Could Silva be golden?
Checking the Arizona Fall League, fifth-round pick Jacob Arrieta has strung together 10 consecutive scoreless innings. Bob McCrory leads the league with four saves. Nolan Reimold is batting .232 with three homers and seven RBIs.
The Twins picked up Joe Nathan's $6 million option for 2008, so if you were picturing him in an Orioles uniform next season, don't torture yourself.
I'd take him over Mariano Rivera right now, but the Orioles won't get either guy. And as we've discussed previously, spending a lot of money on a closer isn't necessarily the way to go.
The Twins will try to re-sign Carlos Silva, who could be this winter's Gil Meche in a very thin pitching market. He went 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA in 202 innings this season, and is 55-46 with a 4.19 ERA lifetime. By today's standards, that might be a No. 2 starter.
I'm just saying...

Steer clear of an expensive contract for Silva... he would be a huge mistake. With so many young arms in AAA and below, no need to go 4 years for a guy like Carlos.

Roch - He might be a #2 somewhere but hopefully not here. Been there done that.
I also, sadly, think you are right about Tejada. It might be at the point where moving him is in the best interests both Tejada and the O's.
I just think his bat will rebound. At worst case, this will drive his trade value up if they keep him. A best case is he is happy again playing 3B and hitting 26 HR with 100+ RBI to match Markakis. But I can't help feeling you can color him gone.
Menawhile, have you heard any whispers about Francisco Cordero of the Brewers? A couple sites mention him as a likely O's signing for closer.
He looks like a better setup option to me, but it is not like we have options up the wazoo.
I am betting Rivera and ARod follow Torre to LA.

Why would Arod follow Torre to LA? So Torre can bat him 8th in the playoffs again? In 2006 Torre did a rather bad job of protecting and supporting Arod. I would be shocked if Arod went to LA, for the record I don't think Riveria is going anywhere either, players like to talk up stuff like that but they go where the money is.

Silva will end up staying with the Twins.....which is great for a Twins fan like myself. He would definitely be a number 2 starter on the O's rotation, but he's usually been the number 3 or 4 starter with the Twins--certainly nothing spectacular, but he will consistently eat up 180-200 innings every year, which is just about all you can ask of a back end of the rotation starter. I am a little surprised to see people on here saying they'd pass on SIlva for the O's, this team would be lucky to have an innings-eater to take some pressure off the so called bullpen.

...as far as calling Silva "golden", if by "golden" you mean "makes me wanna puke in my mouth and swallow it back down", then "yes, Roch"...I'd have to agree...

Whatever happened to Flanagan? It has been almost a month since you even mentioned him. Is he still with the team?

We really don't need Carlos Silva. The Gil Meche comparison is quixotic at best. Meche has had an ace's arm since he was drafted; not so for Silva.
Carlos Silva is to pitching what Jay Payton, Aubrey Huff, Jay Gibbons, Paul Bako, Kevin Millar, Corey Patterson, Chris Singleton and Marty Cordova are to hitting/fielding. Yes, they belong in the big leagues. But that's about all you can say for them.

i'll go out on a limb and say that Silva won't be the difference next yr between a successful and unsuccessful season.
