sloppy defensive play. Guess that's why ST is so long. I'm sure Adam will work out the kinks and be sharper next time around. He hasn't pitched in nearly a year, so I don't see any cause for cocnern yet. Nice to hear Jones showing off the cannon. Between him and Markakis, we may see a lot of outfield assists this year.
I'm still on the fence about the Roberts trade. I think the O's would be better off waiting until the trade deadline in July. They also better get someone back who can occupy the leadoff spot, and I don't see that coming from the Cubs.
bloworioles - The status-quo of griping, and making snarky remarks about the team is old and tired. You sound like the rest of the so-called "fans" who have nothing decent or constructive to say. "Oh, they're gonna suck. It's been like this for eleven years and will never change no matter what! ::melodramatic sigh::" I'm actually suprised you didn't throw an Angelos comment in there, too. "It will never change until Angelos sells the team." That's another gem. No, I'm not endorsing Angelos (I still don't like him), but he has yet to veto any recent trades, or screw anything up, so I'm not jumping on his back about the last 11 years, because what's done is done. If you can't get behind what's going on NOW, and the new direction of the team, then go jump on another team's bandwagon. We all know the next few years will be as rough as the last eleven, if not worse. But for crying out loud, get over it or get off the bus.
Sorry to the rest of you bloggers here. I'm just getting tired of sifting through tthose comments.

Gameday Audio is is back on line! Only a hour and a half into the game...is that outstanding service or what? (What?...Exactly!)

I agree..."Frankie says Relax". This is Spring Training for the fans to. We get a month of preparing ourselves for watching rebuilding baseball. Not to mention it is the first few inning of the first exhibition game.
Remember when Steve McNair drove the Ravens down the field on a 94 yd drive in the first possession of the Pre-Season. The next day people said it was the best drive in Ravens history. And my favorite was someone had a "See you in Glendale" sign.
In other words.....PRE-SEASON MEANS NOTHING!!!!

Roflmbo...well I don't about Ramon but 'burgers and 'chos always make me feel better
Posted by: 33rdstreet4ever | February 28, 2008 3:00 PM
Ramon could never block the plate... or at least he could never be bothered to. Before he came to the O's he didn't block the plate in a playoff game for San Diego and when he was asked about it he actually had the audacity to say that he didn't want to get hurt in his free agent year... IN THE PLAYOFFS!
But anyway it's great to see how his new attitude is working out for Dave Trembley. WHY is MacPhail so focused on dumping Brian Roberts - who hustles and doesn't complain - for a bunch of mediocre Cubs prospects when there are so many guys on this team that really need to go?
Get rid of Hernandez, Payton, Huff, Gibbons and possibly Mora and Millar! As long as you have that much dead weight on your team your rebuilding isn't going to work no matter how many second rate prospects you bring in! Those guys will just poison the rookies and by the time they have enough experience to be good they'll all be spoiled prima donnas who won't put their bodies on the line for the team!

Roch can you pass along a message to The Sun's Talk Forum admins and tell them that they are punks?
Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | February 28, 2008 3:08 PM
Jennifer- 'Give the man some cheeseburgers and nachos' ? good one ! LOL .
p.s. maybe Bynum can be Ramon's pinch-runner?
Posted by: Allan | February 28, 2008 3:17 PM
Then stop sifting. It's that simple. This is an organization that has become the laughingstock of the MLB. How many positive comments do you think this team is going to receive? I will say this, MacPhail is one heck of an executive. That's about it sadly.

Baltimore Fan-
I play college baseball at Carnegie Mellon, so yes, I have studied and played baseball. I am well aware that pitching to a hitter is different than pitching in a bullpen. That said, throwing strikes is more or less the same in either case. You're trying to spot your pitches more carefully in a game, but you should still be around the plate. It sounds like Loewen was way off, which is rather disconcerting since he's been throwing for a few weeks. My team is stuck inside until the snow melts and we have to ask our pitchers to transition from throwing off an indoor plastic mound to pitching several innings in a competitive game. I don't think I buy the excuse that the bullpen and game situations are all that different.

Hey KW... thank you!
Posted by: Baron | February 28, 2008 4:29 PM
"Spring training" means you dont block the plate b/c you dont risk getting hurt for no reason- I was listening to the game in the car and Manfra was pointing out a play here and there as ones that would be mad in a regular game, but it's not worth diving for grounders, etc...

Sounds crazy but my sources in the warehouse say that Terrero was signed to show , or teach Jones how to play center field. Terrero can play the outfield. Also Pete A is trying to pull some major strings to get Marrion Jones out of prison to work with Jones to help make him run faster.

Thanks KW. Enough already from these backward-looking types. Move forward! Macphail is and he is doing a good job along the way.
Trade Roberts for the best package you can get from the Cubbies and keep going.
