Opening lineup
Brian Roberts - 2B
Melvin Mora - 3B
Nick Markakis - RF
Kevin Millar - 1B
Luke Scott - LF
Ramon Hernandez - C
Jay Gibbons - DH
Adam Jones - CF
Luis Hernandez - SS
Adam Loewen - P
Substitute Aubrey Huff for Gibbons and you probably have your Opening Day lineup - though the second baseman could change, too.
Jones and Scott are the only regulars who won't make the trip to Jupiter tomorrow.

Roch, should Mora and/or Millar "go" for whatever reason mid season before whatever deadline, is there any indication in camp who would step into either one of their roles?
Posted by: James | February 28, 2008 8:37 AM
oh i almost forgot... hey roch, would you mind providing us with a Marlins Manatees update when possible?
(like a fat guy on a blintz!)

Roch,
What time is the game today and will it be on the radio? I think I heard something about it this morning on 105.7. Although I could barely stay awake this morning, so I might have been day dreaming while sitting in traffic!!!
PS Is anyone else on the verge of suicide here? This weather will be the death of me. Sunday's warm weather was such a tease!

James: Scott Moore would seem a logical successor at third - or perhaps first, since he's also playing that position. But this organzation never has a shortage of first basemen.
Jennifer: You heard correctly. Today's game is on radio.
Posted by: Roch Kubatko | February 28, 2008 9:03 AM
Yeah, just a shortage of GOOD first basemen.
Here's hoping Scott Moore hits his way onto the team this spring.
Posted by: Steve | February 28, 2008 9:06 AM
I agree Roch...that is more then likely the opening day line-up sans Gibbons.
I would like to see R.Hernandez rake the ball this spring and take the clean-up spot so Millar can drop to sixth or seventh where I feel he is better suited to hit.
Seems to be a slow day here at work today so I will be looking forward to the updates.

It will be so nice to not see Gibbons name one day.

Too bad that we still have the likes of Gibbons, Payton, Millar and Huff to muck up the rebuild process.

Asked about Spiezio's release, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said, "I think it's a consistent message about what the team represents."
How's that, Mr. La Russa?
The Cardinals seem to have a pervasive problem with Performance Detracting Drugs. Looks like Spiezio wasn't performing at a high enough level for his transgressions to be forgiven. He picked the wrong offseason to break the law.
Roch or anyone-- will 105.7 stream the game?
Posted by: JPA | February 28, 2008 9:52 AM
Roch:
Let's say that Roberts is traded for Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno, Eric Patterson, plus whatever. Who becomes the leadoff hitter in this lineup?
Posted by: StoneGroove | February 28, 2008 9:54 AM
JPA,
MLB regulations prohibit streaming. You have to subscribe to their package.
Posted by: Jeff | February 28, 2008 10:01 AM
So let's see, Spiezio is arrested for driving under the influence and is let go, and the Manager, LaRussa, who was also arrested for driving under the influence and was arrested, but was not let go, says, "I think it's a consistent message about what the team represents." Seems the Cardinals have different standards depending on whether you are a member of the rank-and-file, or a member of management.

I think you can listen to the game on 105.7's website. There's a listen live tab under the whfs2.com link. Too bad it's not on masn.

As far as opening day roster, do you think we will see Payton in left instead of Scott because of the lefthanded matchup vs Kazmir (assuming Kazmir gets healthy)???
Posted by: mh198300 | February 28, 2008 10:21 AM
Game will be on at 1pm on 105.7!
Posted by: Dean | February 28, 2008 10:25 AM
I rarely make it to Jupiter. Though last week I did zip over to Mars to get some hot dog buns.
Posted by: bryanintimonium | February 28, 2008 10:26 AM
Roch: Did you post the projected opening day roster to make us ill? Can we get to 2010 already? Please pass the Pepto Bismol.
Posted by: Brett | February 28, 2008 10:28 AM
I'm happy that this one's going to be on radio. Looks like I'm taking my break at 1:05 today and listening to the sweet sounds of Joe Angel & Fred Manfra. How i miss baseball season.

Do the Phillies also have an option for Anna Benson?
Posted by: Michael | February 27, 2008 7:35 PM
Dalila's (spelling I am unsure of) signed Anna, it's just down the street from the ballpark.... they were a package deal.
An MRI won't necessarily show the damage to the labrum for Patton. My labrum tear was not visible on an MRI. The surgeon found that damage once in the shoulder repairing the other damage. Just an example of how iffy it all really is, but he sure sounds like he has something bad going on in there. I can see the signs from the comments made by him.
That really isn't all that bad of a lineup with Huff in place of Gibbons. It won't win the AL East, but it could be decent if all those guys play to their potential. Now subtract Roberts & you have a huge hole at leadoff & one less proven hitter, then we are guaranteed last place. IF the pitching can hold up, maybe 4th again.... but hey, we are rebuilding right?

First time poster, long time reader. Roch you doing a great job updating us during ST. Keep it up

Do you think we may see Payton in for Scott on opening day if Kazmir is healthy and starts???
Posted by: mh198300 | February 28, 2008 11:07 AM
With Roberts likely to be traded before Opening Day (according to Chicago papers), who inherits the lead-off spot?
Posted by: patrick | February 28, 2008 11:25 AM
Im attending the game in Jupiter tommorow. Why isnt Adam Jones making the trip? Kind of a bummer... I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a spark of hope for this seasons turn out. Luiz Hernandez, is got high expectations filling the Leadership role of shortstop. Lets go Ooooo's. What happen to the fire of baseball in Bmore?
Posted by: Sal E Boy | February 28, 2008 11:43 AM
I don't think MLB will let 105.7 stream the game. Might check MLB.com to see if they're doing it - but have your checkbook ready.
Posted by: john | February 28, 2008 11:44 AM
LaRussa, to say the least, is a hypocrite. He fell asleep at a stoplight , about 4 AM, with his foot on the brake & the truck in D. At least Spiezio got out of his vehicle & walked to someone's house.
JPA is right, if that had been one of his star players, they would have "stood behind him as innocent until the justice system had run it's course... or gotten him some help..."
Posted by: Brian | February 28, 2008 11:58 AM
WOW ! just like that you are switching from Guthrie to Lowen for opening day prediction? Was Lowen's side sessions that good and Guthrie's sides that bad? please let us know what you have seen?
Posted by: roxie | February 28, 2008 12:27 PM
JPA, Deke, Brian - yep. LaRussa impresses me less all the time. I'm a lot happier with Trembley - he seems to have good character, and be bright and dedicated without needing everyone to bow to his ego. Does anyone else remember LaRussa's Wendy's commercial flap? He did an ad for them years ago where he was in the dugout - I think he gets a call, says "marinara - yes!" or something. Then he flipped out because he's a vegetarian and the ad was for a chicken sandwich. You might think a genius would have checked what Wendy's was having him promote.
Posted by: sheets | February 28, 2008 12:28 PM
Yeah, I think Huff, Payton, and Gibbons stick out like sore thumbs, but I don't say the same about Millar...
Millar is aiming to be the veteran "cheerleader" of this team, much like Ray Lewis. He's demonstrated that ability time and time again. His presence here gives us something fun to watch and at the same time, he's still a pretty decent player. Meanwhile, Huff and Payton are too expensive for what they give us, and I'm not even sure what Gibbons gives us

LOL, hilarious sheets, I didn't know about that Wendy's flap & LaHypocrite. Where on Earth had he been if he didn't know what a Wendy's sold?
Speaking of Wendy's....Ever heard the old Wendy's catch phrase?
Where's the beef?
The answer was, between Wendy's buns...
