The lineup

No Aubrey Huff again tonight because of stiffness in his neck and lower back. He could miss tomorrow's game, as well, and finish with a .280 average, 34 doubles, five triples (that's not a misprint), 15 homers and 72 RBIs in 151 games.

Here's the lineup:

Brian Roberts - 2B

Melvin Mora - 3B

Nick Markakis - RF

Miguel Tejada - DH

Kevin Millar - 1B

Ramon Hernandez - C

Jay Payton - LF

Tike Redman - CF

Luis Hernandez - SS

Daniel Cabrera - P

Manager Dave Trembley was asked about using Cabrera as the closer next season. Can we please retire that question?

"You have to have command," Trembley said.

That would be a "no."

You also need an even temperament. Does Cabrera have one?

"You can probably ask Dustin Pedroia that question," Trembley replied with a chuckle.

wayward O should like all the aubrey haters to please line up and apologize. he was one of the good guys this year.

"No Aubrey Huff again tonight because of stiffness in his neck and lower back"

Hmm I wonder why? A night of drinking will do that to you. The guy is at the bar like every single night. But I'm not hating on him. I love Huff! I'm glad he's sitting out though, because Millar is back in. THANK GOD!

Hopefully tonight's game is as exciting as yesterdays. I'll be watching from home, but will certainly raise a beer to Mora when he steps up to the plate. Again, props to you. Also, does anyone know if the Orioles got a bag of money in the mail from the Red Sox... maybe a thank you card, or flowers (or a closer?) No?

I'm forever an O's fan, but I would like to see the Red Sox go all the way. I hate the Yankees. I was downtown most of the day today and there were too many yankees fans. Some car full of yankee boys tooted their horn at me so I flipped them off and said they were queer. Why? they asked... umm because you like the Yankees. Then I sped off. Ahh that felt good.

heres to another win tonight. Let's end this season with a BANG!

Huff hurt us early on, very much so, but I tip my cap to him for his second half. He's a professional hitter and I'd like to see what he can do for us next year.

Mark me down as one of those opposed to bring Schilling here. Let's forget about aging over the hill pitchers and focus on youth. Besides this whole mentoring thing is pointless; do you think guys like Bedard and Cabrera are going to listen to anyone, let alone a pompous egomaniac like Schilling? They don't even pay attention to their own pitching coach so who's he going to 'mentor'-Guthrie is the only one that might listen and he seems to be doing fine on his own.
I share the concerns of others re: McPhail's fascination with Rowand and Hunter. These guys(or Jones) are not the answer. Rowand is another Marty Cordova but with more bucks and Hunter is likely looking elsewhere. If Adam Dunn isn't offered 13 mill option, then there's our solution.

Can you fathom if Dan could learn to throw [ adjust ] like Eckersley. 3/4rs to side arm. The batters would have to start wearing full body armor. But no. One great start then 2 so, so. The future - Tripp & Nick on the corners. Or Nick in center and Smiley and Tripp on the corners. Huff at 3rd. He's as good as the Nat's guy. Torey in center. Ist base ??? Bonds DH. Quit laughing. I had the terps since Wednesday. See Heather [ my future wife ] Take care of your little girl, R

Jennifer, whatever your smoking, can I have some? Redsox Nation have become more boorish, annoying, and cocky than Yankee fans. And all they did was win 1 WS title in 86 years. Atleast when the Yankees stink their fans are still cocky and arrogant. There's something to be respected in that. I will forever root for the Yankees over the Redsox. And it wasn't always like that. It used to be the opposite but after all of Redsox Nation's hypocritical whining about the Yankees payroll (even though the Sox have by far the 2nd highest payroll in MLB) and everything else they made me switch sides and now root for the Yankees over the Sox. And I'd venture to guess that I'm not the only one who shares those sentiments.

Ah yes, 6-1 O's and here comes the D-Cab inplosion.
Jeeze, WTF is with this guy???

You must admit that we are a far better team then the Yankees. If this was a play off series they would chew and spit. Let Torre rest the boys.If this was TB , We'd lose, right. Lets be real. Let's all pray weekly that Wieaters can hit. NOT!

This pitching staff is just plain embarrassing!...we have a collection of slow pitch pitchers - they are all soft throwers. How did it get this way Roch? These guys can't be in the mix next year can they? Why would we bother to follow this team. Being in Buffalo, NY I am just glad I can't waste my money on this organization.

hopefully this is danny hammering in the last nail into his Oriole coffin...for a guy who's been pitching in the majors for a few years now, he is worse than he's ever been. When Trembly talks about him being in the bullpen next year, well you gotta know it's the end of the road for him here. let him go be someone else's potential, someone else's headcase. The only problem being you'll be lucky to get a back in trade even the piece of rubber he pitches from.

Some car full of yankee boys tooted their horn at me so I flipped them off and said they were queer. -Jennifer

It might be funny if Jen wasn't just so sad. Jen, maybe you could start rooting for the Nats or something.

The top priority for the off-season needs to be getting rid of Daniel Cabrera.

It is absolutely paramount.

There is not a team in this league that disposes of a lead quicker than the Orioles. Another 9 spot. Man. Just a despicable performance. And Trembley talks about respecting the game? Please, this team is an affront to major league baseball...maybe even minor league baseball. Like I said, McPhail best be armed with pink slips and suitcases. And he can start with the guys he's replaced-both of them, and in no particular order.

Nice way to end the season Cabrera!! He can't hold a 6-1 lead against the Yanks 2nd string. He better get used to pitching against AAA players because that's where he should be next year.
The reporter who asked the dumb question about him closing should give his head a shake! I'm presuming it wasn't you of course, Roch, unless you asked it in jest or just to get a reaction from Trembley.
We must have set some kind of record for big innings allowed. I can think of at least 4 times when we've given up 8 + in the last month.
Maybe the Yanks should have started ARod, he might have hit 60 HRS before the season ends!
v is for Victor-hopefully for the last time

We don't have to worry - plenty of teams will offer money to the likes of Rowand and Hunter, and we won't get them even if MacPhail tries (hey, side note - does Flanagan even have a job anymore?). We should be worried more about middle relievers - sign them and lose draft picks just the same as losing picks for signing quality position players. There's so much turnover in middle relief, too, that any veteran who has had a job for a few years is very likely to be a "type A" free agent and cost a high draft pick. Mazzone crafted good bullpens off minor league talent and retreads year after year in Atlanta... I'm disillusioned that he hasn't pulled it off here.

I've seen enough, Cabrera needs to go.

Look at the bright side, Weiters makes his debut in official 3 hours and change

Orioles Fun Fact: Jay Payton now has more HR (7) than does Jay Gibbons (6). For all those thinking: "Well, yeah, but Gibby would have more if he had stayed healthy." My response: Don't be so sure.

Quick question for the offseason: How many pitchers named Cabrera should the Orioles carry on their roster next spring: 1, 2 or 0?

It's all in good fun you weirdos who take everything so seriously on this blog. Chill your jets. And to Chief Clancy.... I have sat in a sea of Boston Fans and Yankee Fans at Camden Yards... and I must say the Boston fans are by far more respectable and well mannered than Yankee fans. I will always be an O's fan, but I enjoy sitting next to Boston Fans because we can be competitive and have fun. Yankee fans just act like a-holes (pardon my language). They act like their poo doesn't stink... well guess what it does.

To Kyle....
In regards to the car tooting.. I'm sorry but women do not find it sexy when dirty guys toot their horns at you and yell sexual comments out the window. Sorry but you do that to me... you are going to get flipped off. It might be cool in NY but not in Baltimore.
So why am I sad... I'm guessing you toot your horn at women on the street... why else would you be so mad?

just a random question: Did anyone else see Batman, Robin, Spiderman, and Superman at the game? HAHA WTF?

this entire organization oughta be hanging its collective head in shame. it's really not funny how bad they are.
this is just so terribly sad.
how does this team improve 24 games in one year? how do they improve even 12, just to get to .500 given the state of the entire organization? I'm thinking that this team will never have enough talented players-cause thats what you need- to compete in the AL East.. I'm anxious to see how McPhail deals with this screwed up mess called the Orioles...

This team kills me. I thought for sure we wuld pull it out. How big for this team would it be to allow a megarun inning and still win? If only that moonshot by Markakis had gone fair, then we wouldnt have had to watch that embarassing ground out by Tejada.

R is for Run, Miggy, Run!!!

TerryP: Rowand is another Marty Cordova??? Have you ever watched Rowand play? I doubt it....and if you seriously think Adam Dunn would help the Orioles.....I's like 20 pounds of whatever that stuff is you're smoking!

Beware any National leaguer who puts up big numbers - they come back to earth in the AL...see Eric Byrnes, Edgar Renteria, Rowand, Eckstein (who couldn't make it in Anaheim), JD Drew, Brandon Phillips..not sure if it's the pitching or parks - but there's some kind of connection.

Dave Taylor,

Would Dunn help the O's? Let's see, four consecutive years of 46,40,40,40 HRs and an .OPS of .930...

Yeah you're right, we couldn't use anybody like that.

He would be the best offensive player we've had in Baltimore since Cal and Murray at their peak. Yes, better than Tejada at his best.

And no, I really don't care how he makes his outs, as long as he keeps doing what he does when he's not striking out.

Dave. Of course I've watched Rowand play, especially when he was with the White Sox and he wasn't anything special. He's having a career year with the Phils-so what? Everbody knows the NL is weaker. He's hitting free-agency at the right time and some team will be dumb enough to cough up 15 mill/yr and regret it 1-2 years later.
Re: Dunn..the man hit 40 HR 4 years in a row, has a high OBA-how can he not be considered an offensive asset? Sure, he K's a lot but so do a lot of guys-Howard/Soriano,etc...
Dunn's probably going to re-sign with the Reds and Rowand isn't likely to want to come to the O's unless we offer 20 mill/yr...

If MacPhail is able to sign Bedard to a contract entension, then I would be ok with the Oriole's going hard after Aaron Rowand and trading Tejada for Jon Garland. Bring up Nolan Reimold to play LF and Luis Jimenez to play 1B or DH and I think the team is substantially improved.

If Bedard will not sign an extension, he should be traded for young prospects, along with Tejada and maybe Roberts (if you get a good enough offer). And don't bother signing Rowand or any other free agents for that matter.

Also, as an aside, why don't most of you think Luis Jimenez is a legitimate prospect? He put up great numbers at Bowie. I think he would probably be an upgrade offensively over Millar at 1B.

I have the distinct misfortune of being an Orioles fan who lives in Connecticut, where everyone who is not a Yankees fan is a Red Sox fan. And I entirely concur with Chief Clancy Wiggum; I now prefer the Yankees simply because of their fanbase. In my experience, Red Sox fans, in light of their 2004 World Series victory, have become completely insufferable. Note, I am not saying I enjoy the Yankees or their fans. I just enjoy the Red Sox and their fans even less. In a perfect world, they'd play each other and both lose.

I really have nothing to add to Chief Clancy's post, other than that his suspicions that he's not alone are not unfounded.

Also, using words like "queer", even to describe Yankee fans, is small-minded, bigoted, and tantamount to the worst racial slurs you can think of. Grow up.

If we [ O's ] lose on Sunday [ I hope ] and Pitt wins, we could possibly get the # 2 pick next winter. The worst we could pick 6th. That's if we win on Sunday and the Yankees will probably let us win.TB gets #1. Root for Pittsburg to win, us to lose and let the flip of the coin do the rest.

Wow, some people. First of all to Hooves....

You really don't have an argument in regards to me using the word "queer." For one, I was directing that word towards the individuals in the car, not the Yankee Fans as a whole.

Two... know the definition of the word "queer" before making a nasty and hateful comment towards me. For your reference I've listed the definition below:

1. strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different
2. of a questionable nature or character; suspicious; shady:
3. not feeling physically right or well; giddy, faint, or qualmish
4. mentally unbalanced or deranged.

Wow, I wonder who the small minded person is now. Go back to school and take a few vocabulary lessons then get back to me. Words have different meanings, it's just in what context you use them.

Big sigh.

I suspect this response will be a complete waste of my time, but Jennifer, if there are three things I cannot stand in this world, they are ignorance, stupidity, and obnoxiousness, and you've managed to hit the trifecta in a single post. Congratulations.

Where to begin?

How about with your invocation of "context" in defense of using the word "queer"? That seems like a good place. The "context" in which you used this word was one in which you intended it as an insult. A car full of Yankee fans drove up next to you, behaving in a manner that was offensive to you on some level, and you responded with an insult. There is the context. That's fine; I have no problem with that. I encourage it.

Where I think you were small-minded, though, is in the choice of word you used for the insult. We have examined the context already, so I'd rather look at the subtext of what "queer" means. (I've had a vocabulary lesson or two in my day, so I'd just like to point out the relationship between your word "context" and my word "subtext".) When you used the word "queer" in reference to the Yankee fans, I'm sure the subtext was not "strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint". I'm sure you did not really mean to call them a bunch of "giddy" or "qualmish" fellows. Honk your horn at me, will you? Why, you people of a questionable nature!

No. That's not what you meant to say, is it? What you meant to say was, "F*** off, faggots", or more mildly, "Get lost, homos." That's the subtext of a word like "queer". It is pure invective, especially in the "context" you used it, and as such, a form of violence. It sows the seed of violence. It's a word that is meant to wound on a much deeper level than can be attained by any of the definitions you graciously provided.

Maybe I'm being harsh. I don't know you, after all, and maybe you deserve the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it wasn't your intention at all to come across that way, and maybe you actually weren't aware of the connotation that "queer" has in our society. (I can't imagine how that would have escaped you, but maybe it did, and you were using it in complete innocence.) But there is the very crux of ignorance, and it would only serve to reinforce my initial assertion that using a word like "queer" is small-minded. Maybe next time you'll be larger-minded and think of something more appropriate to say. "A**holes", maybe. I've often found that word equal to the task of delineating obnoxious Yankee fans.

That's all I have to say on the matter. I hate that I've spent as much time arguing this point as I have, but I find that kind of language every bit as disgusting as any other slur in the book.

Enjoy the off-season. And let's all of us please pray that the 2008 line-up you proposed under the "As another season ends..." post entry never, ever takes the field. Tike Redman as our everyday leftfielder? Yikes. Leicester as the fifth starter? 2-3 with a 7.59 ERA is not outstanding. Well, it is, but not in a good way. And Daniel Cabrera doesn't belong anywhere in this organization, let alone the bullpen.

Alright, I'm done.
